Hotel Hortus is a simple guest house in a safe & quiet part of the city , within walking distance to the Opera House & on the routes of a couple tram lines forecast travel. It is kept immaculately clean; and it is a very good budget option. But it will not be to everyone's tastes. The single room was small and had its own sink. Showers & toilets were just nextvdoor down the hall. The hotel is in a renovated house, so the stairs are very steep & narrow. I was aware of this when I booked. During my stay I visited the Anne Frank House, & saw similar stairs. This is common for heritage homes in Amsterdam; so this really gave the feeling of living in Amsterdam & not just being a tourist. There is a beautiful park across the street, and diwn on the corner a wonderful pub serving fantastic food. When I booked this hotel, I was worried that the positive reviews were too good to be true. But yes they arevtrue. I would absolutely stay here again.
For people with mobility issues, staying on the upper floor is not an option. Office is not open late, but the owner still keeps good track of goings on. Some people came in middle of the night drunk & noisy and she took action immediately without anyone having to ask. I was very impressed.

April 2025
We stayed at Hotel Hortus from April 10 to April 13, 2025, and had a wonderful experience. The room was small but very clean, equipped with a shower and everything necessary for a comfortable stay (a fan, hairdryer, and TV). We especially want to highlight the very friendly and welcoming attitude of the reception staff. Upon our request, they kindly provided us with hot water for coffee. Our room was on the second floor, which is accessed by a steep staircase with a soft, non-slip covering. It didn’t cause any inconvenience for us, though it might be a bit challenging for elderly guests or those with mobility issues. Another great highlight was the beautiful view of the botanical garden, which is just across the street. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can sincerely recommend this hotel for a comfortable stay right in the heart of the city. Thank you to the staff for making our time in Amsterdam so pleasant!

Very good value for money. The hotel wears on its sleeve that it is a budget hotel with next to no bonus items hotels usually give you, but with shops nearby you can get your own so this isn't a problem. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the atmosphere in the room was good. Overall absolutely perfect for 1 night, or a weekend if I'd be inclined next time.
The stairs are absolutely brutal. This won't be a problem if you have light luggage or a backpack only, but is not great if you have heavy luggage or if you're elderly. It is completely inaccessible if you're in a wheelchair (though I do believe they have ground floor rooms). The rooms aren't very sound insulated so bear that in mind.

When I booked back-to-back reservations the let me consolidate so I could stay in the same room. They also fulfilled my request for a quiet room. Above all, the staff was very helpful, informative, and friendly, like telling me about the great nearby corner restaurant. It was also nice to be told that going towards the city center that restaurants would get more expensive, and very expensive in the city center. And that restaurants in the area of the hotel and going away from the city center are cozy and less expensive. The hotel is also pretty close to a subway/metro stop.

A good place to stay overnight and explore the city — the train station is about a 20-minute walk away. The staff is very friendly. The room has a hairdryer, towels, and a sink; the shower and toilet are shared. There's a lovely common kitchen where you can heat up ready-made food (microwave available), and there are plates and cutlery. The room is warm, and you can open the window if you want. We were also allowed to leave our bags after check-out, which was very convenient.
The sound insulation is weak, but it wasn’t an issue for us since our neighbors were quiet

We walked in from Amsterdam central station (after a flight from England) at 9:30pm. Harley greeted us and nothing was too much trouble! He directed us to the nearest place to grab some quick tea and explained we could bring it back to the hotel and use the dining table and kitchenware. Harley then explained we could use the tram service for our stay, how to use them where to catch them etc. he helped us work out timings to return to the airport and gave us advice on other places to visit! We then met his auntie the next day and she was just as helpful and welcoming. She even made my daughter a hot chocolate to have just before bed! The room was basic but perfect for a base for our trip. The beds were comfortable and the shower was powerful and lovely and warm!! There was a shared toilet (2 on the landing). They were always clean and well kept and we never had to wait to use them! The WiFi in the hotel was also decent!
There was nothing to dislike.

The location and the friendly staff. The mattresses were not comfortable in our first night, we mentioned it and they were changed immediately, excellent service.
Rooms were very small even for a twin room, shower but no toilet, shared toilets were exceptionally small and cramped. No 24hr check-in option meant that we had to spend €60 on a taxi to get there before the 11:30pm desk closing… when we arrived were told by reception that they would have been happy to let us in up until 12:30-1am! We could have saved a lot of money if they had been clearer about this. The bag room is in a public space in the courtyard, not in a locked room or office, I did not feel very happy leaving our belongings there but had no choice.

The staff were excellent helping in every which way they could. The property was clean and located in easy walking distance of the centre. It was in a quiet location out of the hustle and bustle.
The room was extremely small with a shower room that was difficult to get dry and dressed in. We found we had to get undressed before entering the shower room and get dry and dressed outside the shower room. The shared toilet located in the corridor was tiny and impossible to turn around once inside with the door shut. There were no tea making facilities in the room so take a kettle if booking at the property.

Good location , easy to find. There's AH and Jumbo like 10min walking distance. The hotel is situated by the main street where you can take a tram right to the Centraal station. We were also able to walk to attractions. The staff was very nice. They help us with our questions. After we check out we still have whole day to spent in the city - there was no problem to leave our baggage for the day (And because the reception works till 11pm - that was helpful and really nice) The bed was comfortable and the room got nice heating (after walking in the rain we could dry our clothes by the raidiator) The TV works well , we're able to connect our amazon account and enjoy watching our favourite show. They had a nice reception area with comfy couches, some refreshmenrs, and there's a wending machine on the hallway(with snacks and drinks). And there's a little closed tarras. There's a park next to the hotel (small but nice) and also a palm house (you can buy tickets online)
The shower had separate knobs for hot and cold water, so it takes a little time (and wasting water) to adjust it to your likings. And it didn't keep stable temperature . Maybe it was only in our room(?)

This was probably the most unforgettable experience of staying at a hotel. The building itself is beautiful, a very cozy and nice hotel, which is located in the very center of Amsterdam. Everything is steeped in history, every corner of this building. But the most unforgettable experience is the service provided by the entire team and the owner of the hotel. The most hospitable, the most responsive and the most cheerful people. In general, if you want to feel at home during your trip, then this hotel will be the best choice.
