The location and value for money

Getting a parking ticket despite filling in my car details at reception.

Quiet location, comfortable bed, good ventilation. So we slept like logs. Breakfast excellent, especially the host from Nepal, for whom our welfare was his watchword. He and the manager from South Africa could not have done more to make sure we were welcome, well fed, and happy. The location meant that we could easily go into the city by public bus but visit relatives by car, which was easy to arrive by, due to the hotel being on our home side of the city, and having a large accessible car park. A decent area with lovely church nearby to have coffee. New bathroom was lovely, clean and well thought out. The curtains were really decent full length and blackout. A big plus. Plenty of good lams and a decent tv and wifi service.

We tried dinner one night and felt it was of low quality, poor quantity and laisse fair service. What a contrast to breakfast. A real shame because the dining toom was enormous and there was a large audience wishing to eat in their own hotel, had the offering been better. The general decor in the room was dated and dull, with painting of walls clearly done by someone with inadequate training. Not enough storage or surfaces with which to keep our belongings, which were not vast in quantity. (ie. tiny rectangle of surface by the bed, one low cupboard and wardrobe, No hanging hooks anywhere, and only 6 hangers in the wardrobe).

Breakfast was the highlight, as it was previously at holiday inn. Incredibly professional staff, and everything we could wish for to eat.

We had come to York for a funeral and were very tired on both nights. We had hoped for a lie in on our last morning, but were awoken before 8am on a Sunday by the starting up of some sort of vehicle or machinery on the hotel car park near our window. This extremely loud noise lasted several minutes and we could not get back to sleep. Got home exhausted. It would have been better if we had driven home instead of staying the second night, which cost a great deal as it was a Saturday night.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and when the cot we requested wasn’t in the room the issue was rectified quickly and all staff were pleasant

We are in the restaurant both nights as we had young children with us. The first night was great, the second night we waited an hour and a half for food. We asked if they could hurry the children’s meals after we had been waiting for an hour, but during that time we had sat with empty glasses and increasingly irate children. The staff were huddled round the till area, there was absolutely no communication during this time about wait times or asking if we needed anything while we were waiting. While I appreciate the restaurant was full, and there were also lots of room service trays going out, some communication and service would have been appreciated.

We requested, and were given a ground floor room. All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Especially the young woman who booked us in, and most especially 'Joe' at the desk - and also his manager Thackeray. The breakfasts were the best that I have ever had in a hotel. They included everything, different fruit choices, about 5 different juice choices. Everything was easy to see and perfectly set out. Not one choice missing. The rooms were warm. The hotel is welcoming and comfortable.

The Bed! The mattress was comfortable. But the duvet was only the width of the bed, so that it was not wide enough to cover well both my husband and me (and we are both quite slim). It was also tucked in tightly at the foot so that it was impossible to pull it up. We had to get up to loosen it. My husband hardly slept on the first night. (He spent some time trying to sleep on two chairs!) We requested, and were given, with no quibbles, a second duvet on the second night, so that both my husband and I slept well on that night.

The hotel was great a little further out than we thought from the city center however £8 in a taxi was very reasonable the breakfast was excellent help yourself with a great selection and choice cereal , cold meats , pastries , bread and of course the traditional full breakfast , highly recommended , breakfast was included in the cost We also ordered food to our room the pizza was lovely as was the coleslaw and service was excellent Just to note this is a dog friendly hotel

The pillows were a little hard but to be fair we could have asked for softer pillows that was an option

The room was quiet and well appointed. There was adequate bright lighting including a central ceiling light which many hotels are eliminating. I still prefer carpeting which this hotel has, and I try not to stay in hotels that are using 'fake' wood floor covering rather than carpeting. Sufficient power points. Room was an adequate size for my needs. The climate control was easy to use and everything worked. Although the climate control would shut itself off as was evidenced by the red tally light going off the climate control would stop working and you would have to turn it on again. Too many hotels are deciding when you are allowed to heat or cool a room and either shut off the heat, or the air-conditioning, or both. A great thing about the shower is having the controls at the end opposite the shower head so you are not standing in the flow of the water while adjusting temperature and volume.

The bathroom is too small, even though I am not an overweight person. I don't like showers that are only half enclosed. You shower in a breeze and water gets on the floor. No safe or refrigerator. The light over the sink is mounted too far from the mirror and when you lean forward to shave, your face is in your own shadow.

It was handy and central for the things we wanted to do. The room was nice and we were both happy with comfort and cleanliness.

On arrival I was asked for the all the money for the stay up front, plus a £100 slate in case of extra expenses. The receptionist was not pleased when I asked for an explanation (During a previous hotel in Scotland I paid for everything at check out) I was told that “it’s in case YOU walk out without paying” I was tired after driving for hours, I felt like this was an unnecessarily complicated check in and that the young woman was not in the least bit welcoming.

Stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago. Everything was fine then, and we thought it was better than before. The room was clean and the beds were very good. The bathroom has a walk-in shower with easy shower controls to use, definitely a plus as you get older. We had a meal which was good and drinks at the bar. The prices were the same as cental York . Service was good and all the staff were friendly. We parked at the hotel, which has ample parking. You just need to log your vehicle registration at check-in. The bus stop is very close to the hotel and runs fairly regularly. Definitely would stay here again.

We have stayed here before so knew our way around, free onsite parking is a big bonus as York hotels can charge an expensive rate. 30 minute walk into city , it’s on a main bus route with plenty going by, we walked it each day to walk off the fantastic breakfast which was included in our stay, plenty of choice of hot and cold food. Room was large, huge blackout curtains and air conditioning

Bathroom tiny for size of room! You have to squeeze in to shut door! This hotel is used by workmen working near, each morning at 6.45 we were woken by some body knocking loudly on doors ! Didn’t happen on Saturday morning so could only think it was the workmen waking each other up! Annoyed on first day about it as knocking was very loud but couldn’t see anyone in corridor, but didn’t complain as it did help us get up and make the most of the day!
