A true boutique hotel with 12 rooms in a central location with excellent service and efficiency. As soon as we arrived, the lady at the reception came to greet us and helped us with our luggage. She was extremely helpful and proactive in organising our plans for our stay (taxi to the airport, timings for breakfast, etc) and showed us to our room and explained everything. She even gave us a luggage scale to weigh our bags for our upcoming wizz air flight. The room itself had everything we needed and was immaculately clean and very quiet on the top floor. Very comfortable bed and an amazing marble shower with three different settings and a door that fully seals so you get a lovely steam effect. Soft towels and the most comfortable bathrobes and slippers. They had also put the radiators on in the bathroom before our arrival (knowing we're from Australia and not used to the cold), which was a kind touch. Lots of complimentary amenities, including individual toiletries and bottled spring water. We also had a skylight in our room, which was nice. The design and decor of the hotel was very tasteful and elegant. There was a lift/elevator too, which is not always a given in Italy. Breakfast was fantastic, and everything was of the highest quality, no pre-packaged supermarket pastries here! The crossiants were heavenly. Included with the cold cuts, pastries, fruits, yogurts, juices, etc. was barista coffee and a hot dish made by the chef. It was so beautifully plated. My only regret was that we had to leave for our flight so we couldn't fully enjoy it. Make sure you make time for breakfast! I don't think I could stay anywhere else in Bergamo after staying at Petronilla. It's worth the extra price compared to Best Western, Mercure, etc. The staff are highly trained and the hotel is very well run. Highly recommend.

I forgot to ask about the spa, so we didn't use it, so I can't comment there. You will need a taxi from the train station if you have luggage but it is worth it in my opinion to stay here and the location is great once you're there. Bbc or another English news channel would have been good. A kettle and teabags in the room also would have been good, but this could be an Aussie/UK thing. There was a bar downstairs.

Great location, clean, comfortable, friendly and professional staff, good breakfast presentation and options. This is a small boutique hotel in the center of Bergamo. While the rooms are spacious and appointed with great amenities, the overall property itself is much smaller than anticipated.

Check out time at 10AM is a bit earlier but we did not pay attention to that detail until it was time to hurry off after breakfast. Room is large and minimally furnished, personally we thought it lacked some details of warmth.

Fantastic reception from Utta who showed us to our room and how everything worked. Then helped us with how best to get around for the day. We arrived quite early and luckily our room was ready. We were very grateful. On returning in the evening we had another great welcome from Francesco. He ensured we could attend a fabulous local restaurant for an amazing steak and then helped us with our hiking/ exploring plans the next day. We both had poached eggs for breakfast and they were cooked perfectly. Plenty of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cheeses and ham and salmon. We had plenty to each and choose from My tea was even made like us Brits like it. Boiling water into the pot with the teabag already present.

Loved it all

If you are wondering where to visit in Italy, consider Bergamo! Nowadays the name sadly conjures up images of the worst of the Coronavirus crisis - yet in reality this makes it a safer place to visit, since immunity among the population is high, and all precautions are taken seriously here. Those who love Italy dream of finding an historic city, full of amazing buildings and stunning views, yet unspoiled by the coach-party and cruise-ship mass tourism that descends on all the better known places. Real Italy. Well, here it is. And if you stay in Bergamo you have to stay at the Petronilla! The location is ideal - down a quiet side street yet with so many shops, bars, and restaurants just around the corner. The funicular up to the old town is a ten minute stroll away, or you can skip the ride and ‘power walk’ up to the Citta Alta yourself in less than fifteen minutes. And don’t forget to visit the third city, behind and above even the Citta Alta, up yet another funicular. The hotel offers comfort and style, a warm welcome, a sumptuous breakfast courtesy of Elio - whose artistry can transform simple fruit or egg on a plate into creations you will want to admire as well as eat. The WiFi is good, parking is available (at some cost), and the hotel is very dog friendly. The beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms well equipped with very efficient showers. When you return to your room after a day’s sightseeing you’ll find your mineral water replenished and some tasty treat left for you when your room was being made up. Visitors who arrive unsure of how to get the best out of the city will find their travel plans quickly pulled into shape by the hotel’s super-efficient manager Uta, and when you get back in the afternoon friendly Francesco will be there to offer you a coffee, tea, or something stronger. As a home-from-home in this beautiful city, Petronilla really does deserve all of its positive reviews.

It’s beyond the control of the hotel, but the building works across the road and behind the hotel are unfortunate and hopefully will be finished soon. As a British traveller I’d wish for a kettle in the room, but it’s very rare to find a hotel in Italy where this is on offer.

Petronila is a perfectly located hotel in the center of the lower city of Bergamo. Everything was within walking distance. The staff were exceptional, making us feel very welcome right from the start, so friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and no stone was left unturned. They provided lots of help and guidance before we even left Ireland for our trip. Advice on dining out, tourism and a wonderful night at the Opera was readily at hand. On arrival this continued until we left for home. The rooms and hotel were spotless and very comfortable. Our room was a decent size, comfortable, clean and warm. Breakfast each morning was always a treat with a great choice to be had each day. Petronila is a unique find, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.

I liked everything, but most of all I liked the people! They were smart, helpful, and committed. The cleaning was outstanding! The breakfast had a variety of choices, and on top of that, you could also order custom-made omelets. The location is in the heart of Bergamo basso, making it convenient for everything. I wouldn't choose any other hotel for sure. Oh, and when you return, you just have to ring. It's like coming home.

Not the case.

Hotel Petronilla is boutique hotel perfection in Bergamo! Great comfort. Convenient location. Terrific breakfast. And the most gracious, helpful staff imaginable. Every point of contact, from advance correspondence with driving directions, to check-in, providing recommendations to enjoy charms of Bergamo, was as friendly as could be. Special shout-outs to Francesco and Rebecca.

THere's nothing not to like, except that experiences like this spoil us, and raise the bar as to expectations. This hotel should provide hospitality training to others!

Excellent service from each and every staff member, from the moment of our arrival, Enrico was gracious, thoughtful, and informative about parking, the room, the hotel, the town, and where to eat. He also got us last-minute dinner reservations just down the street at a delightful osteria - a last-minute RSVP on a rainy, Saturday night! The general areas and guest room were stylish, comfortable, and spacious. The all-marble bathroom was spotlessly clean and well-appointed with an excellent selection of beauty products, tissue, and towels. Enrico also showed us how to use the shutters, key card, and TV. Very elegant and efficient! The breakfast room, food, and service were also excellent, right down to the fresh passionfruit and homemade yogurt. We look forward to coming back to Bergamo and staying at this wonderful small hotel!

The only issue is that the hotel is not in the upper town of Bergamo, which is both a good and bad thing! I have nothing bad to say at all!

From checking in to the hotel and having our room available in advance Francesca could not have been more responsive to me and my friends staying at the hotel. We went out to friends in the area in the evening and needed to bring some bottles of wine with us as a gift and she even helped us with gift bags. On check out of the hotel each of us got a gift to take home of delicious treats from the region. I would most definitely stay at this hotel again if I visit the region and could recommend the friendly staff more.

When we had our room cleaned the cleaner left extra pillow cases on the bed which she must have forgotten but nothing else.

The hotel is located in the lower city with easy access to the nearby shopping streets. It is far from the upper city and do not count on getting to the funicular on foot. The easiest is to walk to the bus line 1 (schedule is pretty consistent). The hotel staff at the reception is very friendly and helpful - all out interactions with them were super nice. They helped us to change the room on the second night, arrange taxi, give tips about the city. Showers are great! Rooms are very clean. The hotel provides great slippers and bathrobes. Breakfast is good and with various options. Coffee is great. The hotel has parking (which was the main reason we stayed there).

Even though situated in the small side street, the sound from the street is very disturbing at night (on Fri and Sat night the youth were going crazy in the street until 3am and we could not sleep even with windows shut, so had to change room the next day). We found the mattress not as comfy we hoped (very very soft), but maybe others will be fine with it. I would prefer to be able to go to the breakfast in a bathrobe (one very unfriendly staff in the breakfast room turned us back to change the first morning). Also I would prefer to be able to individually control the aircon in the room.
