The Kaohsiung Grand Hotel was just like how I saw in the pictures and the room we got was beautiful too. The hotel seemed mostly empty as we hardly ever bumped into other people in the lobby or halls. We could see a nice sunset and night lights from our city-view room, with nobody else out on their balconies (maybe because everybody stayed on the lake view side?)
We were only in Kaohsiung for two nights and wanted to see the city as much as we could in the short time. The hotel is located in an inconvenient area for those without a car, so we opted to use cabs back and forth from the hotel to where ever we wanted to go, which added up to be more than we thought...We'll rent a car next time!

First and foremost I'd suggest to take a room with pool view, cose actual view is over the huge spectacular park and lake. That view is well worth of money. Room was large and... in former times well equipped. At that time place was quite empty so we enjoyed very quite, peaceful atmosphere. Yes, whole place reminds about remnants of former luxury... BTW - inhouse restaurant provides decent food for quite a reasonable money. My best regards to chef.
Place screams and cries for refurbishment. Lovely wall paintings faded/peeled long ago. Traces of use and abuse can be seen everywhere. Water stains, etc. If one can survive without his glasses - I'd suggest left them in pocket. Breakfast - I wouldn't suggest to pay for it.

As a British tourist this place was perfect just to soak up some heritage hotel vibes. It does actually look as grand as it does in the pictures and it really was a bit of a "oh wow" moment pulling up to it in the taxi. Its a little old and tatty inside but not in a bad way, in an original vintage furniture way. The room and balcony were massive - and yes it all looks very very south East Asian (it kind of reminded me of the hotel in the Shining with its big red pillars everywhere!) There is a gorgeous little boutique looking brasserie on the first floor and the food in there was really good. You do have to buy a ticket to use the walkway into the park (I think it was 80 NTD - not very much) and the park is lovely - I walked all the way to the pagoda and climbed to the top and back, which took a good three hours - but the views from the top of there were the best, you can see the entire city - would only do this early morning though - it would be to hot for the rest of the day. I spent an hour or so just walking round the property taking pictures, I booked it for how it looked and it exceeded what I was expecting.
You can only really get here by car / taxi and there are no pavements on the roads outside - I did walk to a temple about half an hour away (there were some really nice huge abandoned statues just down the road on the way) but decided to get an uber back as it was dark by then and would have been to dangerous to walk back on the road. I would only stay one night here and then move to a downtown hotel but if you a tourist and here for a few days defiantly spend one night here.

The hotel has an interesting history and design. I agree with other reviews that for the history, nostalgia and design it is really impressive. The room is dated, but I think that might be part of it's charm. The room was huge with high ceilings. The balcony was large and overlooked the Lion Lake, the park and Nine Corners Bridge. We had an enjoyable walk through the park. The breakfast was good with many options.
It is located away from the rapid train station and a lot of the tourist destinations. We don't take taxis very often, but we probably should have taken one here. The pool maintenance notice on their page indicated the pool would be back open for the dates of our visit, but it was not. I went to the front desk to book a shuttle to go back to the station the day before as they recommended, they ignored me for quite awhile then told me it was all booked up.

Very complete and varied breakfast. Lot of hot, chinees, options but also more European style food. Liked the assigned table policy. Big rooms, authentic classis style. Very comfortable beds. Nice swimming pool and good restaurant. Very friendly staff and excellent door men to order you taxi.
The fitness equipement wasn't up to the quality standard as expected. Location in a park is fantastic, however, you need a taxi for going down town.

We were here for three midweek nights in the middle of summer. We swam in the pool, walked in the woods around the lake, sat on the balcony reading, dined in the hotel restaurants and, all in all, had a lovely time. The food was excellent, the room was spotless, the staff were kind and attentive, and the pool perfect is for swimming laps. We'll certainly be back.

1. Ambience , architecture and facilities are good Nice balcony in every room . Beautiful pool and lake nearby . Traditional Chinese architecture adds up the beauty with lights in evening.
Keep bible in my room is unacceptable without knowing my religion Charging water bottles in room is quite weird

Free HSR pickup with a friendly driver, Mr young. Great view of the swimming pool and the lake from the enormous balcony. I enjoyed early morning swims in the well-maintained pool...what a pleasure! Afternoon Tea was served on our balcony to enable us to enjoy the fantastic view in comfort. The manager, Lillian was very friendly and helpful with all my requests: even helping to organise a lift to the local store and by giving us a guided tour of the hotel (including the 'hidden room'). All our pre-requests were met...a cot in the room, ice and glasses sent to the room. Mr Young (the driver) was everywhere and seemed to do everything! His friendly and helpful demeanour is a great asset to the hotel's image! Oh, I also enjoyed playing table tennis and a game of pool both located next to the swimming pool. Make sure to take a leisurely walk around the neighbouring lake - very serene! If you visit the town, take the ferry to Cijin and enjoy a cocktail at the Sunset Bar. I don't normally spend this much money on a hotel room but if you wish to have a relaxing hotel-based mini-break, then the Grand Hotel is the place for you and worth the extra. Oh yes, forgot to say...not only are the rooms big, but the corridors are also extremely wide and roomy - not like hotels of today where land prices don't allow such extravagance. Whenever visiting Kaohsiung...make sure to stay here (pool and lake view room 4th floor)
Nothing! We had a slight hiccup on arrival but the Manager, Lillian and Mr Young all rallied around to fix the situation and more than made up for the slight inconvenience with their manner and service.

The staff is very friendly and the room is super spacious and the beds are comfortable. Great place to escape from the city and emerge into the wild. Wonderful location. excellent shuttle bus service and reasonable price. Lake tickets are included. It's worth for revisit!
It would be more wonderful that the bath tub is bigger, the way to the swimming pool is more direct and the opening hour of the swimming pool on weekdays remains the same as at weekends.

The way it looked. Very oriental. We loved the little pool for kids.
Wish there was an easier way to get to the pool. And why do guests have to pay 100$ to get into the walk around the lake? The sliding glass door are a bit loud.
