The whole place is really clean and well maintained. The bedrooms smell good and the bathroom downstairs is great and complete (shower, toilet, sink with mirror). The online communication with the host is excellent too! Also, Matosinhos is a great place to be! The town is cute, it offers several great traditional restaurants (much cheaper than the ones in Porto) and the bus or train to Porto takes only 35min, there are stations nearby, and they cost €1,80. The coast in Matosinhos is another highlight! We loved our stay!
The bathroom on the same floor as the bedrooms is horrible! The shower place is tiny, there’s no place to hang your towel/ clothes/ shampoo. It looks like it was meant to be only for men, but there is no sign or anything to let you know that there is another bathroom downstairs that is much better! Also, I’m under the impression that the place also rents beds for people to live there. There are two elderly men that are not travelers for sure! Besides this awkwardness, we didn’t have any problems during our stay.

Location was good, we love bed the wide beach and easy access into Porto. We parked in a multi storey nearby, please ensure you have cash, most parking here seems to be cash only. We had the family suite, which is two connecting rooms sharing a toilet and shower. Good kitchen and dining seating, it was very quiet when we were there, didn't use the lounge area. There is an outside space also.
There needs to be hook for your towel on the shower and toilet door, everything needs to be put on the floor... Not nice or practical. Not the hostels fault, but unfortunately someone must have forgotten the code to get back in or tried a middle of night check in. There are no staff on site, door bell was rung and door knocked from 3-4am onwards, so not a good sleep. It is strictly forbidden to let people in...

Very clean and good facilities. Everything you could want in a hostel. I came on a night where there was no attendant. But instructions were very clear and it was easy for me to get in and get my key. There was a place to wash clothes outside in the back which was fine but the drying rack was outside and my clothes did not dry. Everything else is very nicely appointed. A dining room, a living room, I well equipped kitchen.
The bathroom was coed and not really discreet. Thankfully no one came in while I was showering or dressing. But it's 2 showers that open to a small area not big enough to dress in. I ended up going into the bathroom stall for some privacy. Wish there was a place to dry your clothes inside as it was damp during the night and my clothes did not dry. In the center of town, so unfortunately there was a lot of noise on the street until after midnight.

The hostel was clean, and centrally located. I appreciated that the person working wrote on a printed map to direct me to a local restaurant and where the Camino continued. That restaurant had the best pilgrim meal of my entire Camino! We had a private 2 twin bed room that felt comfortable.
If you reserve the family room, there is fine print that the room you don’t take (connected by the private bathroom, locked to the other person) will be offered to another traveler. If you take the twin room, this means there is an opaque glass wall between the toilet and another guest’s room. It felt a bit vulnerable but still a solid choice for a Camino stay. I would stay again.

For an albergue, the facilities were all that could be expected. The bed was comfortable, the shower was good and there was a locker for valuables. It was also nice to be able to sit and chat on comfy communal sofas. The kitchen and dining facilities looked adequate, although I didn't use them myself.
Owing to the way the beds were arranged in the bunk room, my bed and the one above it were tucked away behind two other beds, with not much space to get into bed or sit on the edge of the bed to do anything.

October 2023
After I checked in on October 23, 2023 and looked around, I knew that I wanted to extend my stay beyond three nights, so I made another reservation for an additional two nights. My decision turned out to be a good one because this hostel is clean, organized and friendly. It turned out to be raining heavily during most of my stay, so I spent a lot of time in the hostel. The common areas were wonderful and I felt as if I was at home. The Fishtail Sea House is a short walk to two large grocery stores and many restaurants. The beach with its gorgeous sunsets are just a few blocks away. The 500 bus to Porto and the 120 bus to the airport are just down at the corner, less than a block away. Paula, along with Bruno, run the hostel. Paula is gracious and very competent. You just knew that if there was ever an issue that came up, Paula would take care of everything. That's a wonderful feeling when you're traveling alone. I enjoyed my stay immensely and plan to return here to stay on my next trip to Matasinhos!

The beds were excellent and offered a lot of privacy. The place was clean and quiet and the kitchen was great
The bathroom facilities could have be larger and offer more privacy. The facilites were shared (men and women) which is fine, however the showers stalls were very tiny, and the doors frosted glass. The one toilet was so close to the shower that both could not have the door open at the same time. It was not nice to be in having a shower while someone was sitting half a metre away doing their business in the toilet. It was impossible to get dressed in the shower stall without getting your clothes wet and if you stepped out you were in full view of everyone else.

Good location, exceptionally clean facilities, very comfortable bed.
As others have said, the shared rooms are almost comically small - six beds in a space with barely enough standing room for two people. The common areas and curtained beds partly make up for this, but the fact that there is so little space in the rooms makes for a less than totally comfortable experience. Definitely not for the claustrophobic. Shared bathrooms are similarly much too small for the number of guests, though the private bathroom off the kitchen is good to have and worth knowing about.

July 2024
I liked it because it’s a short walking distance to the beach. Cozy home. Great host.
I stayed in July and room air circulation was not great and no AC, had to open window that made it better but other roommates would close it 😄. Upper beds are climbing challenge as they are high and you need to be wearing shoes as steps would hurt my bare feet. There’re no shower heads holders in second floor and you’ll need to be holding it + water gathers at the bottom at the first 5 seconds you turn water on.

After I had booked, I was a bit concerned about the "hostel" part of the accommodation. However, there was nothing to be worried about, the part with the little studios ist separate from the hostel part of the house, we had our own little patio and everything in the studio one could need. I generally like Matosinhos, so also the area was very agreeable, would definitely stay at fishtail again.
nothing to complain about
