Comfortable place to stay, quiet and cool from being set into the hillside. But still with some natural light and a pleasant outdoor patio as the room opens directly to the outside. Great to have basic kitchen facilities - including a sink and microwave, cutlery and plates, etc. Excellent location, close to the centre of town. We would stay here again.

Loved the cave feel, and our little kitchenette in Room 7. I kept being reminded of a Moroccan riad, it was so pretty and colorful.

Well the internet wasn't working, and I was waiting to stay at this hotel to get some work done (after driving around in a motorhome). The other thing was that as we were a little late, the office was closed and the key was left for us, but there were no information booklets or pamphlets left out for us. And without the internet, we were at a loss as to find out what where best to go for sunset, and other ideas. Next morning, we were offered all these wonderful brochures, which would have saved a lot of stress the night before, had they been left in our room, as a late arrival.

The staff were fantastic and really accommodating - as we were arriving late and with a young baby too. We were delighted to be moved into a larger suite, with plenty of room for our son to play during the stay as well. It is a really unique way to stay in the Australian outback, whilst still enjoying a little luxury on your trip. The hotel is in a great location to explore Coober Pedy and the surrounding area - with heaps of parking space as well. We'd highly recommend this - as the BEST place to stay when in Coober Pedy.

Nothing could have been better - we loved our stay!

This motel was just mindblowing! I could have googled in advance to see how an underground accommodation actually looks like but wanted to get surprised - and it worked! I was fascinated by the design, the big and comfortable bed, the shower, just about everything. Despite the walls I didn't even think about being literally inside a mound. The owners, even though we met just briefly, were super friendly and you can tell they enjoy living and working in Coober Pedy, despite the flies ;-)

The hosts are very nice and knowledgeable about the area, and make you feel welcome. It is a small motel, with around 10 rooms, a shared kitchen, and outside space. Everything you may need for a night (or more). Loved our night underground, which is a once in a lifetime experience. It is a bit further away from the center, which makes it a safer and quieter space.

The only thing, as it's underground, the corridor that deserves most of the rooms can get quite noisy if people are not mindful. We had noise from 5.30am as people were leaving early.

The hotel was carved into the mountain with exposed stone walls that added to its charm. Plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy your morning coffee. A 5 minute walk to the top of the hill gives you a panoramic view of Coober Pedy. Our room was well equipped with what we needed. Owners were extremely helpful and informative of what Coober Pedy had to offer. Enjoyed chatting with them. A lovely couple. Thank you Erin and Mick for making our stay at Coober Pedy unforgetable

The location was not ideal for us seeing that we did not have a car and were travelling by Greyhound. But if you dont mind walking the town center is only a 10 minute walk.

Iconic former opal mine underground accommodation in Coober Pedy. I would best describe it as a very unique, small, boutique hotel; the kind of place that I most like to stay in anywhere in the world. There are just seven rooms. During my first stay, I was accommodated in a spacious bed sit room, with a sofa, table and chairs and kitchenette, that is one of my all time favourite accommodation experiences, of this seasoned traveller. I liked this stay so much that I made a repeat stay, on my return journey and though my room was much smaller, it still oozed the unique, charming, underground atmosphere, that is what Coober Pedy is famous for. There was also a spotless well equipped communal kitchen, an inviting lobby area, with ample seating for guests to get to know each other and even magazines to read. Indeed the efforts that had been made on communal indoor and outdoor guest facilities, access to views over Coober Pedy and thriving succulent plantings to add a little greenery, in such a harsh environment, otherwise devoid of comfort and gardens, were exceptional. The decor is a delight and there is even a carport for each room, to ensure shade for cars, in one of the hottest places in Australia. The Underground Motel, rates amongst the best experiences of a boutique hotel I have enjoyed anywhere in the world and certainly as my top, within Australia. It was exceptional value for money. The couple running it, themselves avid travellers, provided excellent and obliging service and ensured all their guests had a pleasant and special stay.

Leaving! There are also some steps to get into the rooms, that those with mobility issues should be aware of, but it is a former opal mine and the building and varying levels of access, reflects its history. This was not a negative for me, personally.

Finally got to tick off a bucket-list item by staying at a Cobber Pedy underground motel - very pleased with our choice. First impression of its stunning entrance was wow! an opulent reflection of the colourful vibe associated with this iconic mining town. Super impressive panoramic view from the front porch. Our room was truly spacious and the ensuite totally adequate for our needs. Did not miss windows at all! No fridge was not a problem as we had our own battery-powered car-fridge. There's also a well appointed and very clean separate kitchen for guests' use which was handy for breakfasts and gave us an opportunity to chat with fellow travellers. Always amazed by the interesting people you meet on the road. Be forewarned that mobile reception and/or wi-fi may require a step outside at times. We had under-cover car-parking during our stay. Whilst a bit of a distance from the town centre, nothing is very far in Coober Pedy. Do not miss driving out to The Breakaways; or visiting the Serbian Orthodox Church; or having a meal (ribs to die for) at the Big Winch 360.

We found the lovely lady host most welcoming and friendly but not so much the hubby - may have caught him on a bad day I guess.

That it had 2 rooms so we didn’t have to stay in the same room with our kids. It also had air con, which was great as it was quite hot, even though it was built underground. It had a small kitchenette which is great, as eating out wasn’t an option when we were there.

No doors on the bedrooms. So privacy was thin. That said they are comfortable but small rooms and I’m not sure you could hang a door.

The room and bathroom were all exceptionally clean. Other guests were quiet and respectful. The kitchen was also clean and very useful, with a nice fridge and freezer. IGA was about a 10 min walk away. The rooms were much nicer than we expected.

This is no fault of the Underground Motel, but there was a big, aggressive dog without a leash next door that barked at us and almost chased us as we were walking back from the store. Thankfully the owner was there to call the dog back, but it was quite scary...
