Our stay at Ryokan Tanabe was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. The staff were so charming, welcoming and attentive. The building is very traditional and beautiful, and the onsen was fabulous. The dinner and breakfast were so beautifully prepared, and we were especially grateful that they accommodated us as vegetarians. The vegetarian breakfast in particular was one of the best meals we had in Japan. We sadly could only stay one night but it was amazing and we highly recommend to anyone wanting a traditional Ryokan experience in this wonderful part of Japan.

The room was well appointed and sleeping on futons amazingly comfortable. The staff were friendly, the onsen lovely and the kaiseki meals delicious.

This is a ryokan. It's a different experience from what an American or Europaen would expect from a hotel like this. There is an onsen (Japanese mineral bath) and the dinners and breakfasts are served in your room. I've stayed in many ryokans and this is one of the most traditional and best. They maintain the property with excellence and we've stayed in this particular ryokan 5 times over the years. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a truly traditional Japanese experience.

Room was lovely and traditional, though not the most comfortable futon beds we slept on during our Japan trip (ask for a second futon mattress!). Location was great -- easy access to train/bus station as well as old town and morning market. Onsens were traditional - one inside (hot spring) and two small (heated water) tubs outside. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

We did half board with all meals served inside our room. This was not the best kaiseki experience we had, and we found the food to be fine, but not exceptional. There are so many cafes and izakayas nearby that it was a shame we had to eat in the hotel.

Everything really. The staff is so helpful (I asked for the ingredients of a sauce we like and they printed us a recipe, how cute). We have a massage there. So good. In your room and even good value. Dinner is in your room and they make your bed after. In the middle of town. Amazing place !

Bit hard to find where it is from outside but that is most things in japan. I loved everything. Maybe onsen a but small but even. One of the best place I stayed in japan.

All staff are very kind and dedicated, the dinner and breakfast was delicious and we added the sake taste experience to the dinner, which was great! The location is just perfect. The Japanese style tatami rooms reveal to be very comfortable and a great experience.

Unfortunately, during our stay there was a group of guests at the males onsen with kids, not really respecting the space of others. An experience that was supposed to be relaxing, ended up being stressful and unpleasant. Probably we were just unlucky... At the women's onsen, the experience was great.

This was our second stay at Ryokan Tanabe And will not be our last stay with them. Takayama is so lovely and a must visit and a must stay here. Family run business with wonderful warm staff everyone was very kind to us and the meals are delicious. We were lucky to book a new suite but the older rooms which we stayed in last visit are even more traditional they are also just as lovely. I would be happy to try them all. The place is really traditional and this is what we loved. It was very quiet and cosy. It was definitely an experience we loved trying. The ladies that prepared our food were very nice (the food - dinner and breakfast - was set in our room by 2 lovely ladies). We used the public baths as well and it was not crowded at all. We loved the experience

The outside onsen water had a very strong smell of chlorine, which I found it very odd.

Second time that we stayed here. The staff was extremely friendly ( although some did not speak English at all, contrary to out first visit) . the room was great!

We had booked a room with breakfast. We asked if we could pay extra to still have dinner but that was not possible. A real bummer as we were kind of set on it and we had been given the option of dinner the first time we visited in the exact same situation. WiFi did not work at all no matter how many times I tried and was very spotty on my partner's phone. All in all it was a step down from the first time but I would still recommend this place and enjoyed my time there! I'm being a bit more critical here, mainly because ryokans are more expensive places and I think details matter in such cases...

There are three main reasons we wanted to stay at this ryokan: the on-site onsen, the traditional Japanese meals served in your room (dinner and breakfast), and experience the Japanese traditional room. Please note you will be sleeping on the floor on futons, which found comfortable. We selected Tanabe met these requirements but exceptionally well. We were pampered. We are thankful for there attention to detail and the clean property. The rooms were spacious and quiet! We loved that we were a 5-8min walk from the train station. 1 min walk from the morning market and the old town full of beautiful wood-carved houses/buildings. We only wished we could have stayed more than 1 night, but we had so much to see and do in Japan. You will not regret staying at Tanabe.
