I learnt about Ischia and its castle and monastery through a movie and was keen to stay on the island during our trip to Italy. I found Albergo Il Monastero, and honestly, it looked too good to be true. From the moment we booked, to the moment we departed Ischia, our stay at Albergo II Monastero was fantastic, maybe even one of my most memorable stays for me. The rooms are quite minimalist, but that's very much in keeping with the style and history of the location. You wouldn't want anything else here. Rooms are comfortable, clean and offer stunning views of Ischia and the castle. The staff were brilliant and most welcoming. We had the best hotel breakfast I've ever had with the most perfect and romantic view outside on the terrace. We visited the castle too, which I really recommend, given how interesting the history of Ischia and the castle is. The garden, for hotel guests only, had a quiet and relaxed vibe. The bistro offered a lovely view of Ischia and was a great place for a refreshing drink as the sun was setting. In the summer evening, returning to our hotel, empty of the castle's many day tourists, the mood was magical, mysterious and charming. Thanks so much to Albergo Il Monastero for a fantastic stay. Highly recommended!

The WiFi was a little patchy - but, in many ways, I was so glad to get off my phone and enjoy this magical setting.

Hotel located in a beautiful monastery castle. The main highlight is the hotel itself inside the monastery and part of the castle, which is Ischia's main attraction. Museums, patios, beautiful gardens, a mix of garden with vegetable garden, flowers and vegetables. The room is simple but comfortable, with a good bathroom and shower. The best breakfast: sweets, cakes, pie; black rice salad with leaves from the garden, variety of homemade breads, fresh mozzarella, juices, fruits, nuts, eggs, cold cuts, gluten-free, etc. The hotel restaurant is excellent, food worthy of the best quality restaurant. There are guests who complain about stairs and the room not being large. The hotel is inside a historic building, a monastery and it is impossible not to have stairs. There is already an elevator that takes you from the entrance to the highest part where the hotel is located. But some stairs are unavoidable. The thick walls limit WiFi, which works well in the room, and near the reception and restaurant. Ultimately, a special accommodation and an experience.

Expensive arranged tours in Ischia Better arrange with drivers outside

We loved everything. The views were phenomenal, and the proximity to the Castello for a day of exploring was perfection. The breakfast buffet alone would make me want to stay there again (so many fresh vegetables, fruits, breads, cakes, juices...you name it). Plus so many spaces to explore within the hotel itself, like the gardens, terraces, bistro, etc. So serene and romantic. But overall the staff was SO helpful and kind, we will never forget it. We truly would not have made it there without their help (there was a massive train outage and they helped us facilitate ferry times and a very late checkin). 15/10 experience here. I only wish we had been able to stay longer!

Nothing! It was all amazing! If you have a hard time with stairs, I would maybe say this is not the place for you, however we did stay on the top floor, so maybe just request a lower floor.

We loved everything about our stay at this incredibly beautiful hotel. Ther service, room, the views, our morning breakfast, everything was exceptional. Our stay was comfortable, the rooms were clean and beautifully laid out. We loved our free tour of the castle with picturesque views and lots of art and history. Would love to mention each and every member of the staff, who took care of us so well and constantly sent us hot water and honey on request, with a smile, as I had a sore throat. Joseph was very courteous, friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Such amazing people working at the hotel, the morning breakfast was also peaceful and oh so good! The staff again was patient and explained us all about the salads, desserts, breads and more at breakfast. And that sea view room view was just extraordinarily beautiful! We didn't want to leave. Thank you :)

Nothing.

We absolutely loved our stay - we stayed four nights as part of our honeymoon on the island. We lucked out with an extra night being available. When we arrived to the port we hopped in a taxi, our luggage was dealt with and we took the lift up to the accomodation. The staff are just incredible… the best service we have ever received. The rooms are simple and in keeping with the history. You shouldn’t be staying here for the room itself. The family have done an incredible job of restoring the grounds… walk around d the garden and take the complimentary ticket and tour the castle at your leisure. I urge you to grab a spritz and watch the boats go by, seagulls fly past and foot traffic pass across the bridge from the bistro. The breakfast is incredible, healthy and nutritious. I would highly recommend this stay. Lastly, to have a gallery on site is just magical… you can pick up a treasure of gift.

Nothing.

Great location on it’s own little islet. Clean comfortable room with view over the sea and the town. Buffett breakfast included chef baked bread, wild rice salad, cheese, ham, fresh fruit and selection of freshly baked cakes. As a resident, you have free access to the lift from the bottom of the hill to inside the monastery, then a short walk to the hotel entrance. You also have free access to the gardens and monastery buildings, culminating in a stop at the cafe at the top of the hill.

Access could be an issue if you have mobility issues as there is no lift within the hotel itself and a number of steps from the monastery lift to the hotel reception. However, the staff were very accommodating and collected our bag from the entrance on arrival and took it to our room. They also offered to take it down to the entrance when we checked out, arrange taxis or to drop bags at the taxi tank at the end of the walkway.

Had a great view of the city (unfortunately not looking east toward Naples & Vesuvius but it's possible the monastery doesn't actually face them?) Loved the charm of this place. The shower was very small but had good water pressure. Staff was exceptional.

Everything was great, but if I had to pick one thing I didn't like, it would be the quantity of stairs. If I weren't in the shape I'm in, I would never have been able to climb them all. Fortunately, they take care of your bags from the very bottom all the way to your room, and then back again when you leave. Also there is an elevator that cuts off a lot of stairs, but there are still stairs after the elevator, then stairs inside the hotel to your floor.

Just WOW! If I could give 11/10 I would ! 3 night stay was reduced to 2 nights due to storms and my partner and I really didn’t want to leave. This is an utterly unique place to stay and everything has been perfectly curated- incredible food grown in the garden and a delicious breakfast with a view to art and sculptures around every corner. There is grace and style in its simplicity in the bedroom but very comfortable with lovely bath products. Yes there are steps, but the kind and courteous staff will help. If you do want to have dinner in the restaurant, make sure you book ahead. A magical experience at night walking across the causeway with our own key to get into the castle at night. We will be back!

Faultless stay

This is truly the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The monastery had a tremendous air of mystery, dignity, and high art, yet all of the staff were so kind and helpful, almost like family, and I felt so welcome and at home. Every breakfast was a special occasion, and I will never forget our dinner at the restaurant - I hoped to experience Italian food at its best during my trip, which I realize is ridiculously ambitious, but I really feel like that was accomplished here. The location is so impressive it's hard to believe you can actually stay here! I went in October and I do recommend that time of year - it was relatively quiet (tail-end of the season) and the weather was perfect. Also it was no problem to speak 100% English.
