Lovely, old hotel, great facilities although I never used them this time, beautiful surrounding breakfast was very good. Rooms were a very good size. The staff was very obliging

The mirror had what looked like spit on it when I arrived. They were quick to come and remove it, but the mirror was all smeared. I think they used detergent instead of window cleaner. There was a lot of dust on lamps, and pretty much all of the mirrors in the room needed a good clean. The sink looked like it was wiped down but not cleaned. When you go for dinner, they will not allow a tab. I had to buy a drink and pay for it, order my food and pay for it, go to the bar for another drink and pay for it... that surprised me, given how great everything else was. I guess too many people leave with our paying..

Beautiful location and building very relaxing environment

Only thing I can think of is the staff in the Restaurant never smiled and were quite stern it didn’t make us feel very welcome, also lack of coffee in the room I found myself always going to reception to ask for some more

The hotel is beautiful and has lots of beautiful features like stain glass windows and rooms to sit in and relax, it is high up on a hill and the landscape is beautiful, even with all the snow it was very magical. Our room was a standard double but it was warm, clean, and very comfortable, had no issues, I called for extra pillow, which was given to me straight away, even with the fire alarm going off (a false alarm) it was still a great stay, food was great breakfast and dinner and all staff were friendly and polite. Thank you for a great stay in a beautiful area. Would definitely stay at this hotel again.

The welcoming atmosphere & the staff. This hotel has original features, featured ceilings, stonework, leaded glass windows & in the old part of the hotel, the magnificent staircase which is gazed upon by ancestors old. To the extensive grounds there is a giant chess set, table & chairs, proper golf range. Pets are welcome inside. The Spa was great using Elemis products. We had back, neck & arm massages follwed with a facial, so relaxing. We then went into the clean pool & also used the jacizzi, steam & sauna. As snow was down outside and it was a barmy -6° the hotel remained warm. We asked & were given extra blankets for our beds.

Nothing.

I had wondered if this hotel, which I visited many years ago, would have gone downhill on changing hands. Not so. Cleanliness immaculate. The room (ordinary double) was big enough and the bed comfortable. You can choose how often you want it cleaned and request additional tea, etc. The staff were professional, friendly and helpful. One review had commented on slightly 'tired' decor but the overall impression and ambience are really nice and there are thoughtful touches, such as the sofas and lamps on landings, which is a boon if you suffer from insomnia, as I do, and don't want to disturb your room mate, or have to hang around waiting for companions. It's leisure club is also the best I've used - decent size pool without being too deep, hot tub, sauna, good air and water temperature, poolside hooks and benches for towels (which they provide), sun beds, all the facilities you could want in changing rooms, etc. We were also allowed to use it immediately after checkout. With hindsight we wished we had used the Grill on The Hill (hotel restaurant), as the prices weren't bad and the steak pie in the local Chef and Brewer left much to be desired!

One reviewer had commented on the lack of anywhere to hang a hand towel. The owners have not remedied this. The bathroom was 100% mould free but I guess the acrylic splash-backs don't make provision of hooks and rails easy. All the same, there are many storage solutions, which they could provide, not only for towels but to hang the clothes you take off. I also don't think that the lack of a bath mat is acceptable: stepping out onto a wet hand towel (which is what I was advised to do) is ridiculous!

We were given a ground floor room as requested. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast plentiful and good variety. Good to have hairdryer, iron & ironing board in the room, even though we didn’t use them! Sockets close to mirror for hairstyling. All staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Good to have free access to the swimming pool.

For 2 of our 3 nights there was no disabled parking available - spaces were taken by people not displaying blue badges. Fruit at breakfast always seemed to be in short supply. Mattress topper was creased in the middle, so made lumps. Quilt wasn’t shaken into the cover properly so lots of creases at the bottom. We remade the bed to make it more comfortable. We didn’t need our room serviced during our stay, but it would have been good to have the refreshments (coffee etc) restocked.

The property is lovely and spacious with excellent facilities. The pool, steam, sauna and gym are very good as hotels go. Room was clean and comfy. Breakfast was OK, bacon a bit dry (but I am being fussy!). Staff are very friendly.

Staff need some additional education regarding licensing; our son is sixteen and I ordered him a pint of beer to have with his meal and was told this wasn't allowed as the hotel didn't have a license for this. When I explained how it worked, the staff said she'd have to check and came back to say "they'll allow it on this occasion"; it's allowed under the law. Not a major issue though.

The setting, luxury, little extras and general ambience of the hotel were totally unexpected and much enjoyed! On arrival, the drive up to the hotel blew us away (even the taxi driver was impressed) and the reception area also very impressive. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. The little touches like the room refresh for those staying longer than one night, and the chilled water station really added to the experience. I made a cup of tea in my room one morning and realised I didn't have time to drink it, but take-out cups were provided with the tea and coffee making facilities! Perfect! We wished we'd booked longer than our 2 night stay as we could have done so much more, just being based at the hotel! I heard the walks in the grounds are lovely, not to mention potential Insta moments on the oversized deckchair and a fun game of giant chess! We made good use of the pool and it all came together to feel like a real holiday. We were so sad to leave and will be returning.

We have stayed here many times. It's a good hotel with gym, spa and golf facilities, although it's a bit hilly! Nice bar, restaurant. The massage I had was excellent! Lovely large room (usually we have had a smaller one, so we appreciated the upgrade). All staff are super nice and helpful.

It was a shame our meal on the first night was missed, then obviously cooked very quickly, which spoiled it a bit, although we received a complimentary drink, so staff did everything they could. Also, children seem to be allowed in all areas of pool, which can make it difficult to enjoy.

I stayed here last November and came on Sunday with my sister as I told her how wonderful it was.

The only problem we had was that our expelaire in room 104 was not working but we did report it, but it was a lovely bathroom. The bar on Sunday evening was very busy with golfers & overnight guests, where the hotel is so big with lots of lovely areas and couches to sit on. We were able to take our drinks out helped by staff, so it was easy to find a nice quiet area! We just loved the place, and recommend it to anybody and will certainly be back ourselves.
