Beautiful house, well decorated. Almost like a museum. The toilet is also well stocked with amenities. You really get the feeling that this is someone’s home, and everything is very personal. You can see how much love the owner has for this place and his pets ❤️ it was eyeopening and I learned a lot. I was also the only guest in my room, and it was a very comfortable stay :) the bed and pillow seemed a little harder than what I’m used to, but it was actually really comfortable haha. It was my first hostel experience and now I’m afraid no other hostel can live up to the standard of this.

It was a little cold at night but there are many blankets to help with that. The floorboards also creak in the morning whenever people step on it, and since everyone is up early it can get a little noisy. But these are minor flaws, amidst a very wonderful experience.

I booked at this hostel based on someone's recommendation from another hostel. I have spent nearly a year in Japan and this is one of my favourite hostels I have stayed in! I met up with my friend in Otaru and we both stayed in the female-only dorm. The location is great, and we were lucky to see some fireworks from the veranda outside. The entire environment is very cosy, there is a whole wall full of DVDs that are free to watch, so we watched a Ghibli film nearly every night we stayed. There's also a huge selection of books, manga and games too, with lots of cosy spaces to enjoy. The host and staff members were very helpful, friendly and kind. And of course they have a dog and cat so that is the cherry on top!

My only note would be for people with heavy luggage - the hostel is located at the top of a fairly steep hill. It's totally doable, but just mentally prepare yourself for an uphill walk if you have a large suitcase; this is completely not the hostel's fault though, more mine for having so much stuff.

I quite enjoyed my stay at this hostel. Even though you cannot open the window because of the insect concern, you will not feel warm or hot inside of the hostel or your dorm. There are enough fans available for summer days. The hostel is in a Japanese style standalone house, you will have a good experience of living in a Japanese home. Huge san and Momo san are very cute and friendly pet in this hostel. I love the breakfast provided in this hostel that are exceed of my expectation, I even feel it better than some hotels ;) The location of the hostel is also good if you arrived at JR 南小樽. It took around 10-13 mins by foot from the JR station to the hostel. The stuff in this hostel is also very friendly and helpful. I think I will stay here again if I travel to Otaru again.

A homey and cozy hostel with tons of character - Hug the corgi, Momo the cat, the bric a brac everywhere, bean bags for chilling, beer and banana bread, and a lovely owner. I could have happily spent a whole day reading in the common room!

Mattress and pillow could be softer.

Shorter walk to hostel from Minami-Otaru Station than Otaru station | easier walk with backpack than with luggage | hot shower, towel/soap provided | solid WiFi | nice breakfast available (500-yen) | coordinated with host to drop-off backpack prior to check-in, greatly appreciated | credit card accepted on-site to pay for reservation |

Full spread local breakfast for ¥500, definitely worth it! Breakfast varied each day. It’s uphill to get to so prepare for a hike, place was a wonder full of books and surrounded by greenery. Would like to stay during winter to enjoy the snow from inside.

Nothing, even the trek up to get there was fun both ways.

This guesthouse is absolutely lovely. There are mangas everywhere (and one in english about Ainou!), cosy common spaces where it's really nice to hang out, great decoration... We feel a little at home. The host is adorable and the beds comfortable. One of the guesthouses I liked the most so far :)

Spent three wonderful days here, very cozy Japanese traditional house. The staff make me feel warm. What's interesting is that on Chinese New Year's Eve (it's also my birthday) I sat in the restaurant with the hostel boss I guess, I was eating my meal, he was using the computer, and it was quiet around the fire until late at night. He kindly helped me clean up my kitchen waste. I got a sticker at the front desk to put on my suitcase. All are unforgettable memories.

Both of the host were very accommodating and helpful in getting many tips about Otaru and the location is close by all of the main streets attractions. Definitely have the home cook breakfast from Mayomi ! It was an absolute delight ❤️

I wish I could play more with Hug but he’s just old and tired 🐶
