This was the best place we stayed in over our 3 week trip to Japan, excluding doing a Walk Japan trip which was up North and stunning. Our room was extremely spacious, great toiletries. Loved having the Japanese tea and coffee in room. Another wonderful feature was the guest area on the 2nd floor where breakfast was served. We would go in every afternoon after we had returned from our sight seeing adventures and have a complementary drink and nibbles. Amazing little extra. Front of house staff were gorgeous, one of the best meals we had in Kyoto was a recommendation from a lovely young guy at the front desk, he even rang to sort an English menu for us, just so sweet.

Nothing, it was perfect

We booked the Japanese room for 3 people and it was really 😍 beautiful. The beds were very comfortable, and the room had a few power sockets near the beds, very convenient. The location is good. About 300m from Nishiki and near to our favorite halal ramen restaurant. Train station is within walking distance. There is no kitchenette in the room, but they have a laundry room behind the lobby.

There is no kitchenette, but it would be great if there was a microwave to reheat food we bought from the Nishiki Market. Limited unit of washer, need to queue sometimes. We liked the breakfast set (western), but we wished to have a traditional Japanese breakfast since we are in Kyoto.

Wonderful boutique hotel in a great location, central but off the main tourist craziness. Very large room and great large bathroom for Japanese standards. Sink was within the bathroom but still separate from shower and toilet, we appreciated this. There was also a large open wardrobe. Staff is usually friendly in Japan, but the General Kyoto people were particularly endearing and spoke exzellent English. We didn't mind the non-transparent windows, the room was still very bright. The breakfast is absolutely fine, we got it on the first morning and went out on the second day. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and cafes in the area.

Excellent value, comfy good sized rooms, great showers, amazing bath robes. Loved the free drinks and food after 5pm in the lounge, lux perk for the price!

A bit of a walk from some areas like Gion but not terrible. This can be good though. Some nice local cafes and restaurants away from overtouristed areas. The Shinkansen to Tokyo was cancelled all day when we checked out, it would have been nice if they shared this info on a board like another hotel we stayed at did. It was not well publicized and a surprise where we arrived at the station.

About 10 minutes walk away from the liveliness of Nishiki Market and only a couple of blocks to Exit 2 of Shijo Station, the highlight of this hotel is both the incredibly friendly staff and its 2nd floor lounge stocked with food from afternoon until 10pm by their catering. We made it a nightly tradition of our 11 day stay to drop by the lounge before bed for coffee, wine or juice, delicious mini ramen cups with soy based broth, mochi ice creams, and all sorts of other delights! The catering staff were exceptional, wonderfully friendly and cheerful, and always made us feel welcome and taken care of. Breakfast was 2000 yen per person extra but well worth it, we went a few times in our stay, with delectable local baked breads and two choices per morning of entree. We didn’t miss having a view from the frosted windows as the room was well lit, very modern and clean, and comfortable (note that in the 2nd floor lounge you can slide the frosted panels back for a second floor view of the street or a view of a pleasant rock garden patio with a plant). The only blemishes in the room were a few spots on the carpet by the table. The room itself was very spacious for Kyoto, and all of the amenities were provided, including little biscuits and a book of translations for the Japanese on the appliances. We really appreciated the care for details, and will miss our lovely accommodation for 11 days. The main road being only two blocks away there are also several convenience stores within a radius of two blocks (Family Mart, 7-11, Lawson’s) and we were able to keep our mini fridge stocked with onigiri and snacks for early mornings before day trips or late nights getting back. The coffee pods in room also became a nightly tradition as there were many rainy cold days during our trip and hot coffee or hot water from the kettle for cup noodles was very welcome. The bathroom was really nicely designed too, as was the room layout in general.

The one thing we struggled with was that there were only two laundry machines (washer/dryer in one) for the whole building, so we had to sacrifice one morning to get access to them when they weren’t in use. The clothes weren’t entirely dry so we had to return late at night after hanging them during the day in our hotel room to do another dry cycle. Another suggestion is if the rooms are renovated in the future, wood floors or a less fuzzy carpet might be easier to keep spotless. We always worried about accidentally dripping coffee or anything on the carpet, but this is a minor concern!

Staff are excellent, especially the staff in the breakfast room. Location is good for transport links off the main road of Kyoto and great dining options nearby (including Sushizen from the Michelin guide). Like most hotels in Japan, had a very high standard of cleanliness which is much appreciated.

We stayed in the traditional tatami room, which is physically gorgeous. My recommendation is to add a de-humidifier for this room, as it was incredibly humid during rainy time of visit (August 2024), to the point where our skin was sticky just from sitting in the room. It wasn’t as humid outside in the actual rain; I think this may be from the architecture of the sealed windows and then another layer of frosted windows for the tatami look. Also, while the hotel and bathroom overall were spotlessly clean, the carpet in this room could use a steam cleaning to get rid of many spots.

The room was spacious and the bathroom was top of the line. Lounge access was included in the stay, meaning free snacks from 12pm-10pm, however you could not take those out of the lounge. The location was also very central to the city, with a short walk to Dotonburi. The staff helped hold our luggage before check-in and after check-out.

The laundry machines were password locked and we were waiting 20+ minutes while a machine was finished washing but the owner did not return. The staff could not help us with this. Also, the cleaning was a bit inconsistent. One night the bed was not made, as well as some of our rubbish was not cleaned up even though we left it next to the bin. Our slippers also went missing so we needed to ask for a new pair.

A newish hotel that had a traditional facade to match many of the surrounding properties. A quiet location that was 10 minutes on foot from the busier area. The bedroom and bathroom were complimented by high end fittings and a fabulous speaker. To top it off, the nightie for sleeping in was amazingly comfortable and top quality cotton. There was a comfortable lounge for guests to help themselves to soft/hot drinks at times throughout the day. In the evening, you could have alcoholic drinks til 10pm. It’s a quiet hotel and everyone respected this when I was there. The reception staff spoke great English and were quick to respond to requests, they even called ahead to our next hotel with a dietary request.

Clear instructions for luggage transfer options could be left in the room.

We loved absolutely everything about this place. The staff were so kind and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was small but delicious and just what we needed to keep us going on a long morning of sightseeing. The lounge with drinks was a lovely touch (would suggest making tea and hot water available for all time slots - some of us don’t drink alcohol 😊). The location was perfect - some really lovely little restaurants locally but away from the hectic part of town; several bus stops and a metro station were nearby meaning nowhere was far away or hard to get to. We chose the deluxe twin room as I wanted windows with an outside view (rather than frosted glass) and this was an excellent choice. The room was sooooo comfortable and spacious and the bathroom was incredibly luxurious. We stayed 5 nights and I could have stayed another week. It was perfect. Thank you The General for a superb stay!!

Nothing, it was perfect.

The hotel is very charming and the location is super. The lounge is cozy and there is free beverages (beer, wine, snacks, cakes of the day). We loved our stay!

Our room didn’t have a window that could open and the glass was frosted so you could look out, but it didn’t matter that much. We would have loved if we could open the window, but the air was very good. - and lots of sun light. There is a construction going on just our side of our window and it starts in the morning around 8.30 am, but it didn’t bother us that much.
