Beautifully designed boutique hotel - room was comfortable, stylish, with additional thoughtful amenities included. The rooftop pool and bar area is also super chic and a really cool place to watch the sun set - the cocktails are excellent. Location is perfect - walking distance from other great spots in Stone Town, with a stunning view from the roof overlooking the whole town. Breakfast menu was varied and the best we'd had on our trip. Staff are incredibly friendly, helpful, and accommodating - a particular shout out to Benjamin who gave us such great recommendations and was just generally so warm and went out of his way to ensure we had a great stay. Don't miss out on the spa either - our massages were some of the best we've had!

The noise from the construction nearby, while unavoidable, is quite loud and extends into the evening/dinner time which impacted our otherwise lovely meal at the hotel restaurant. Water pressure and temperature varied quite a lot throughout our stay, and the wifi was hit and miss. But overall these were small issues and did not detract from our otherwise lovely stay!

The restaurant on the rooftop was simply amazing. Fresh food being cooked to order and the perfect portion size. The hotel is just 5 mins walk from the beach near stone town, so very easy to access (which is only by foot from the main road). Perfect hotel to stay at to complete the stone town walking tour and visit Prison Island.

I completely understand it is a boutique hotel and I absolutely love the place, but I would prefer having some sort of television in the room or better wifi connection as we were unable to even download videos.

The staff were fabulous, genuinely happy and helpful and made you feel welcome (and helped us organise brilliant tours). The hotel is nicely decorated and clean (beds are quite hard and short but typical of Zanzibar). Rooftop with pool is perfect and never too busy. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was one of the best in Zanzibar, highly recommend.

They didn’t have their whole drinks menu available. They were repairing neighbouring roofs, although interesting to watch!

The hotel is super central so you have stone town on your doorstep. The staff are so accommodating and friendly and also made sure I was safe as a solo female traveller. The rooms are clean, cosy and I felt very comfortable. The restaurant serves brilliant food and the rooftop bar is gorgeous too.

The soundproofing between rooms is a little less than expected but equally didn’t disturb me. It was mainly just through the door onto the corridor but there are only 4 rooms to each floor so isn’t a huge problem.

We paid extra for a room with a balcony, but no chairs are provided. What’s the point of a balcony if it can not be used.. we had to move the suitcase stand out there with our pillows, to sit outside. I did mention this to the staff so I hope they recommend this to management.

The boutique vibe of the hotel was great, views stunning, staff super helpful, especially Benjamin who was wonderful.

I think the hotel is better suited to a younger, trendier clientele. I was unable to use the pool as when we got back in the afternoons from daily activities, they were having their sunset sessions with no one allowed in the pool, then afterwards when I tried to swim they had already put in chemicals. This however is a minor complaint.

Very nice little hotel in the heart of stown town - few steps away from the waterfront, close to night food market, ATM, house of wonders, old fort etc. The rooftop bar with the pool is phenomenal, and we spent one day just chilling by the pool with the view over the ocean, port, and nearby houses - you can just chill, sip drinks and watch over the historical town and the ocean from the above - we went there both evenings we stayed there as well, as no other bar came close to the vibe. If you are reading this review and end up staying someplace else, still highly recommend to go to rooftop bar for a drink or two - it is open not only to guests.

The bathroom did not have the door (the layout changes from room to room, so its different in other rooms) - did not notice that when booking, it was not a big issue for us, just something to keep in mind if you are not used to that. But that seems to be the thing in Zanzibar, not unique for this hotel. The bathroom itself had an upscale feel, with rain shower AND bathtub.

The whole hotel is beautiful. Furniture, Decoration etc are all very tasteful. The terrace and the pool are a dream. The staff is very friendly and professional. The restaurant serves exceptionally good food.

Not much: if i had to say something, then that there are not enough places/hangers to dry towels and bathing suits. Also, the bar in front of the hotel was quite loud in the evening.

The moment we stepped into Upendo House we felt welcomed. There was a sense of calmness which was appreciated after a long period of work. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The manager, Krishna went out of his way to ensure we were comfortable and having a relaxing time. The food at the restaurant was 'out of this world!' It was hard to eat in other places due to it being so delicious. We were also able to experience a live performance by two wonderful musician's from Rwanda; Christiene and Tsakula. They were fantastic. So good that we went to see them play again at Upendo Beach Resort. I ended up booking two nights at Upendo Beach in their private pool villa. It was amazing. Every single detail down to perfection. I even had my butler Geoff, who was helpful and very relaxed. Serena, the manager at Upendo Beach was also very warm and helpful. We thank the teams at both Upendo House and Upendo Beach for a wonderful stay. I hope to go back to Zanzibar again in the near future and if I do, I will definitely be staying with Upendo again. Upendo House is a beautiful little gem in Stone Town. Rooms are not big but stylishly decorated and you have everything you need. You find a small pool with amazing views and a nice bar on the rooftop and there’s also a spa. Absolutely could choice to spend some nights in Stone Town.

Room could have been a bit more spacious for the price they have. Ask for balcony room in the corner, they are the best!
