I’ve never written a review here but this stay prompted me to! I’ve stayed in many of the finest hotels around the world, but this (although not a hotel) was one of my favorites. Quiet & Relaxing - It is extremely relaxing and quiet both inside and out. The garden is peaceful and the views from the room are perfect. The Constant flowing water & incense is soothing. Great location - While relaxing it’s is in the heart of Gion a traditional area, which is close to all of the restaurants and bars as well as many temples. I walked almost everywhere from here. It’s also very close to the transit stops. Reading room - I woke up and read in the guest room with tea over looking the fish in the garden. My favorite room. Comfortable - Bed was surprisingly comfortable. Value - You simply can’t beat the value. Hiro should honestly raise the prices - it’s unreal. Host - Is the man. Gave me recommendations on where to visit, what great offs to make, and restaurants to seek out (book your restaurants in advance via phone or go in person. They are usually small and many won’t take you in same day - Hiro can help you navigate them.

This is a quaint, cozy ryokan that feels like a home. The host meets you in the 'living room' to checkin and go over house rules. There's even a fully equipped kitchen if you want to prepare your own meals. We stayed in a tatami mat room, and the futons were very comfortable. Headroom is low, watch the center beam. Be prepared, shoes off at the front door. We also had a view of the garden and koi pond; it felt from another era. I wish we'd booked more than one night to enjoy the lovely experience.

Lovely old house with lots of little unexpected spaces. This starts already at the entrance. Communal rooms beautiful decorated. We had a family room. Simple but made if beautiful materials and convenient. Hiro made us feel welcome and was helpful explaining the city. Communal kitchen was comfortable and spacious. Nit sure how, but the sharing of the space went perfect. We had family breakfasts without others. If you go, don't forget to check out the slmost hidden tiny space overlooking the garden!

The familyroom is small when all futons are rolled out and we all were in with our bags. That being said, we knew we could expect this as it is an old house in the Gion neighbourhood, where houses are small. So, to me, nothing negative!

Staying at Gionkoh was an incredible experience. The house is done up so beautifully and the wonderful host, Hiro, works so hard to keep it clean and to make sure guests are comfortable and enjoy the stay. The location is absolutely perfect - walking distance to everything you could want to see in Gion and although it's in the center the street it's on is quieter than the main streets which is perfect. A perfect, peaceful, escape right in the center of everything. Our room overlooked a beautiful inside garden with a koi fish pond which was so peaceful to look out at. Hiro is an amazing host who is there when you need him but never invades your space. He is kind and helpful and has created a beautiful hotel in the perfect location.

It is traditional style so you must be prepared to sleep on the mats on the floor and understand this isn't a 5 star hotel. It's a traditional style hotel room but that makes for a more authentic experience. If we come back to Gion (which we hope we will) we would definitely choose to stay at Gion Koh again and would recommend it to everyone!

This was a perfect place for us. It was easy to get to from station by public bus.The location meant we could really enjoy wandering around Gion and local temples early morning before the horrific crowds and also easy to bus to further away attractions. Convenience stores close by and a great kitchen to enjoy meals. We had shared bathroom but not a problem as private ,very clean and modern. The room second floor with sun streaming in afternoons. A really lovely central courtyard garden to sit by. All was always very clean and quiet.Evenings an easy walk to the main entertainment area. To top of it the owner Hiro (Koh) ,who runs what was once his grandmother's business is lovely to speak with. His English is good and he gave us good recommendation. In addition he happily forwarded on our luggage for us.

I don't think there is a better location to stay in Kyoto, a 15m walk to more than a dozen interesting places. Shrines, shopping, restaurants, the river etc. An absolutely unbeatable value as well. Very comfortable bed in the 'western double' room on the back side of the second floor. Cold AC was great after being out walking around all day in the hot and humid weather. The inner garden is beautiful as well!

You will likely have to use the shared restroom with other guests, some of which might leave a mess around sinks, showers, and toilets. Hiro keeps it clean, it just depends on if you have to use these facilities right after someone else who isn't considerate of others.

An excellent location for this spectacular house in Gion. The traditional furnishings are beautiful and the house has exceptional charm. The inner garden is lovely and my partner and I spent a fair bit of time watching the koi fish in the pond from our second story window. The kitchen is spotless with plenty of cutlery. And the owner is very kind and accommodating - he was so helpful! We stayed in the private room with futons and a private bathroom, which was totally worth it!

As it is a traditional Japanese house, there's not much by way of sound proofing. Some guests were not so mindful of their volume during our stay. On our first night, someone had a terrible cough, which was out of anyone's control, but if you're an especially light sleeper be sure to bring earplugs.

My favorite accomodations in Japan, a very beautiful traditional Japanese house with cozy gardens and lively koi fish. The room is very spacious and has a courtyard view, so beautiful that I don't want to sleep at all. Toilets and bathrooms are very clean. The handsome waiter speaks fluent English and has a very good service attitude. The infrastructure is complete. Its location is very close to various attractions and is very convenient.

The owner is very friendly and super helpful as well as considerate! The location is awesome, close to lots of seneric places! Room (family room) is spacious and very Japanese style. My mum asked me to emphasize that she likes the owner very much because of his hospitality! Lol 😂

Cons (personal opinion): shower room does not have a place to hang the shower head; only find small tea cups (no big cups for teeth brushing).

We liked the location. It was near downtown Kyoto and there were great restaurants within walking distance including the one literally across from it, Ueno. We loved the decor and even spent a little bit of time in the sitting room area to admire the courtyard koi pond. It was very relaxing.

I didn't have any issues, but my husband is a very tall man. He is 6'-3" and the entry to the restroom was too low for him. He had to keep ducking whenever he needed to use the restroom because of his height. I wouldn't recommend this for tall people. The mattress we used was quite thin as well. It would have helped if it was just a tad thicker, but I just reminded myself that it's like laying in a sleeping bag on the ground.
