This older home has been lovingly maintained. We had a Japanese room with a private toilet and used the shared showers. Very comfortable and staff spoke excellent English and were very kind and helpful Breakfast was somewhat self-serve but adequate (hard boil eggs and toast with jam) plus coffee ( a real plus). We were able to sleep with the windows open, which was a nice break from all the air-con rooms. Parking was easy, close by, and free. Staff recommended we walk to the evening traditional dance performance at a temple - which we did - that made for a lovely evening.

Nice room with new attached bath. Simple breakfast included.
We had some difficulties finding the location as locals directed us to another ryokan on a hill. Somehow GPS was not showing the location correctly for a start. The small town has limited food choices after 5.30pm as many restaurants close by 5.30pm. So travellers on free n easy may not find food easily. Even restaurants in hotels turn you away as they only serve their own guests who booked dinner. No walk-in guests! Overall the ryokan is good for 1 nite stay as it's decent.

The breakfast was quaint and cozy. It's just toast and tea/coffee, but the jam, butter and honey combo were amazing. Also there are boiled eggs. Our room had its own bathroom and we loved it. Very comfortable stay. Location was perfect. We walked to the shrine to watch the yagura performance like 5 minutes away walking. Then we went to the gorge the next day, which was just a couple minute drive. The view from the room was beautiful!
Personally, I struggle to sleep on futons, but I still slept pretty solidly. My friend slept perfectly.

It was an exceptionally pleasant stay. I really wanted to go to Takachiho on my trip, of course also because of the gorge. Rooms in Takachiho were very rare, so I was very happy when I found this accommodation at a very fair price. And my expectations were far exceeded. A wonderful Japanese ryokan-style room with a great view and a very helpful host. The accommodation is only a 5-minute walk from Takachiho Gorge and Takachiho-jinja Shrine (the evening Kagura performance is highly recommended). The breakfast was fine. All in all a great place to stay.

I booked same-day for a last-minute trip, and everything went very smoothly. I had a clean, spacious Japanese-style room with a private toilet and shower/bath, and giant windows with a great mountain view. The host has very good English and pointed out the various tourist spots upon check-in. The included breakfast is nothing extravagant, but great for the price. There was free on-site parking (though the lot is a bit small), and I was able to leave my car for a few hours after check-out while exploring. It's in a nice central location, so you can walk right out to Takachiho Shrine (go see the Yokagura show at 8 pm! It'll put a lot of the town's iconography into context) and nearby shops (though any restaurants open later are in the main town a bit further away). One note is that while Takachiho Gorge is technically a 10-20 minute walk away, it's still advisable to go by car instead if possible - the walk is along winding mountain roads with cars squeezing through.
Nothing comes to mind

We booked this smallish B&B for an overnight stay not expecting much as it wasn't expensive but it was much better than we expected. It was spotless and small little extra touches made it perfect. The manager/owner spoke perfect English, the breakfast was good, there was a small kitchen that we could have used to cook our own food and there was free coffee and tea available throughout the day and night. The Gorge and the shrine (where the Kagura show is performed nightly) is within 400 metres of the property but the rest of the town including restaurants are a little further away.
Nothing I can think of except that it's about a kilometre from the main town was a little forbidding in the cold winter in the dark if we had to walk out for dinner but fortunately we had a car. 酒処 粋 Isakaya restaurant at 10 Mitai is highly recommended. The owner/chef is a former train driver and still takes his engine out for a 10-15min spin with tourists during the weekends.

Very cool traditional style room with modern ammenities (Toilet, shower, Bath). The downstairs area has an awesome collection of manga (however it is all in Japanese). We stayed here while we went to the Gorge and the Kagura Dancing. It is very close to both and worth the trip. The staff were very helpful and provided clothes washing service to us which was very helpful.

We booked a room with private bath. Very clean, larger than normal Japanese, futon on the floor. The breakfast is very basic, boiled egg and toast, coffee, tea. The location is great, very close to the small road to Tachachiho Gorge. We parked our car at the B&B and walked.
My husband doesn't like sleeping on the floor, but we knew ahead of time.

This B&B is very nice Japanese style accommodation: my room was a spacious and comfortable tatami room with balcony and bathroom attached. Breakfast room and common area was well equipped and breakfast was satisfying. Host Yasu speaks good English and is ready to provide any information you need.

Cosy hostel style property with common area, though we had private bathroom in large room we had booked. Breakfast included, simple but enjoyable. Comfy futons.
Nothing, it was older style and simple but it was as expected and it was totally functional and lovely.
