Check in was easy and friendly. The room is nice and good for a family to sleep in. Beds are comfortable. We had a shared bathroom and loo and it was fine.

Noisy neighbours talking loudly until late who had no idea of common courtesy and thin walls in an old Japanese Ryokan.

A well priced ryokan in a great location near ueno Park, and within 5 minutes of a metro. The rooms are traditional and comfortable, and it is a great base to explore Tokyo. The owner is the best - friendly, helpful, and just such a kind man.

It is no frills. It has all the necessities, but obviously it is not a luxury location. However, the bed is super comfy, the rooms are traditional and neat, and it really is just a wonderful place.

very quiet and super clean. room was super spacious and comfortable to stay in. staff were super friendly and helpful, they helped us to take care of our luggages before and after the check in and check out timings which really helped a lot. the room is super clean and the bed is comfortable as there is double layers for the futon, as compared to other ryokans we stayed in in japan. the toilet is clean and comfortable and the heater for the room is very good. although the walls are thin and you can hear sounds from your neighbours like footsteps, i think it is very acceptable for ryokans. it did not bother me too much. i would love to stay here again if i revisit tokyo. the neighbourhood is quiet and peaceful while still near enough to amenities. thank you so much!

Communication from the owners was clear and timely and they were very welcoming. We are a family of 4 with no Japanese and found them really friendly, especially to the kids. The Ryokan makes clever use of all available space - there was a communal fridge, washing machine and dryer and laundry sink. Our room easily accommodated the 4 of us and the thick futons were very comfortable. The towels were replaced every day and the bathroom cleaned. The location is excellent - walking distance to the metro and JR lines. There are many restaurants in easy walking distance. Mini marts are near the stations and there is also a little shop directly over the road. The ryokan had good curtains and was in a quite location, so we slept well. I would happily stay here again and recommend it.

The staff was amazingly sweet. Great English. They are good at explaining everything for you and plenty of info on what to do and restaurants to try. Water fountain on the first floor was great when you don’t have access to a sink close by to drink.

I thought I would have the true style of the sliding door as my room Wasn’t pictured but I was in a 1 room with the bathroom being up very narrow stairs. Like only half my foot fit. I’m sharing what looked like the only sink meant to wash dishes with brushing my teeth. So get the 1 bedroom knowing that. I highly recommend you get the rooms with its own bathroom less awkward.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is small and quiet. It encourages relaxation and reflection. I needed advice on how to get to the University of Tokyo and received good directions. My hosts left a bowl of delicious strawberries in my room one day.

The rooms are basic but comfortable. The staircase from the ground floor to the bedrooms is quite steep. I had to be careful, particularly when going back down. We communicated with more basic English than I am used to when travelling abroad.

The futons were extremely comfortable! I slept so well, I did not wake up once in the night and my partner and I had the best sleep we have ever had. I liked how the toilet was near by and that there was a little beep when someone entered the toilet so you knew that it was occupied.

The only thing was in the last two nights were heard a ticking in the middle of the night coming from our floor which we couldn’t work out why. But other than that the staff were extremely lovely and the best sleep ever!

The bedrooms were Japanese style and were clean and comfortable. The staff were accessible, accommodating and friendly. The quiet neighborhood location near Ueno Park and Ueno Station was great for both local attractions (zoo, museum) and getting around Tokyo easily. One of the best things was the free spring water bubbler and ice machine in the lobby -- a great convenience for guests.

We liked mostly everything. The decor was somewhat dated, and the doorways were just under 6' which was hard to remember in the middle of the night when using the shared toilet in the hallway.

The property is located in a clean, quiet neighborhood. Very close to Kaisei and Ueno stations with so much to see and do right around its location. The owner was so nice and accommodating. He greeted us when we came back in the evenings and was very responsive when we had questions. He even gave us a ride to the station on a rainy Monday when no taxis were in service. Really went above and beyond! Awesome experience to stay at a traditional style accommodation. Would like to return to Ueno as we did not get to enjoy everything in the area.

The Ryokan Katsutaro was our perfect base to explore Tokyo. It is conveniently located close to Ueno JR station from which to take the Yamanote line to Shinjuku and Tokyo. The Ueno park is also close by and every morning and evening we had an amazing walk surrounded by cherry trees. There are good options for dinner in the neighborhood. The owners are kind and very accomodating, though it is not easy to communicate in English with them. However, Google translate gets you everywhere. The shared toilet and shower are very clean and functional, everything is provided by the Ryokan as toothbrush, paste, soap, shampoo and slippers. The room is basic but comfortable, and it is spacious enough to fit two people for five days. There is a refrigerator and there is a lobby downstairs where we had breakfast. There is a washing machine and a dryer, it costs 300 yen to make a laundry.

Very little on the downside, but we can mention the noisy street and the little noise insulation of the rooms. The latter was not a big deal, but it may depend on the politeness of the guests. Ueno area is very calm at night, so make sure to be ok with that before booking.
