Hosts were phenomenal, friendly, neat, and made themselves available to answer any questions and to simply make sure everyone felt at home. The whole place was kept tidy at all times and provided excellent space to meet people. The place was also surprisingly soundproof and offered a nice window into experiencing the city through the design of the hostel.
The location get quite humid, especially over night, something to help de-humidify may have been helpful in ensuring comfort. Other than that, it's hard to find any areas of change.

Mulan Hostel has been exceptional. I have traveled for twenty five years and seen so many hostels I can’t count. This has been the best I have stayed at. I was there for four weeks total, a few days with my 70 year old mother, three weeks on my own in the women’s shared dorm room and the last bit in a private room as my husband joined me. It was so comfortable, clean and welcoming and the hosts were so lovely and went out of their way on a number of occasions to help me: definitely above and beyond the call of duty! The location was just off the chaos of Arashiyama in a quiet nice neighborhood and very accessible with a variety of transportation options. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. I will be staying there again should I happen to visit Kyoto in the future.

I have already reviewed this hostel for my time in the women’s shared dorm room but would like to review it again for the time I spent with my husband in a private room. We were very comfortable and the hosts were so helpful and responsive. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay for my month in Kyoto and when my husband joined me, it was so easy to switch to a private room and we were so happy with the space. I loved my walk over the bridge in the morning on my way to the woodworking class I was taking, the quiet neighborhood in which the hostel is located, and how at home I felt in Mulan Hostel. My husband and I felt very welcomed and were so impressed by how clean and organized everything was. We really appreciated that it was just away from the busyness of Arashiyama yet very accessible.

Really friendly host, communication worked perfectly. He gave me some tips about the attractions and you can get a map of the town and sights. Nice common room with place to work or read and a kitchen. I was also able to lend an adapter for my charger since mine didn't work and umbrellas were there, too. It's located great, in nice walking distance to attractions like the monkey park and the bamboo forest. The whole area is just so beautiful, but also very touristy. Bus stop right in front of the building, it takes a little to get to the main train station though. It's possible to leave your baggage there after already having checked out. On my last day I came back soaking wet from the rain to get my stuff and had to leave again almost right away. Luckily I could blowdry my clothes a bit real quick, which certainly saved me from getting sick afterwards.

Super clean, welcoming and organized. The amenities within the cabin and the hostal itself are fantastic - really high value despite the price. Bikes, games, free tea and coffee. The bathrooms are clean and enough for the amount of people per floor. Would have loved staying here longer. And would stay here again without any doubts. The location is very convenient, less than 5 minutes walking to the train station on one side, and 5 mins walking on the other direction to a 24h Lawson. It’s super nice to wake up on this side of Kyoto, to be so close to the Ashiyama for an early arrival before the masses. And staying here in general near the river, riding the bike or going for a walk is priceless.

A fantastic hostel in a quiet (but central) area of Arashiyama, very close to the Hankyu train station and the Togetsukyo Bridge. The hostel was beautifully designed, light, airy and spotlessly clean. The member of staff who greeted me was extremely friendly and helpful. She always had a smile on her face and did everything she could to help me. She is an asset to the hostel. The room was very clean. There was storage space and a small lockable cupboard to store valuables. The bunk bed was large and had space around it for belongings. The showers and washing areas were bright and clean. The kitchen was large and well equipped. Mulan is a very comfortable, relaxing and peaceful place to stay.
All good

Location is not far and not too close to the bamboo forest. Room is very clean. share bathroom is also clean. There is a train station near by and the bus stop is just 1 min walk from away. Very convenient for coming from Kyoto station. I would suggest to take train which is much faster then taking bus, however the train is not JR train. It is a great option to stay here for early morning photo shoot at bamboo forest. near by the hotel, there is a small restaurant, they offer a simple breakfast for 1000Y.
the room rate which I paid was quite expensive and i was very disappointment to find out the room I was given was without attached bathroom.

This is the best hostel experience that I had in Japan (I switched several hostels because of my long stay), then I realized the people who run the hostel are nice because they are Chinese people, not Japanese. I always had nice experiences with Chinese people everywhere I go. Unlike Japanese hosts who are super mean and cold to me, the staff at Mulan were very kind, accommodating and caring towards me. I can’t stress this enough because the day I stayed in Mulan was the only time that I could feel a human connection from people with a heart rather than cold hearted robotic Japanese people.

The hostel is located in a beautiful residential neighborhood which is at the same time not far from the major tourist spots in Arashiyama. By bus also all other parts of the city are conveniently reachable although it takes some more time to get there. But I personally would choose this location over any other in the city center especially to come home to after a busy day. The property itself and all facilities were all really well taken care of and felt like home as soon as I entered. The hosts were super kind and welcoming too and helped me with all my questions.
If I would have to point out one thing I’d like to mention that the beds were a bit noisy when moving around. Keep this in mind if you have a light sleep but with earplugs this was no problem at all.

These first nights in Kyoto my 70 year old mother and I stayed in the women’s shared dorm room. The hosts made sure my mother had a lower bunk, and when we arrived, late and in the rain, they helped us to get a taxi last minute. We were both so impressed by their helpfulness and welcome and found the hostel very comfortable and clean. I continued to stay for an entire month after my mother left and was so happy with Mulan Hostel the entire time.
