A gorgeous late 1800’s building that has been preserved well. It’s a true depiction of how the club has been run from the early days, however women are allowed in the front door now! I would have love to have seen it in its ‘hay day’. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, even lending my husband a jacket, tie and pants so we could dine in the main dining hall and mixed drinks room. We also had one of the best meals on our holiday here. All the produce (except meat) are grown on the grounds and were all beautifully fresh and well cooked. It wasn’t a cheap experience but we’re glad we had it, and was a great find for a last minute booking. Room was very good with a comfy bed and good bathroom. Room view was limited but the building itself more than made up for it.

The historic structure is a really special experience. Beautiful gardens.

Breakfast buffet with not much variety. Personnel did not provide much information about the structure facilities.

The Hill Club is steeped in colonial history and provided us with a special experience, from playing snooker on one of the full-size tables, to a formal dinner followed by a drink by the log fire all rounded off with hot water bottles at bed-time! The guide-books warn you that you will need to dress up for dinner, but that is not the full story. If you don't have the required jacket and tie, they will help you out. In any event, there is an "informal' bar and 'informal' restaurant with the same offerings and prices. I was very impressed with my set menu dinner, and my wife was happy with her vegetarian a la carte choice. There is a large lawn in front of the hotel surrounded by colourful, manicured, flower-beds. If you are staying at the hotel, the golf course just below is well-worth a visit as well. It was founded around the same time and has its own interesting history. We enjoyed a very good English breakfast there. It is only a 5 minute walk if you enter the grounds via the workshop entrance.

All good.

A truly authentic, colonial gentleman's club with a lot of original features. Very atmospheric. I much preferred it to the Grand Hotel, which is virtually next door. The grand may be grander, but lacks the Hill Club's authenticity and sense of history. Also the staff at the Hill Club are very good. Especially pleasant was the guided tour of the premises. Having to wear and jacket and tie for dinner was a pleasant eccentric touch: they provide the jacket and tie free of charge. The hot water bottle at night was a nice touch.

The facilities are dated, but for me that was the major attraction. I wanted authenticity and that's what I got. It was so much better than some standard, characterless international hotel.

Superlatives pour, as they must for this piece of living history, still a members club for well-heeled Colombo society, set in the lush wooded Highlands of Sri Lanka. For Brits the portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (Churchill props up the bar), borrowable ties and jackets for dinner in the formal dining room, billiard rooms, tea in the reading room browsing Whitakers Almanac from 1956, hot water bottles, sweeping views (and weather) indistinguishable from those from a country house in Shropshire, render the experience surreal. Dinner was a great spread, the Sri Lankan breakfast a must. Stacey provided a warm and professional greeting, ask too for Hasim's short tour of the public areas. All the staff were unfailingly courteous and helpful. Room number 3 was glorious, well appointed and maintained with a large bathroom, all looking over the estate's perfectly groomed parkland.

I loved everything, including the respect for old-school decorum. It was a pleasure to have silence all around for a change, instead of the usual humdrum of a hotel. Retaining all original architecture and components, the place had all modern facilities. The staff was very courteous and helpful. My favourite touch was the provision of hot water bottles in bed, which kept the chills away.

I had to keep signing in to the wifi a few times a day. That could be looked into.

A genuinely unique experience, as there are now very few of similar ex-colonial clubs like this - and even fewer where temporary membership is offered to enable non members to stay. We arrived here unexpectedly on Christmas Eve but were received as welcome guests. Without formal wear for dinner, I was loaned a jacket, tie and shoes with which to enjoy dinner. Nuwala Eliya is really no longer ‘Little England’ so The Hill Club is an unmissable experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food & drinks were lovely - and surprisingly reasonably priced!

Nothing!

Gazing afar from a foggy morning, hill club is like a beautiful myserious garden worth to explore, while inside it keeps the colonial traditions. It was my best choice for the whole trip to Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, you will have a guided tour by one of the oldest employee telling the stories and history of this legacy from the 1800's. It boasts a well-manicured front lawn, a billiards room, and a library adorned with leather-bound volumes, showcasing the interests and pastimes of previous members. And they have the best reception team ever! Hello to the gentlemen who just came back to hometown from the middle-east. I wish you the most prosperous future with The Hill Club. In addition, I lost my pair of wedges while rushing for checking out. I got them back in the second day! They sent them over through the bus that commute in between Nuwara Eliya and Colombo making sure I will get them before my international departure , which the mail system wont' work at all. Millions of thanks again!! I will definately go back and visit The Hill Club again. Best, Junjun

We chose to stay here for the historic feeling and because they had twin rooms. It's a lovely place. Wonderful breakfast. The beds were comfortable and the hot water bottle was cozy. Very good service and a special care from our room boy. Garden was beautiful!

We couldn't eat in the restaurant because we didn't have long pants. (men) But then again, that is part of the old world charm that they keep certain standards. We found plenty of places to eat in town so it wasn't really a problem.

Pros: Stunning location. Like a dream. We were allotted a chalet but there was an issue with the hot water supply, so they upgraded us to a suite. Again, very dreamy. The staff was super friendly, welcoming, and overall, super pleasant stay.

Cons- We waited for a tour of the property every time we requested it. Eventually, my husband gave up and didn't bother to wait. Everything was perfect otherwise, just this one thing made it a little bitter.
