The fact that this was a very well preserved and presented ancient building. The staff were professional, welcoming, friendly and helpful. The breakfast and lunch were excellent and very well served. We did not use the spa facilities, but these looked to be of a high standard.

Not much really. We found that the lighting in the bedrooms was too dim (to read my unlit kindle or a book in the bedroom was only just possible even with the lamp shade removed). Although it was not a problem for us, there were a lot of steps and no lift so for some this could be a problem and it might be best for someone with mobility difficulties to check with the hotel before booking.

From arrival until leaving every member of staff we came into contact with were all extremally helpful very friendly and seemed very well trained in whatever field they were working in. This we thought was excellent as we have been in a few hotels recently and the staff didn't have a clue. The breakfast was excellent as was the meal we had in the restaurant. We enjoyed the bar. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will visit again

The room was very nice but a little 'worn'. The bed head really needs replacing as did the the mattress. BUT we were very comfortable and it was very clean,

Loved the history of this hotel and all the paintings, furniture and the rooms within the hotel. Loved the xmas puddings hanging from the ceiling in the Cromwell Room. Pool and sauna/hot tub/ steam room were lovely and very clean. Staff especially in reception and housekeeping were friendly and made us feel welcome. Breakfast was very nice - we didn't have any other meals here.

Though breakfast was nice - we felt it was a little disorganised at times - things like having to ask for sugar/condiments in general rather than them be ready on your table. Really small issue.

Comfortable bed with extra pillows, beautiful setting, quality antique furniture, building well kept, open fires, well heated (winter stay), outdoor loungers, large shower, clean towels daily. Waiting staff was super helpful, polite and always available. A place for true relaxation. We also went out and there were cafes and restaurants within walking distance, a pond and beautiful nature. Grounds were well kept too. Free parking. Plenty of seating options. Afternoon tea (sandwiches/cream teas). At dinner, desserts were delicious. We tried apple crumble, sticky toffee pudding and warm brownie. Crockery was an absolute delight. The decorative plates and mugs went perfectly well with this 1600s property. Everything was so tasteful and well thought out. From the wall tapestries to the antique furniture and furnishings. I loved the amazing carved clock and the two huge stone eagles.

At dinner time, the starters and mains were not great. Bland and plain completely under seasoned. We used salt and pepper on both starter and main. Portions were small so not suitable for people with good appetite. My partner made up with the bread and focaccia offered although the focaccia was stale. The continental breakfast was great but they had an issue with the cookers so they could only offer eggs cooked one way each day. On the scrambled eggs day, eggs were watery.

Lovely food generally, most staff are friendly and efficient, and the spa and gym are great. Rooms generally comfortable, clean and good facilities.

Although the food is generally good, each time we stay here there's always one meat dish that's a bit tough which is weird as the rest is of a high standard. The main problem with the Spread Eagle is the reception that can't seem to cope with a request to move accommodation costs to one bill or change payment cards - and we're always treated as the problem. It also takes the payment before arrival, something that many hotels don't do. It's infuriating and whichever way we've booked, it never seems to solve the issue. Also, requests made through booking.com are ignored ie they acknowledge they've received a message but don't respond to request or act on it.

The room was very nice with a comfortable bed and well appointed shower room. The lavatory brush was an old metal design and was quite dirty. I did not find the information folder until I was ready to leave next morning as it was on the bottom shelf of the left side lamp table as you stand at the foot of the bed looking at it; I was on the right side so maybe it could be left laying on the bed so people notice it etc.

Only programmes on the TV selling things all night long. Have they been updated with Freeview! The window was open by some inches and proved impossible to close. The rod in the sink would not work to release water.

Pool was lovely, location fantastic and food great.

children are only allowed in the pool at 10:30 in the morning but check your is at 11 so that seemed unfair to use the pool and have a few mins to just change before checking out. I wish I was informed that the children’s meal was going to cost me £43 for steak and chips. The waiter told me if she wants something from the adult menu we could accommodate and my daughter said can I have steak and chips. I didn’t think to say how much will that cost so I was a bit shocked to see I was charged £43 for a ten year old steak but I should have asked.

so we loved the historic building, the staff are super friendly, the evening meals are excellent and our room was lovely with a very comfy bed and loads of hot water and lastly a massive parking lot.

a few negatives, which is a shame but I guess its why a 3 star not 4….. Main issue was overcrowded pool area, which was a shame, there arn’t many seats and only 3 loungers which people almost fight for ! If it were me I’d replace the upright seats with loungers giving around 10 loungers much better. Breakfast cooked food could be better, I would recommend cooking every order freshly and better local sausages. Some areas could do with updating such as the downstairs toilets and our bathroom in the old part of the hotel.

Beautiful building Nice, comfortable room Nice spa - good/sized pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi Some very helpful staff, especially lady on reception Great massage Great location in a lovely town

There weren’t enough beds around the pool for everyone using the facilities, which made it less relaxing than it should have been as you weren’t sure you would get a bed. For the money I think this was a shame. On occasion the service was slow - we waited half an hour for a drink to be brought to our room (but it was taken off the bill), and there was also a long wait for our starters at dinner and for breakfast. Think perhaps some of the staff were new.

Lovely cosy room with Nespresso machine, comfortable bed and excellent restaurant. We have stayed several times now, and the hotel has real character and charm. Not too far to drive down from north London for a short break. The evening meals were really delicious, but sadly some of the specials were already not available by the time we sat down to dinner. In the perfect situation for days out and beautiful countryside. We've never used the Spa, but am sure that would be an added bonus for many people.

Very good cooked breakfast, except the vegetarian sausage was a bit dry - I think there are better options available in the shops.
