The restaurant is outstanding with many interesting choices on the menu. Charming renovations have preserved the essential character of the place.

Some staff were pleasant but the rigidity of registration time was unusual as no other hotel insisted on their protocols. There was a sense that the client was privileged to be acknowledged rather than a welcoming and being made to feel special. Some staff here give the impression you are lucky to be in their presence!

I loved the interior decoration of the whole place. Very stylish and welcoming! The bedroom was spacious and cosy. The evening meal is a Suoer Food vegetarian salad was absolutely delicious and the waitresses were charming and accommodating!

Our bathroom door would not shut properly which seems to have been a known problem for quite a while in this establishment. Why was it not repaired before? The buffet breakfast was not really a buffet at all. We weren’t really allowed to help ourselves to what was on offer. I found this a bit offputting…..

The Black Horse is very laid back and stylish home from home, where we relaxed with a pint in the garden room at the end of our South Downs trail. The fresh milk is a nice touch and the rooms were comfortable and very fresh. We were pleasantly surprised by the good quality of the Nyetimber but English sparkling wine is still comparatively expensive to a cremant. We like this place so much we started the second half of our walk at Eastbourne so we could finish in Amberley again. Lovely food to celebrate and delightful staff. We will be back for a third time!

Breakfast starts a little too late/ service is a little slow if you’re a walker or catching an early train.

This was a lovely stay, was very impressed with the greeting we received, very thorough and more places should do it. The room we had was brilliant, lots of space, tastefully decorated and a very comfortable bed. The wi-fi and tv worked well as did the kettle and always nice to have water left in the room. Then bathroom was spacious and clean and everything worked. We also ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely, the superfood salad was a real highlight.

The breakfast room didn't seem to work very well, not very relaxing when it's a main thoroughfare for deliveries.

Location lovely. Food was very good and wine list good.

We really enjoyed our stay but when we had dinner there and breakfast we didn't get served any food until we'd been there an hour. This was specifically irritating at breakfast when they'd asked us to specify the time we'd like breakfast but didn't serve it until one hour later. An apology would have been appreciated but even when my friend paid for her breakfast & was asked how it had been, & replied " very slow service", she received no apology! This comes across as rather arrogant.

We had a beautiful one night stay at this accommodation - our room was both quaint and comfortable. We stayed during the British "heat wave", and our room had a fan which ensured we were able to keep cool during the night as our window opened onto the street. The restaurant was lovely and we especially enjoyed eating in the courtyard and seeing all the fairy lights come on in the evening. We had a lovely time walking around town and seeing all the thatched cottages, it was perfect for a quiet early morning walk. Breakfast was lovely and the waitress even made a special request Iced Chocolate with Oat Milk

The only downside was that the shower in our room leaked and made the bathroom floor wet. We could see the bathroom had been recently renovated and so it was a shame to see the potential for water damage from the shower not draining correctly and the consequential slight musty smell.

Great location was charming and clean

We called ahead about dinner service on Sunday and was told that the kitchen closed at four we said that we probably wouldn’t get there until after four and they advise that we should eat at someplace else However, when we got there, we found out that The kitchen was open till six. Unfortunately, we had already made other commitments for the dinner and could not back out of those commitments But we would’ve preferred to eat at the Blackhorse

We stayed overnight at The Black Horse while walking the South Downs Way and had a very comfortable stay. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Dinner was exceptional - my husband had a "proper" steak and ale pie, I chose a superfood salad with roast chicken - both very good.

Breakfast wasn't available until 9am, a little later than we would have liked with a long day's walk ahead. Unusually, breakfast wasn't included in the room rate and there were different pricing options for cooked or 'continental' choices. It did seem to cause a bit of confusion for guests coming down to eat in the morning.

The comfortable king size bed and very modern bathroom, the beautiful location and the food and drinks on offer. The beer garden where we were able to sit outside in the sunshine. The ability to have our luggage delivered ahead of our arrival. Fabulous toiletries from one of my favourite manufacturers.

The time that breakfast served was a little late at 9am. It was almost 10am before we could start our day.
