The multi-story lobby, halls, elevators, and all the building facilities are lovely. There are three excellent baths, including a roof-top rotenburo, and the art distributed throughout the corridors is gorgeous. We found the ruins of the many hotels that closed in recent decades fascinating--very unusual town atmosphere.

This is an extremely large hotel, with very large and crowded buffets for breakfast and dinner. It is very well managed, but definitely not relaxing at meal-time. I was told there was no hotel bus to and from the station, so we took taxis. As we left I saw a schedule for the shuttle.

Our stay at Asaya went above my expectations. It was located in a quiet area of Nikko. Upon arrival, the staff was friendly and welcoming. They even spoke English which was very helpful since we did not speak Japanese. Our room was beautiful with a great view over the river where sometimes we saw monkeys. The beds were extremely comfortable and the onsen was heavenly! The meals (breakfast and dinner) were buffet style. It was nice seeing all of the other visitors in their attire provided by Asaya. The food was delicious and they offered cuisine from different regions - Japanese, Chinese, Western, etc. The Inn and hotel/customer service culture is very different from the United States and the staff at Asaya really made us feel welcome. If you are a foreigner like myself don't let that hold you back from staying at Asaya. Overall we were very pleased with our stay and hope to return on our next trip to Japan!

Perhaps if there was a more detailed set of directions to the Asaya Hotel. That being said, it could have been my human error that confused me when looking at directions. Perhaps a list of shuttle times from the closest available train station would be helpful as well. With that said, I have no complaints.

Hotel was lovely, rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The private onsen was wonderful! After a long day walking around, it was fabulous to soak in the onsen and relax. The dinner buffet was amazing! We were surprised as to amount and variety of food there was for dinner. Breakfast was not quite as great as dinner but it was still lots of food for us. Staff in general were very polite and tried to help as much as they could.

Although it was a beautiful location, it does take some time to get to Nikko for sight seeing. It was at times a little difficult to communicate with the reception staff. Their knowledge of English was very limited but its expected given we were so far into the country.

Both the dinner and the breakfast buffet were excellent, with a large variety of dishes being served, and always getting refilled. Smiling staff clearing away empty plates, and letting everyone know when the kitchen will be closing so that you don't miss anything. Multiple onsens on site, with both indoor and outdoor baths available. Everything was very clean. Staff went above and beyond when the wife forgot her phone charger in the room. Mailing it on to our next hotel in Osaka for us, we can't thank you enough.

Everything the hotel was able to control was wonderful. Everything was very clean and the buffet, as others have said, was exceptional. The spa facilities were fantastic and pristine. Language barrier wasn't an issue- we used translation apps when necessary but was not a big deal.

The location was really really odd. It was a boom town in the late 80s which seemed to expand without thought as to how it integrated with the beautiful surrounds. Since the crash of the early 90s, many hotels failed and have fallen into a state of disrepair. As a result, the view is terrible and a scar on what is otherwise a beautiful natural area. It's quite desolate actually. Highly recommend hiring a car to be able to travel to Nikko and surrounds easily. The side of the rooftop spas that I used (was allocated to women) had no baths under 41 degrees. This made it difficult with small children as the baths were too hot.

Staff was amazing. They really helped accomodate us even though we couldn't speak Japanese. They helped send our luggage And helped with bus reservation to the station. The room was very nice with a mountain and river view. We took the traditional Japanese room with futons, so we aren't expecting any extremely comfortable western beds. But it was still comfortable (however, this is more on the firm side). The bath in the room was great. I believe the water comes from the springs, but if it isn't, it was still very nice. The washroom had a mountain view as well. They gave guests an option to wear a kimono/yukata as part of the hotel experience, which is a nice touch. There is a good amount of food selection for the dinner and breakfast buffet, which is great for most people. One of us had shellfish allergies, which is why we chose this Ryokan. However, for those with severe allergies, you may need to discuss with staff as the food could cross-contaminate. There are a lot of amenities that we didn't get to try so we can't speak on it. The gift shop was nice and the hotel sells some of their baked goods there, which were great if you like red bean sweets. All in all, it was a great stay and would recommend to stay for more than one night to get a chance to use all the amenities.

This is really just a tiny nitpic and not really an issue. As we are from Canada, and this might be more because of a difference where we are coming from, but it is really hot under the blanket provided. We turned on the AC but we were still sweating when we woke up. But the room itself was cool. We can easily adjust this so this is not a real issue.

Buffet breakfast & dinner was AMAZING!!!! Having this included in the room cost meant that we didn't have to think about food options. Tatami room was spacious. The seating area and balcony were nice. Staff were friendly (very mininal English level though). Family onsen rooms that you can book in advance was nice. Rooftop Onsen was lovely.

The shops within the hotel are not open during the day. Massage services only available in the afternoon & evening. The view from our room looked over the river, as well as many run-down and abandoned buildings which wasn't ideal.

Our stay was exceptional thanks to the hotel team. We came to celebrate the birthday of one of our own, and the staff went out of their way to make it incredible. Special mention: when booking, we asked if it was possible to prepare a birthday cake. The hotel staff went out of their way to deliver a magnificent cake for our meal. Overall, the hotel's facilities are very pleasant, the rooms very clean and the staff very attentive. If we ever come back to Nikkō, we'll definitely stay at this hotel again! We can only recommend the hotel!

Step back to the 80’s. This wonderful hotel has a retro vibe with glass elevators overlooking an atrium. There’s a formal lounge area on the 3rd floor with seating spread out throughout the floors. Rooms are comfortable with average beds and pillows. In terms of comparison to Tokyo hotels, these rooms are on the bigger side and include a lounge area. The TV is not well positioned but who is looking at a screen when you come to somewhere like this. The win is the on roof onsen. Entry rotate sides so people can experience both sets of pools. Views are impressive. There is also an onsen on the lower level. This is indoor with a single big pool. Get in early if you want to try the message centre and associate facilities.
