Lovely room and gardens. So much more pleasing than a standard hotel. Rocking chairs overlooking the pond with a walking bridge and fountain outside of our cottage door were wonderful.
The gardens are beautiful but definitely need care. There are empty planters and planters of weeds once walking away from the main house. Overgrown boxwoods with uneven trimming across the tops take away from the original garden layout of magnificent design. Dead wood/ branches needs cutting out of shrub s and the steep gravel drive entrance is severely rutted and needing grading. The tractor with the bucket we saw on the property could have solved that issue but was not employed to do so. Drag the bucket backwards! The swag curtains need vacuuming.

The staff were lovely and the setting was beautiful. The room was unusual and relaxing. L'Occitaine toiletries were a bonus. Breakfast was a calm, relaxing affair in the garden room, hosted by a lovely lady. Cold items were served buffet style whilst hot food was brought to the table, plated.
If you want to eat in the restaurant, book in advance. We should have realised this as we were staying on New Year's Eve. There is no room service but uber eats will deliver. A tour of the house is included with payment for incidentals but we missed out because it was New Year's Day.

It was very quiet, relaxing. Everything was a short walk, which was convenient. The AC was ice cold :) and the water was HOT! Loved the complimentary breakfast
I wouldn’t say “didn’t like,” but the property just needs a little TLC. Some trimming of bushes, trees, and maybe some spray to kill the growing over of the weeds. Our curtains were also full of dust, but the bed drapes were fine. Huge light outside that shined towards our window so we had light coming through the cracks all night.

The Monmouth is located in a very well-kept park. The 1818 restaurant and especially the breakfast room are extremely well-kept. The staff is very friendly. If you enjoy historic antebellum villas, this is the right place for you.
You can tell that some of the buildings were restored more than 40 years ago. Carpets have been laid over what are presumably original wooden floors, which is almost always a shame (both in the rooms and on the veranda [!] of the reception building). These carpets are stained and have been worn out for many years. Some of the window and veranda slats are falling apart. The bathroom, on the other hand, was very nice with wooden floors and a shower with stone tiles (we were in the General Jackson room). Maintaining such a large historic property is a big task that requires a lot of expertise, love and finances - if you do it really well, it's more of a hobby than a way to make money.

The location is lovely with very nice gardens and historic touches. Staff went the extra mile when we left an item in the room--they contacted us and sent it back to us. There's a free tour, which really takes you nowhere you can't see on your own, but the commentary/insights were worth it.
There's need for upkeep and more staff. It seems that the hotel is running at a minimal level, which is too bad for how nice the setting is.

We wanted a romantic getaway and that's exactly what we got! It wasn't crowded or loud. It was very peaceful, historic and private. The staff were very knowledgeable and so friendly! I can't recommend this place enough!!!
If you get the room with the spa tub thinking that it will be big enough for 2 people, its not. However that's really not that big of a deal! Everything else was so perfect! I would just say skip the spa tub if that's what you are thinking 🤣

Grounds were beautiful. Would love to visit while more is blooming, especially the wisteria & azaleas. Breakfast was delicious & staff very friendly. We tried the on-site restaurant. Small menu but dinner was very good. Wonderful ambience.
Room was slightly disappointing. It was very comfortable but didn't have the old Southern grandeur we expected(large 4 poster, high ceiling etc.) But we didn't stay in the main house so those rooms may have those features.

The property was so beautiful and has a rich history. The rooms were clean and big and had beautiful antiques. The atmosphere was so peaceful and made you feel like a southern belle. The staff were absolutely the most wonderful and welcoming and so sweet. We cannot wait to go back. I can’t even begin to express how much we enjoyed this experience here.

Michael who checked us in on Saturday was so so nice. He moved us from the back of the property to the front which was perfect since a wedding reception was taking place that night. It was quiet and we could relax after a long day of traveling. The breakfast the next morning was wonderful and we loved the tour of the gorgeous main home. We will definitely be going back in the future!

I was very pleased with the grounds and quality of service that we had during our brief visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner with an excellent server named George, and especially enjoyed our Mint Julep cocktails prepared with fresh mint that is grown on the estate!
Not a big deal but it would be nice to have a coffee maker in the room. I am an early riser and enjoy drinking coffee before breakfast.
