Really quiet, beautiful place with an amazing ocean view when waking up. Double bed was an actual double bed (not just two twins moved together). Spacious shower with excellent water pressure and heat. Breakfast was also really ok. It was off season and there were very few guests, yet they offered different warm and cold breakfast options.

Somehow the rooms feel a bit cold in style. They are large and practical (they even had a medium sized fridge, not just a mini hotel fridge), but the rooms don’t feel cozy. Also, the fridge makes quite a bit of noise. Very few options for dinner close by - other than the on-site restaurant.

We stayed at Engenho Velho Hotel & Restaurante – Adults Only from the 6th to the 13th of July, and honestly, we didn’t want to leave! The room was spotless and super comfy, with a view that made us feel like we were living in a postcard. The bathroom? Sparkling clean and had everything we needed—no complaints there. Breakfast was a daily highlight: a full English with some tasty extras, and to my delight, they had almond milk! That meant I could enjoy my morning coffee without compromise—small win, big happiness. Now, let’s talk about the restaurant. The food was great, but the service? Even better. One name to remember: Miguel. Not only was he incredibly helpful and attentive, but he was also very easy on the eyes. Seriously, Miguel deserves a raise and a modeling contract. He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy, and thanks to him, our stay was extra special. The whole vibe of the hotel was peaceful and relaxing—exactly what we needed. If you're looking for a quiet, adults-only escape with great food, amazing views, and a charming staff (did I mention Miguel?), this place is a gem.

As for what we didn’t like—honestly, not much. We had a rental car, so the peaceful, remote location was perfect for us. The only tiny downside was the pool, which was a bit on the chilly side. It looked amazing, but getting in took a bit of courage! All in all, Engenho Velho is a hidden gem. If you're looking for a quiet, adults-only escape with great food, stunning views, and a charming staff (especially Miguel!), this is the place.

Great location, less than 1 h to each corner of the island, close to some of the most favorable hikes and even a beach, magnificent views on the sea and coast with breathtaking sunsets, modern and clean spacious room, small hotel with just 10 rooms, great restaurant with many delicious local specialities and impressive choice of wines and drinks, very competent and friendly staff!!, very good breakfast with good choices and constant refill, nice and clean pool and generous outside relaxing area, perfect to relax and enjoy vacation...

Just as recommendations, as overall it was a wonderful stay: a bit more interior style of the room could be nice, 2 relaxing deck chairs and drinking glasses to enjoy the room balcony even more would be a suitable add-on...

We visited the hotel this year late september and all the comments are true. There is nothing to complain about, everything is great. The location is perfect, it is exactly as quiet as everyone said. The rooms are huge(we booked a suite) with an enormous bathroom. Even the balcony is more than you can wish for. All is perfectly clean. Breakfast is pretty decent with more than we need. Fresh bread, croissants everyday...and the food at the restaurant is incredible. Top service too, all that's on the menu is not to be missed. Monica was very helpful with the check-in late. And everyone else was nice with us. Long story short, the place to be...thanks for a nice vacation.

The hotel is very well situated in quiet village nearby the main roads and the lovely beach town of Calheta, and it has a big private car park. The rooms are spacious, with a beautiful ocean view and include a balcony and basic furniture. The annex restaurant also features a great vista and delicious traditional dishes served by an attentive and friendly staff.

Unfortunately, the rooms and corridors have very poor soundproofing, which meant we could hear our neighbours most of the time. Also, the swimming pool was only cleaned at the end of our 3 days long stay, so we did not use it. In our opinion, the lack of soundproofing prevents this otherwise exceptional budget hotel to score top marks.

The hotel is pleasant and in a great location. From the balcony you can see the ocean. This was our third time at this hotel this year and again we were delighted. The pool water was also warmer this year than in previous years. Swimming after walking all day was great. I highly recommend this hotel.

The fridge in the room is a little louder, but we never minded.

Location is fantastic with a great view and absolute scilence. Staff has been wonderful, very welcoming and warm. Room was spacious and very clean, bed sheets were changed every day which was bit surprising. Food in the restaurant was quite delicious.

Bathroom was a bit worn out, we missed amenities and cosmetics, and glass cups were not available at the rooms. Breakfast was too simple in my taste, but alright.

We came to Madeira (and stayed here) for six nights so we had a lot of time to explore the island and enjoy our stay. From the pictures, we already had big expectations but the hotel exceeded them all! The room is spacious, with a wonderful view of the pool, the sea and the sunset. Everything was extremely clean and the cleaning crew came every day to clean and tidy our room. Monica, at the front desk, was very kind and always ready to help. Furthermore, the restaurant is fantastic!!!! The food is spectacular and the staff is very attentive and always had good recommendations for us. We ate at several places on Madeira, but no restaurant could compare to the restaurant at our hotel so we kept coming back :) Having explored all parts of Madeira, I would definitely recommend staying on the south side of the island as it is the nicest and has the most amount of sun. With that said, the hotel is also on an ideal location for exploring all parts of island. We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Madeira. Even though hotel itself was amazing, the staff, especially Alex and Juan really made our stay at Engenho Velho special! They were always ready to help and we really enjoyed our small talks :)

Everything was amazing!

We had really nice ocean view from our room, which was very spacious and clean with enormous size bed. The breakfast was great and delicious with everything one could want. The restaurant we loved also, they have superb steaks and skewers. The latters have really cool presentations too... All in all a very good deal for your money!

How can you describe something so wonderful, the spacefull room with the great bed, the spacefull bathroom with the jacuzzi and rainshower. The balcony with the great ocean view. The restaurant with more then great food (in taste and in portions😀) but the best thing was the staff and personal! They really did everything to make your stay unforgetable!!!! Thank you!

If there is just 1 small…very small ..thing…it would have been great if there was some (instant) coffee and bathrobes in the room…
