We paid inadvance for breakfast and dinner every day and it was all very good however a little bit repetitive. The service by all the wsitstaff was always excellent. We loved that we could walk across the road and start skiing every day. We had a japanese style room to sleep 5 even though there were only 2 of us (originally meant to be 3) and it was very roomy with a fantastic view of the ski slopes opposite us. The bath/onsen was very good and luckily on the same floor (3) as our room. The Teppa bar was on the ground floor and had a great choice of craft beer but the porter was our favourite. The bus stop was very handy about 100m up the road so we didn't have to carry our luggage very far when leaving. Ski hire was on the ground floor and excellent service. We saw snow monkeys on one day of our stay and there were dozens all around our building and across the road. Highly recommend staying here.
It's a shame that the Teppa bar wasn't open every day. The meals were a bit repetitive but the food was great.

The location was very good, being only a short walk from the ski slopes and also the stops for the buses to/from Nagano.. Breakfast was very good, with various Japanese and Western choices. Dinner was a very impressive, being a multi-course Japanese banquet each night. It was surprisingly palatable to Western tastes (and more than half the guests were Westerners). Our room with private toilet was clean, quiet and fairly spacious. Like many rooms at the hotel, it did not have a private shower or bath, so we used the (separate male and female) communal Japanese baths in the hotel. There was a large modern lounge/library/photo-gallery area with windows overlooking the slopes, with free tea and coffee as well as wines and local beers for purchase. There was also a pub/tavern on the ground floor. There's a ski/board hire shop on the ground which also does tuning/waxing where we got our skis waxed.
Although our room was good and the lounge looked recently refurbished, the common hallways etc were a little tired. One piece of advice we'd give to Westerners is to choose your room carefully as to whether it has a private toilet or bath, depending on your preferences.

Really beautiful and peaceful hotel in a prime location for skiing. Buffet breakfast every morning was well stocked and had a great range of options, my partner and I are both pescatarian and there was plenty of choice. Ski shop downstairs was extremely convenient and well-priced. Rooms were spacious, clean and comfy. Definitely recommend this stay and we'd love to return!
We would have loved to try the dinner offered however at the moment it is a set menu that doesn't cater to dietary requirements. We managed to find other places to eat nearby but would have loved to try the dinner on offer at the hotel as it looked quite special and would have been extremely convenient

Great location next to Ichinose ski resort. Ski to front door. Good breakfast. Ryokan room was very basic but futon was comfortable enough. Lighting in room was terrible with mix of missing or low watt bulbs. But one central good light made it tolerable. Baths were tidy every time I used them and reception self service areas were very well kept. The ski rental on entrance was fantastic making the ski in-out experience easy for everyone. The owners are present and have long history in area and speak English well. Nice photography throughout the chalet.
I reserved table for 1 for the traditional Japanese dinner but got sidetracked and missed my sitting. I got charged for the dinner anyway. That was unfortunate. It was my mistake Very noisy neighbours but they stopped be idiots around 10 pm.

Amazing location (ski in, ski out) and property was fantastic. Exceptional dinner service each night. We really enjoyed trying new foods each night. Room was very large with a separate tatami seating area and had a great view of the ski mountains. Very warm and cosy. Good services at the property including ski rental, ski lockers, free shuttle buses and guest laundry. Staff were great and really went out of their way to help you!
Beds were a little hard but this is common in Japan. Property is older as it was built for the Nagano Olympic Games. However the main guest areas have been recently renovated and really lovely. The rooms are very clean and there is everything that's needed for a fantastic ski holiday.

Great reception area for guests to relax with a beer or wine plus free coffee and tea. Buffet breakfast was fantastic with Jap and Aussie food on offer. Rooms clean, warm and comfortable, with monkeys outside our window on one afternoon. Jap style evening meal available here plus restaurants close by. Nice onsen on 3rd floor and Teppa room on ground level is a great little bar. Walk across the road and slide down to the first lift. Great location, great hotel.

Lobby and reception area super lovely area to have coffee and tea. Staff in dinner and breakfast room were very attentive and kind.
Was a surprise to have the shared bathrooms in the onsen but we actually really loved it in the end! Had quite a rude encounter with the man behind reception, asked for some advice and assistance on where to eat as wasn’t told the meal in the chalet is not vegetarian. Was very abrupt and wouldn’t help us or offer ideas for other places we could visit.

We had a wonderful week of skiing staying at Chalet Shiga. The hotel is located opposite Ichinose Diamond Ski resort, and just a short walk to the lifts at Ichinose. Both resorts are effectively in the middle of Shiga Kogen, so the location is perfect to explore the whole mountain resort. The staff at Chalet Shiga were incredible. They went above and beyond each day to make our stay special - chatting with us each day during the meal service, providing us personal toiletries when we forgot something, and helping out with broken snow equipment at the rental shop. We had breakfast and dinner included in our room, and both were delicious. The food was plentiful and hearty for a week of skiing, although I would have liked a bit more fresh fruit at breakfast, and a few more veggies at dinner, but that's my personal taste. What was served was beautifully presented and cooked - the kitchen team clearly take great pride in their food. There are limited food options in Ichinose, so recommend including dinner and breakfast in your stay. The beds in our room were comfortable (although firm like many other Japanese hotels), the room was spacious, and there were locker facilities (locks provided) in the entry for our skis / boards/ boots, so we didn't need to bring any wet gear up to the room each day and knew they were safely locked away downstairs. Our room had a bathroom and toilet too, which although small, was cleaned daily. They also have an espresso machine in the lobby, although no warm milk or hot chocolate.

Lovely place to stay in Shiga Kogen, with convenient access to the Diamond ski area ski lift across the road. Ski rental and lockers on the ground floor. Rooms are comfortable and the kaiseki dinner excellent. Restaurants are limited in Shiga Kogen and can be inexplicably closed. It's worth booking a room that includes dinner. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast is a bit repetitive and boring, but sufficient.

Chalet Shiga is a great place to stay in Ichinose. It's very close to the bus station, as well as the lifts from Ichinose family and Ichinose Diamond. It's almost ski in/ski out. We stayed 9 nights just after Christmas in a Japanese style room, with the shared Japanese style bath, 2 adults and 2 children. The diners there were great, however it is a bit repetitive towards the end of the stay if you are staying there for a while. Breakfasts were ok. They have a ski rental shop in the resort itself, with competitive pricing compared to what you find elsewhere. They also do have a self service laundry. The open space next to the reception and breakfast dinner restaurant is nicely decorated as well. We would definitely recommend the place and come back.
