Le Sauvage is a boutique style hotel occupying a converted convent. The decor is understated but elegant. Breakfast was self service buffet style. Very nicely set out with the usual continental offerings but the produce was of a high quality. Staff could not be more friendly and obliging. The hotel is well located below the citadel in the old quarter. There was a lovely view from the bedroom over Besancon and the hotel garden. There were nice toiletries in the bathroom which had a large walk in shower. The restaurant as with the rest of the hotel is very tastefully decorated. We had an excellent dinner there on the terrace again overlooking the garden and wooded hills sloping up from the valley of the Doubs. A perfect setting for dinner. Parking was available in the grounds under the shade of the trees. Book a spot in advance.

Highly recommended- everything was wonderful. The location is quiet and scenic being at the foot of the mountain where the huge citadel (built for Louis 14th) is located. The hotel overlooks a lovely valley, forested hills rising from the river Doubs, which forms an oxbow around the city. We walked up to the citadel on steps nearby the entrance to the hotel. The hotel is in a historic building that has been turned into a hotel with great success. My room was spacious, comfortable, and had four windows facing towards the hillside. The bathroom in was wonderful (huge bathtub with lots of hot water), as was the spa with the jacuzzi and steam room. Breakfast provided everything one could wish to eat and drink - eggs, bacon, pastries, bread, cheese, fresh orange juice! We ate at the restaurant two nights and wished we had eaten there every night we were in Besanson - wonderful creative cuisine! Note that the restaurant was full every night so be sure to reserve in advance. The restaurant looks out to a garden at the back of the hotel. You can eat breakfast on a patio looking out over the garden. Service in restaurant, lobby, and room were of highest caliber. This was our first visit to Besancon and we were amazed by all there is to see - the architecture and diverse museums of the citadel (e.g., a zoo with baboons and tigers, fish and insect museums, fascinating exhibits about a famous local marionette theatre, and soon-to-open museum of WWII resistance and deportation), a splendid Beaux Arts museum with Courbet's Death of the Stag, and a clock museum, which I thought would be boring but was genuinely interesting.

Nothing to criticize - all is praised

Very beautiful setting - quite difficult to drive to but a great location in Besancon. Would definitely recommend. The restaurant was closed for evening meals when we were there so can’t comment on that but the breakfast on the Sun terrace was lovely.

We missed the spa time and you could only use the spa in 2 hourly bookings. Understandable I’m sure but I expect that means that very few people actually use it because how many people really have time to spend 2 hours in a spa. If they have invested in developing a spa, they should enable people to use it more easily

The hotel fits perfectly into the surrounding and climate of the historical partner Besancon. It is important there are quite some parking places in the garden. Nice view on Besancon, unfortunately not on Citadele mounting the city. Room Ok.

No air conditioning (probably due to historical landscape), thus in hot days it is difficult to breath. No shower, only bath. Coming on Sunday exclude use of the restaurant - it is closed except breakfast :(

Location is near to the citadelle of Vauban and the area is nice and quiet. Room was clean and still has some features referring to the hotel's past as a converted church. Private parking was great as it was definitely necessary in that part of Besancon. The view from our room even looked out at the citadelle. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Only a minor comment - the quality of breakfast ingredients was very good but the range a bit limited. Some scrambled eggs would be nice :)

Very cute, unique room. Lovely restoration overall. Beautiful view. Very helpful, accommodating staff. Good air conditioning. Pet-friendly. Refrigerator. Excellent parking on site (in the garden).

Very uncomfortable bed and pillows. No luxury to the bed or bathroom. No drawers or shelves for clothes (you have to live out of your suitcase). No iron or coffee maker. The room had an extra single bed that would be better utilized if it was a sofa bed (so you could have a place to sit and relax). Unfortunately the restaurant was closed due to vacation (at peak tourist time??) which meant a walk down the hill into town each night. (Yes, be aware this hotel is on a hill). Garden has huge potential but is quite unkept.

Idyllic jewel of a hotel in quiet location within a couple of minutes walk to the town. Staff are very helpful and charming. Restaurant full of character, balcony has lovely view of the garden and nice for an apero or breakfast. Breakfast was good with a nice choice of pastries, cold meats, cheese etc with the option to boil eggs. Dinner beautifuly presented and wine choice good. Parking on site. Lovely bedroom and bathroom.

Really cute rooms. Our room for a family of 4 opened up to a little courtyard. Easy parking. Really lovely staff! Quiet location but easy to access the 'downtown' area. If we're ever in Besancon again, we'll definitely stay here again! Also, we enjoyed breakfast here in the morning. Couldn't have been easier. Lovely spread of eggs, bacon, ham, pastries, cheese and breads with fresh juice and tea/coffee. We also had dinner at the restaurant but thought it was a little expensive.

The hotel is tucked away in the old city with a nice quiet garden where you can have coffee or something else served. The restaurant was overbooked but the staff suggested 4-5 places in walking distance and made a reservation on the one we chose. Breakfast was very nice not too many choices but everything is good quality. We did not need anything else. The interior has been nicely decorated using few colors (a little too dark color tone perhaps). It makes you feel calm immediately once you arrive.

While the room was fine for the two of us it would have been small for a family room as it is advertised. The guests in the room above us were a little noisy in the evening. There is a nice secured parking lot behind hotel but if you are not walking well be aware that there are either steps to climb or a longer walking distance to get to the front entrance to get inside the hotel.

This was an overnight stop, intended to break up a two day drive. I expected a minimal level of convenience and comfort. They exceeded all expectations, and made me wish I could stay longer. The room was beautiful and comfortable, and the staff provided top level service. This is on my list for a return visit. They are doing everything right!
