This was the perfect introduction to Japanese culture for us. The staff were exceptionally helpful. They taught us how to dress in the traditional Japanese clothes, helped us with information on the Nakasendo walk, and provided beautiful meals. We were picked up from Nakatsugawa Station and taken to the accommodation, and the following morning they also drove us to Magome to start our Nakasendo walk. They even transported our bag to Nagiso for us. The service from the staff was exceptional. The chef Masaya Yoshida made us beautiful meals for dinner and breakfast. The rooms are traditional Japanese houses with a lot of space, separate rooms for sleeping and dining and private bathrooms in the houses as well as the public onsen. The houses are in beautiful gardens and the rooms have lovely views of the grounds. It is very peaceful and quiet, outside of the main township. This was a fantastic place to stay, and a great Japanese cultural experience.

Our family spent Christmas Eve here and absolutely loved the quiet and fresh mountain air. Staying in a traditional 400 year old property was a wonderful experience. The food was exquisite, prepared by the owner/chef. If you want extremely traditional and high quality food, this is where to go. Most of the food is grown on site. We were collected from the train station when we were arrived and driven to nearby Magome-Juku.
Bearing in mind that this is traditional accomodation and futons are used, they were a little hard. The pillows, again very traditional, are small and filled with hard beads. We did use our blankets folded over as pillows. This by no means is a reflection of this acxomodation at all, if you are someone who suffers neck issues, maybe bring your own pillow

This is as good as a Ryokan can get. You are treated like a valued family member and the cottages are historical and charming. The cuisine artfully prepared by very creative Masaya Yashida (a member of the family owning the place for over 400 years) served with love in the room is unique and features a lot of vegetables and other local ingredients. Nothing is too much for them and they offer you all kind of transfers, not only to the train station, but also to departure points of the Nakasendo walk. Value for money is fantastic and I wonder how they do. Best place ever I have been in Japan and in general I do not write reviews.

Amazing private Japanese cottage on the side of a hill with sweeping views of the valley below. Incredibly comfortable throughout with delicious multiple tasting course Japanese dinner and breakfast. Their onsen was very refreshing after a day of hiking the Nakasendo trail in 35 degree heat, especially with the enormous glass windows opening into the wood. The host and staff were very attentive, considerate of our poor Japanese and spoke good English. They even taught how to properly wear a yukata and gave us suggestions of places to go on our future travels! Easily the best place we stayed in Japan.

Well beyond expectations on almost every level: kindness, hospitality, food... First of all, the host is really responsive both via the Booking message system and Whatsapp, which is a plus: even before getting to Japan we already chatted to arrange a pick up from the station to the hotel. So, if you are worried about the distance from the city center, forget your worries. Second: the host's kindness and hospitality were even beyond the (already high) japanese standards and he also spent some time with us suggesting things to do and places to visit. Also, every other person working there was super-kind and sweet, we really felt welcomed. Third: the food. The owner is a really skilled cook, offering an outstanding kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast, with both regional and national delicious dishes. One of the things that drove our choice to Nagataki were some previous reviews about the food, and we can confirm it was even beyond our expectations, with special attention to both the taste and the composition. Last, the Nagataki charm. Here each host has its own traditional Japanese house, which is just an amazing way to experience a slice of traditional Japanese life. Also, the hotel has got a small onsen that - being few people in the structure for the night we spent there - was split in two private onsen. So, to sum up, we cannot recommend Nagataki enough: if you are undecided, give it a try and you won't regret it.

We had a wonderful stay at Nagataki. The staff is so gracious, extending such warm hospitality from our pickup at the train station, luggage transport to our house, yakata dressing assistance, dinner and breakfast service, and dropoff in Magome. One staff member even gave my daughter an excellent in-room massage after dinner, capping off a relaxing evening. Our 100-year-old house was charming, with not only a kotatsu and xxx inside but also beautiful views of the mountains outside.
My only suggestion would be to replace the kerosene heater with an electric one so avoid the odor.

The food was super-excellent. Perfect authentic Japanese food. The service was perfect, thanks to the hard-working owner and staff. This ryokan has been in business since Edo-Period. The current owner is the 14th generation. The former Japanese emperor stayed here when he was a prince; clearly the one of the best ryokan in the region. We stayed in a 400-year old detatched house, which was such an exciting experience; very unique and exceptional. Highly recommended.
Nothing in particular.

What an incredible experience. Staying at NAGATAKI is like stepping into a living museum. Our thatched roof cottage was almost 400 years old but had AC and WiFi. The rooms are comfortable and it’s identical to staying here in the 1700s except for the modern conveniences. The owner Masaya was an excellent host and made sure everything was perfect. His cooking skills were excellent and both the dinner and breakfast were delicious. They have single gender onsen which I had to myself and which looks out over the beautiful forest. If you’re hiking Nakasendo they have a shuttle to take you to Magome to start your hike. This is a place to come and immerse yourself in Edo Period Japan.
Western people might not be used to the pillows but that’s minor.

We had an exceptional time at Nagataki and will be earnestly recommending it to all our friends and family who travel to Japan. This beautiful inn is tucked away on the hillsides of Nakatsugawa and offered the authentic old-world charm that we were seeking when visiting the Kiso Valley and Nakasendo Trail. The house that we stayed in was 400 years old and was beautiful. All the staff treated us like family during our stay. They were incredibly kind, attentive, and provided us with the best meals we had during our 16 days in Japan. The staff were so thoughtful as to place hot water bottles in our beds at night to help stave off the late autumn chill, which was very cozy. I actually was inspired to purchase a hot water bottle from Muji after that experience because it was so lovely. The onsen facilities were also fabulous. We stayed for one night and were dropped off by the hotel shuttle the next morning to start our walk from Magome to Tsumago. What a magical experience. Thank you to Masaya-san and the rest of the staff!
Nothing. I wish we had stayed longer! I recommend staying at least two nights

very authentic experience the house is huge (private cabin) good public onsen a lot of free parking free umbrellas for the rain nice mountain and trees view great Japanese dinner made by the chef masaya, we ate the day before on high-end restaurant in kyoto (gion nanba), but the dinner on Nakataki was a lot better
We slept on 2 mattresses on the floor, and I didn't sleep well. The door jambs are 1.75m high, so I got hit a lot on the head
