I travel a lot and though the hotel is "traditional", with shared bathrooms and such, the staff/owners offers better service than most 5-star hotels I've been in. Right around the corner from Mt. Haguro and bus line to Gassan, even though it wasn't running when we were there (and the hotel arranged a private taxi!). Breakfasts and dinners were way above expectations and reasonably priced too. Thank you for hosting us!
If you're staying for more than one night the mattresses might be a bit thin. However, we both slept very well without any stiffness or back pain so it may be for the better.

Despite us not speaking the same language, we communicated thru google translate, and the host went above and beyond in making sure I had a comfortable stay. He booked a taxi for me the next morning to Mt Gassan, and even let me leave my bags at the property all day while I was hiking. His wife was so kind and they made me delicious local meals. The room itself was large and comfortable. Everything was very clean. And the little moments of hospitality, such as putting my shoes out for me in the morning and having my bags by the door for me to pick up when I returned in the evening, were very touching. I’d definitely recommend.

The property is very well-maintained and beautiful. The bath is very simple, but perfectly clean and stocked with essentials. The room was very spacious and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was always excellent and the one night I requested dinner, it exceeded my expectations and even contained some local specialties. The proprietors are also very attentive and kind. Within walking distance is access to Haguro Mountain, which I highly recommend.
Since I visited in an off-season time, the facility was mostly empty. There were a few times when I was a bit scared because of the quiet and vastness almost entirely by myself, but for some this may be a good thing! Lots of privacy.

Hagurokan is the authentic Japanese Roykan experience that captures the feeling and essence of of the Mount Haguro area. The couple that run the Ryokan were perfect hosts. The room was spacious, comfortable, and lovely. The Ryokan was very clean. We really felt the care that went into maintaining and running Hagurokan. The location was great. It is a short walk to the entrance of Mount Haguro. There is something really special about this place and the couple who runs it that is difficult to put into words.
Nothing. It was perfect.

The owner, Yoshi-o San was incredibly helpful. Although he doesn’t speak a lot of English (please note, this Rokyan isn’t for your regular tourist, but for someone who wants to get deep into japanese culture), he was keen to understand my broken japanese and even drove me to the ski slope when I wanted to go. The room was stunning with a REALLY comfy bed.
The bath is quite small, and isn’t a proper onsen. This is more about the area but the ski resort is small and only really good for half a day or so.

Wonderful Shokubo near mount Haguro. Easy access by bus to Mount Gassan. Truly mystical experience. The host couple are very warm and welcoming. The home made meals are amazing, I felt spoilt every morning and night by their cooking. The bathing facilities are basic, but everything you need. The gender separated baths are small, but are very nice and give a great nostalgic feel. Highly recommend

Although we arrived too late due to our train connection, the owners welcomed us warmly and even prepared a late dinner. The food was really delicious and the overall experience extremely nice! We felt very welcome. There is a small bath tub and the locations is really good to visit Mt Haguro. We definitely recommend a stay at Hagurokan if you visit the region! The hosts speak English and are very open minded towards foreigners.
We loved everything about it!

Very traditional ryokan, the couple that takes care of it is so sweet and the optional dinner is delicious. Very close to the Haguro's pilgrimage starting point.
I came during winter, and the isolation is the same as in any traditional japanese building: not that great. But there is a heating unit in the room, so its ok.

The room was exceedingly comfortable & luxurious. The location is convenient for visiting Mt Haguro. The onsen was great as well as the locally sourced meals for purchase.
Hosts are hospitable but less prepared for foreign guests so the stay will go well if you already have a good understanding of onsen & ryokan.

"Nice and warm room. Good showers. Try to book dinner and breakfast before you come. The town closes around 5 PM and opens up again around 11 AM, so it's a long time without food. I could order dinner for the next day (3300 yen for one person—pricy), but there was no breakfast option."
