Wakamiya-san, the owner, is a lovely guy who speaks excellent English and French, and will happily spend a disproportionate amount of his own time helping you plan out your trip not just in Takamatsu, but across the whole of Shikoku. The property itself is well kept, has all the necessary amenities, with some extra flourishes such as free barley tea on tap. The kitchen area also includes essentials like soy sauce and cooking oil so you can actually self cater. Space feels lived in rather than purpose built. As I continued my trip in shikoku, I kept bumping into other people who had stayed at WakabaYa, all of whom had only positive things to say about it.

If I were being hyper critical I would say that the mattress was a touch thinner than I was used to, but it didn't interfere with my sleep.

This was the only true hostel I stayed at while in Japan but the host was extremely nice, and also unusually good at English which made for some nice small talk. Gave me some nice travel tips and food recommendations. The room is nothing spectacular, I checked in relatively early so had a choice of which bunk to take. Facilities are all solid, there are clean showers and also some free tea/water. I spent very little time in the hostel itself in the end beyond sleeping but it was perfectly adequate and incredibly cheap too.

The only qualm I had was the location. It's not off the JR Station at Takamatsu, you need to take a local train line some distance to reach the hostel. Not a big issue at all considering how much of a steal this place is and I was aware of this when booking but just something to be aware of in case it matters to you.

Very cosy, clean place to stay with a wealth of information, facilities and friendly hosts. The owner has good command of english (a few other languages as well?). He is very friendly and more than happy to answer questions or give suggestions. The kids were too cute!

Not really any problems. Location and cost performance are good but not great. You make your own futon, as is common in many japanese style rooms.

Bicycles were for rent and they're in good condition. Host was nice and helped with trip planning by providing informative leaflets. Showers were extremely clean, and towels were provided. Everything was clean and in good condition.

It was a bit awkward to get up and down the stairs cuz they're kinda steep. The switch for the lights is out of reach from bed. Provided slippers weren't comfortable.

The host was very friendly and helpful with suggestions on what to do and where to eat. Very accommodating. The guesthouse was clean, quiet, calm, homey and comfortable. The tatami mats are comfortable and the room is a good size. We could happily have stayed longer and would highly recommend the place.

We had the best experience possible of checking in quite late after a long day and with a busy schedule ahead of us. Takeshi is very welcoming and in perfect English helped us out with our itinerary on visiting Naoshima & Teshima as well as providing tips for other must-see places in the area (as we were there to visit some architectural highlights), with some really cool less touristy options that are not often mentioned in other guidebooks. All in all a very relaxing experience even though we had a full itinerary during our travel through Japan!

Nothing at all.

Best guesthouse I’ve stayed in Japan! I was in Takamatsu for the Setouchi Trienniale, and Wakamiya san was so friendly and sincere, giving me lots of useful tips that can’t be found online and even suggested many ways I can maximise my time there. You can really tell that he is passionate in what he do, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. The rooms were also superbly clean and comfortable, and fresh towels were provided every day. Can’t recommend this guesthouse enough, and I’m looking forward to staying here again on my next trip to Takamatsu!

Our host made our stay one of the most memorable of our trip to Japan. He provided helpful details about the area, but it was personable conversations in the common area that made our stay very special.

We had no problems with our private room. It was exactly what we needed. It is important to know that this is a guest house with shared bathrooms and showers.

Wakabaya guest house was perfect! Close to restaurants and shops, super clean and comfortable. I was quite at the end of my journey around Shikoku by bike and Takeshi gave me lots of help and suggestions for better arrive at the airport. Look also at his suggestions and tips! I went to Busshozan Onsen and Ritsurin Garden and they were amazing! Thank you very much

Exceptionally friendly and helpful owner. When we arrived he asked what our plans were during our time on shikoku and gave excellent tips/maps to fit our itinerary. Clean accommodation with fridge/crockery and a nice communal space. Arrived late and he could recommend where to get dinner. Parking available.
