The hotel is very easy to get to if you have a rental car. Might be more difficult if you don't have one. The view from our room was really nice, and the hotel lobby had a fireplace and refreshments, which was very pleasant on a cold evening. Dinner was exceptional: very delicious set menu and great service. Overall, the staff were top-notch.
I may have misunderstood the room listing, but I was under the impression that there was also an onsen on our balcony. It was only a tub. The water was hot, but not hot enough to be enjoyable when the outside temperature was 0 celsius.

The independent space to enjoy the Onsen. Connection with nature. Quietness and space in the room.
There is a bus that goes from Nikko to the venue, but don't know why they don't think about organising in relation to the train times. There are two train stations, and both go to Tokyo. They could have organised it so ppl arriving from Touko could make it with the next hour, and leaving by the bus an hour earlier than to walk around with the suitcase. Logically, the connections are not well planned. Obviously, either they don't know this and don't do anything about it, or they do know it and want to make travel to and from Nikko difficult for non car owners.

The hotel was very beautiful and all the rooms were very private and spacious. Because it's in such a rural area in clear nights you get to also see quite a beautiful starry night. They provided "bathing clothes" and slippers you can wear around in the hotel, they have different sizes, up to what they refer to as extra large, which is more like a north-american large.
The smell of sulfur did get to us by the end of our stay. Staff is hit and miss, the cleaning people were beyond kind, the restaurant servers worked really hard and the front desk had the vibe of wishing they were not there. It really is remote, although there is a bus that stop near the hotel, i would say this is best visited with a car.

This is the second time I stayed in this place, the best thing is the indoor hot bath and you can see the forest and the lake. The room is very spacious, big enough for a group of 4 people. If you are gonna stay here, you MUST book this type of room! Nature is awesome, you could see the wild animals passing by from time to time, I saw a deer last time, and a white fox this time. which is an amazing experience. it feels like camping in the wild, but comfortable enough to enjoy it. If you are seeking true relaxation and escape from the crowded city life, this is one of the best places to come. A 2-night stay is highly recommended.
The food is average with a very small proportion , I do not think the dinner plan is worth the price, you can book one night to give it a try, but I am pretty sure you will need some extra to be full. so make sure to bring some food before coming. The location is in the middle of the lake shore, it takes 30 minutes to walk to the town, and there is a long slope to walk from the bus station to the entrance to the hotel, so if you don't have a car, you will rely on the bus. this is not a problem, more like a preference, if you are driving, this is not a problem at all.

The Hotel offers a Shuttle bus to pick you up from the train station in town as well as drop you off. It is only once a day so make sure you contact them in advance to reserve your spot. They also have a lovely lounge with complimentary drinks and a beautiful view of the forest. All of the workers we spoke to were so kind and helpful. We do not speak Japanese and we had no problems with any communication or requests. Our room was beautiful and spacious and ours included a bath on the porch. The room is traditional style and we were ecstatic. I requested a vegetarian meal in advance and the Hotel made an amazing dinner and breakfast for my partner and I. Cannot say enough good things about our experience here!

We had an issue with a leaky sink in our room the first night, we were moved into an upgraded room with a bath on the balcony. The rooms were both very comfortable, it is definitely worth paying a bit extra for the upgraded room. In reception you can help yourself to sparkling or hot wine, tea, coffee and juices at various times of day. Very peaceful location and the hotel provide a shuttle service to town and to the train station.
The long walk up to the hotel with bags……..also, make sure you stay on the bus long enough. We were confused because the address we copied took us to an abandoned building first of all. We had to get back on a bus and go a little further. Limited food options once you are there. All meals are traditional Japanese, which is nice but very difficult for vegetarians and snacks throughout the day are not available.

This is not a unique format for Japan, but I liked how it was executed. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. The room itself is conducive to physical and mental relaxation.
It’s a pity that there is no hot sauna, after the baths I wanted to warm up even hotter (a habit of a resident of the northern territories) Strangely, not all the staff at the reception know basic English. It is necessary to actively warn guests during registration that they should remove all jewelry before swimming in the spring, as the jewelry changes its color.

The open air bathtub was absolutely the best. We liked the forest location and used the local bus and hotel shuttle for transportation without any issues. We often saw deer and Japanese martens while sitting on our deck in the afternoon. The evening beer and wine was a nice touch. Dinner was also amazing, like a multi course work of art. I needed training to know how to eat it though. The wait staff were really friendly and helpful. We didn’t do the breakfast.
The lobby was stuffy at times and smelled a little like sulphur. Made me want to open a window and air it out!

The cleanliness, the interior of the room, the location and the view. The hotel may look old but they definitely spent resources modernising the inside and the rooms which definitely made the stay more pleasant. The outdoor hot springs were wonderful too
The dinner provided (requires a top up). Not worth the value paid. I think kaiseki is a great idea but for that price it’s better paying it at a restaurant

Absolutely gorgeous location with great dinner, great rooms and onsen.
Communication was bad prior to the stay. Thought I had booked a room with a private onsen and asked to confirm but got no reply. This meant we had to pay more at the time. May be a language issue, but the lack of a reply was not ideal.
