The staff were amazing, very friendly and couldn't do enough for us..the beds while basic were soft and clean the location was nice by the park near a couple of small bars and a coffee shop, but also a short walk to the metro or centre. A tram stop 100m from the hotel although we didn't use the trams as we enjoyed walking.everywhere. the little yard was quaint with blankets and seating.

The stairs are steeper than you might imagine, don't take large cases as we struggled with our cabin bags. The shared toilets were clean but was only one on our floor so often had to go downstairs to use the wc. This isn't a complaint as we got used to it, but something to consider if this would be a problem.for you.. the rooms are extremely basic and I found the mattress moved off the bed base In the night so I think sturdier beds would've helped. Also we had nowhere to put our cases and a very small storage cupboard so we couldn't really unpack . A few hangers or a clothes rail on the sloped ceiling would've been really helpful in this case. I'd describe the room more like a private hostel but would still return as we really enjoyed our stay and the price was appropriate.

The position was very central and the stuff was super nice.

Our room was on the top floor and the stairs were quite steep.

My first time in Amsterdam and I feel like we couldn’t have picked a better place to stay! Staff were amazing so friendly and helpful at all times genuinely couldn’t thank them enough! The value for money was amazing rooms are basic but perfect for what you need. The hotel was in a great location we walked to almost everywhere apart from the airport and got a bolt one of the days to a museum that was further out! They had a lovely little lounge area with some couches microwaves a toaster etc if you wanted to make some food and a lovely little garden out the back. We will absolutely stay here again and again thank you to the amazing staff!

We liked a lot the location of the hotel, on the quiet street in a good central neighborhood. One of us arrived about 1 hour before the check in time but was allowed to get the room immediately. The room was quite spacious, the bed comfortable, there was both a shower and a sink in a room, a place to hang the clothes, hairdryer and a small table with two chairs where we could have breakfast/supper. There is a comfortable lounge in the hotel, with a fridge for the guests and a snack machine. The owners of the hotel were very friendly. There were two toilets at the same floor where our room was and no problems to use them, everything nice and clean. There also was a liquid soap both at the toilets, at the sink and in the shower, very convenient.

It's not a fault of the hotel, but the stairs are typical for old Dutch houses, quite steep. Also, in our room nr.12 the mattress from the one side of the bed was for about 15 cm wider than the base of the bed and my sister fell down from the bed during the night but nothing bad happened. Every guest gets just one big towel, so if you wish to have a separate towel for your face, it's better to bring one with you.

The room is well- thought of; although small, everything that is needed, is there - a bed, a table, a locker and a sink. Ideal for solo travellers. Everything is very clean. The person who checked me in was respectful and friendly. Just the atmosphere about it is nice, I could feel the owners and workers are nice people and really care for the guests.

It was noisy.... People in ajacent 2 rooms do not see you, so are not careful, and you can hear their every movement and every word. Good I did not speak their languages : ) so it was easier to kind of " switch off" . I still rate 5 stars because I was so tired I still rested well, but it is something to be considered by those who are coming.

Clean, simple, basic and comfortable. Even had a sink in our room which was convenient. Perfect place for a short stay or trip as it’s really just somewhere to sleep after a day of exploring, I came here recently with my boyfriend and as Uni students we were chuffed with the place. Felt very safe and It had everything we needed for a great price that didn’t break the bank and it was perfect. We didn’t fancy staying in a hostel and hotels in the center were too expensive and this was a perfect compromise.

It’s a 10 minute walk into the main areas but it’s not far at all you pass cafes and coffee shops so we didn’t mind, it’s in a nice local and quiet at night area. Although we were given 2 single beds that slid off the sides even though they were pushed together it wasn’t a big deal, we made do:)

excellent location in a quiet neighborhood near botanic garden. cheerful and helpful staff. clean shared bathroom and toilet. actually everything was clean. the room has regulated heating, so you won't be cold. the hotel provides a coffee machine (for money) and a microwave in the hall near reception.

soundproofing was poor, i heard the other guests through the walls. i enjoyed the authenticity of the building, but the steep staircase might be an issue for older or weaker tenants. regulating the temperature in the shower sometimes required some skills. but overall staying in Hortus hotel was a really good experience.

The staff are friendly and helpful. Even tho a shared toilet, there was a shower in the room. Thought was put into making sure everything needed was available. There is a little community fridge on first level, if you smoke (or not) there's a patio available. A microwave, utensils are also provided and towels. You do need to bring your own toiletries. It was very clean here as well.

If you are unable to do steep Dutch stairs, probably not the place for you. Unless you get first level accommodation. If staff is available they'll help best they can. There was actually nothing that I didn't like. Also, if you're a really large person (I'm big) some of the toilets might be small for you.

We loved Hotel Hortus. Before arrival, we were worried it was a little far out of the centre. But it was walkable to the centre, and not far from the tram stop. It was a great location. Moreover, we loved the area that it was in. It was really pleasant, and we were actually glad to be here and not closer to the centre which we found much more busy and touristy. The staff at Hotel Hortus were great. We arrived early, but our room was ready anyway. Then when we left, it was really helpful that we could use the luggage store after we checked out - it meant we could enjoy a lovely morning at the zoo around the corner, then just pop back. Amsterdam on the whole seems to be expensive for accommodation, so Hotel Hortus is good value.

Nothing at all really. The stairs up to the second floor are really steep, This wasn't a problem for us, but I suppose it might bother some people. It was a shared toilet but we knew this when we booked, and at least there was a shower and sink in the room. So again it wasn't a problem.

The staff were extremely friendly and made it seem like a home from home. They only monitor reception 8-11. It has a clean neat lounge area & the overall hotel and area was very quiet. Make sure to take some extra change to pay for some food (you can use the microwave etc), and vending machine & coffee machine- hot chocolates €2 were the best. The tram stop is close just to the right, 30 seconds round the corner- tram 14 to get to and from centraal. Ice bar & the zoo is right nearby. Rooms are very basic but good if you’re busy exploring like us. I would return!
