For a hostel, we thought it was quite nice and had a lot of personality. Both the outside & inside of the hostel is quite colorful, giving the whole place a quirky touch. Stayed in a room with private bathroom, which was clean, and the hostel even provided bath towels to our surprise. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking supplies and utensils, and in the shared space, there are hot water bags that you can fill up to help heat your bed.

Though there is heating in each unit, the heater in our room was timed. So each time you press the on button, it would run for a while and then automatically turn off. So, be prepared for the room to feel a bit more chilly in the morning, especially when visiting late winter/early spring or early winter/late fall. Parking is behind the hostel, which may be a bit confusing to find at first. But, there are plenty of spots.

The property was very clean and the owner was always walking through the place tidying up. I left some water on the floor in the bathroom and felt guilty leaving it as I couldn't find a mop but it must have been cleaned in the middle of the night as it was dry by early morning. The common room had a warm coal fire that the owner ensured was always full and their was a basket of hot water bottles that were free to use which helped with the cold weather. The place was older in style and condition but you could see the rooms that had already been renovated. The toilet walls that have been renovated were painted a beautiful green and the bins, toilet holder etc were modernised in this room. I look forward to visiting again in the future and seeing the next renovations

The hostel was warm and had a lovely atmosphere to it. It wasn’t to most modern hostel we have been to but probably one of our favourites. It had a personality and the interior was fun and a good atmosphere. The owner was extremely kind and very fun to talk to, definitely making our stay 100% better. The room we had was private and was very good value for money, would definitely stay again if in the area! It gave free tea and coffee alongside milk which was also a lovely touch!

The only thing to fault it was slightly cold at night as don’t think it had central heating but the rooms did come with heaters. But it was manageable!

Everything was awesome! Our son Absolutely LOVED the games room! Which had a pool table, table tennis, with ample seatings with extra stools & tables for sitting to either enjoy a snack whilst looking out the windows into town or simply just to enjoy reading a book. Beds were very comfortable, a well equipped very spacious kitchen, with a separate dining/lounge area which has a log burner & the staff always lit the fire for evening dinners which was lovely whilst guest were enjoying their meals. Staff were very helpful and welcoming. They had great knowledge of the area & everything they recommended we tried during our stay was perfect especially as it was our first time visiting Greymouth and thanks to our experience here at Duke this will definitely NOT be our last 😊 Location is perfect & loads of free parking at the rear. No need to drive around town as the Hostel is located in the heart of Greymouth. We look forward to visiting again.

Visit was too short

The room was larger than expected, clean and with a decent (if small) bathroom. It looked like everything had been recently repainted and redecorated in fun, quirky colours and it had a lovely atmosphere. It's a good location from which to get around as well, and not too far from the train station.

Service is minimal, so we had to wait a while for someone to come check us in, and even longer the next morning to ask if we could leave our bags for a few hours. We were shown the kitchen but not told how to make coffee / where things were. They did show us two rooms to choose from, though and were friendly when we saw them.

This is a building in the process of being restored. It's potential is large but a way off yet. The rooms are progressively being updated. We stayed in an updated one and it was great for what we needed. Travellers should know the building overall is rough around the edges and you will encounter older areas not yet updated such as the toilet and shower area and lounge .. but it was comfortable and the owner man kind and helpful. For the price paid I think it's good. By buying accommodation at the duke you would actually be helping progress the restoration of this old building! There was a fire going in the lounge room, and the kitchen is huge! Plenty of room and pots/pans etc if you wanted to cook your own food.

The towels are dried outside (fine) but if put into the dryer to finish off they might soften up a bit. :)

The Duke Hotel is a building with a lot of character. Certainly easy to spot with its brightly painted yellow exterior. It actually has an interesting history to it- the original newspaper article with photos of it's original owner & the interesting history behind the hotel can be seen in Great Room near the kitchen. The manager Glen is a gem of a man. Friendly, funny, serviceable & kind. He wears multiple "hats" at the hotel from administration to preparing the rooms for guest. Due to me not feeling well, he was so gracious to offer me an upgrade -my room was absolutely beautiful!!!! What a great unexpected treat. Hotel is well located with a great bakery just a few doors down the street, an Organic food market next door and the railway station a 10-15 min walk with lots of quaint shops along the way. There is a fantastic bookshop FILLED with a great variety of vintage books & other cool curios.

Two toilets near my room were out of order, had to go around to other side of hall to use the toilet. Shower rooms were also on other side. Kitchen was well enough stocked but equipment such as the stove, ovens quite old.

The hospitality was amazing! I stayed during the low season and was upgraded to a single room. The hostel owner was very friendly and was always there to share places to visit around the area and his stories. Could totally feel his passion for the place and the west coast :D Loved the West Coast and Duke hostel and would recommend to anyone coming to this area!

The place never felt warm enough, and the heater in the room was never warm enough.

I got to meet the owner and his son apon arrival. Glen was most welcoming, and upgraded my room. Which I think was was top notch. Which to me represents the true kiwi hospitality on the Westcoast region on NZ. Most importantly Glen informed me of an upcoming event. He sold me on the whait bait sangers so. I booked in for 4 nights over the only motorcystreet race in Greymouth. Looking forward to it. Plus the mysterious Duke Hostel Cocktail. Which now The Duke Hostel is now quietly famous for!!! Church Mr Glen

Rooms were abit cold. But it is the West Coast. So it will be cold everywhere. One must remember, this is a Hostel. So not everything can be perfect. But the fireplace was always stocked up by the host. P.s. good way to hangout and have a yarn to all travelers

Had a very friendly and enthusiastic welcome. The owner was great. He showed us around and talked about the area giving us clear information about where to go. Bedroom was clean and tidy. Bed was very comfortable. Kitchen was clean and very well equipped even had an air fryer! Dining room was comfortable and clean, easy chairs to sit on as well. Loos and showers separate and very well maintained. Would recommend for a good stay in Greymouth. Close to the shops and town and river estuary.
