From the moment we stepped into the "Sassi" suite at Palazzo Degli Abati, it was clear that this was going to be an unforgettable experience. The suite itself exudes a romantic charm that is perfect for couples, with its spacious layout carved directly into the ancient rocks of Matera. The ambiance is beautifully complemented by a soothing bathroom, featuring a giant walk-in shower and a luxurious bath that beckons for relaxing moments together. Waking up and stepping out of the room, we were greeted by a breathtaking view that can only be described as the very best of Matera. The panoramic vistas from our suite-terrace were uniquely spectacular, making every moment feel like a postcard come to life. The terrace of the suite provided the perfect sanctuary for both morning delights and evening aperitifs. Enjoying breakfast while soaking in the serene views was an absolute joy, and sipping drinks in the evening amidst the ancient city’s glow was equally magical. A special note must be made about the wonderful staff at Palazzo Degli Abati. Cristina and her colleagues were exceptionally accommodating and attentive to all our needs. Their dedication shone brightly when we expressed a desire to have some photos taken to remember our trip. They went above and beyond to arrange an excellent photographer, Simone, who captured our moments beautifully. In conclusion, our stay at Palazzo Degli Abati was nothing short of spectacular. The suite, the views, the service, and the overall ambiance were all perfect. This is a must-visit place that offers a piece of heaven in Matera, ideal for those looking to indulge in a slice of romance and tranquility.

We loved, loved, loved our cave experience at Palazzo Degli Abati. It may have been a cave but it did not lack in luxury. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. The access to the room was from the terrace which was serviced by an elevator. This terrace was also where breakfast was served everyday and had an incredible view over Matera. Our hosts could not do enough for us and made our stay enjoyable and comfortable. The area has restricted vehicle access so parking is some distance away however the communication with the staff was excellent and they were able to arrange offsite parking and a transfer for us for a fee.

Nothing. Only that we couldn't stay longer.

This is by far the most unique hotel we’ve ever stayed in. It has been luxuriously renovated and with only eight rooms is very private. Our cave room used to be a bakery and they have preserved the old stone oven with a glass floor, it is simply stunning and you feel that you are living in history. The views of Old Matera are breathtaking from the terrace cafe where we had our breakfast each morning, only surpassed by the view at night! The reception staff Cristina and Gianfranco were friendly, welcoming and great communicators, and also recommended and booked restaurants for us. We can’t stress enough how beautiful this hotel is and we highly recommend it *****

The most amazing and unique experience staying in a cave suite that has so much history behind it. Our suite had the glass floor underneath our bed which showed some of the old original furnace. Incredible. All the amenities were exceptional and the staff amazing . Probably one of the best included breakfast and not to mention the bistro attached to suites with a terrace with the most magical views. It was also a fairly close walk to the main piazza areas. We just loved going for our daily “passeggiata”. Every day we discovered new things about Matera . The locals were amazing and friendly and also happy to talk and give recommendations about where to eat and what to do.. We will most definitely return to Matera and most definitely stay at Palazzo Degli Abati and request the same room. Loved it!!

Everything, but particularly the uniqueness and experience of staying in a cave hotel.

Beautiful hotel in one of the most spectacular locations in the town. Views from the hotel were stunning, especially from the restaurant/bar upstairs. The family running the place was so kind. I had a bad accident in Matera due to a fall and they went above and beyond to help us during the slightly challenging time - including personally picking us up late at night from the ER because taxi service was not available. A big thanks to Antonella and her mom for the hospitality and kindness.

We absolutely loved everything about this accommodation. We booked a suite which was spacious, modern and tastefully designed to fit with the historic cave dwelling. All the finishes are high quality. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom modern, stylish and immaculate. We loved the historic details such as the glass floor below the bed showing the excavation of the original owner's home, a baker whose oven and chimney were still to be seen. The staff were very friendly and gave us an excellent restaurant recommendation. The breakfast had a big variety and interesting local items. The terrace has the best view in Matera. We spent 3 nights there and easily could have stayed longer.

Steep stairs to reach the rooms with luggage, but that's normal in Matera.

Beautiful views and great location for visiting Matera. Room was spacious and had everything we needed. The staff were amazing and Christina was especially helpful in giving us recommendations and information about Matera

The bar/terrace was closed on Wednesday and also at times throughout the day when we wanted to either have a drink or some lunch. I would have thought that this would have been available more. Also for the price of the room, the soft drinks and snacks should really be complimentary rather than having to pay for these!

Amazing location, lovely staff, good breakfast, room was bigger than i expected with all the mod cons. Loved the terrace, million dollar views over the town. Bed and pillows were quite firm. Sofa bed was probably the best we've slept on. The hotel contact you before your stay to arrange parking just outside the town which is charged to your room, and then the shuttle drops you right at the door. Can't say enough nice things, highly recommend

there was a tea/coffee station but no milk provided. If we'd known we could have purchased some.

Amazing hotel in the old palazzo of the abbots. Each room is in fact a separate unit directky accesible from the terasse. Amazing view from the restaurant to the Sasso (probably one of the best views in the whole Matera). Ultra friendly and helpful staff. Good place to explore this amazing city. Many restaurants nearby. Recommended

Breakfast could have been a bit more varied. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get a cave room which would be an extra experience, but our normal room was also very good.

The hotel is located in a beautiful place, the view from the terrace is amazing. the service was great. both at the reception and in the restaurant extremely nice and helpful people. always smiling and willing to help. They also provided tips on places to visit and on any other matters. restaurant very good. very good breakfast. delicious coffee.

Unfortunately, it was very warm in the room despite the air conditioning. I am aware that it was not a traditional hotel.
