Great location. Nice breakfast. The dinner was exceptionally good. The real dinner looked way better than those fotos online. I was afraid the critics online exaggerated with comments like“best food I have ever eaten in Japan”. I wouldn’t go that far but it was top league dining one wouldn’t expect in this kind of price range! Even the dishes - plates etc - were well chosen for every kind of food. We stayed for two nights and the second dinner had quite some variations to the first one, I would say I enjoyed it even more. A pleasant experience and definitely great value for the money!

This is an amazing little hotel. It is authentic Japanese without being stiff. We booked a room that would have slept 4-5 and it was spacious with an extra sitting area. The futons were cosy and it was really quiet. Food is fantastic. So is service. Drink prices are affordable and you have a really good souvenir shop in the hotel. The best things: it is just a stone‘ throw away from the UNESCO world heritage site. You are basically already there. And it comes with a really great onsen. We had it for ourselves miraculously. We got lifts from and wo the train station. And we felt very welcome. Would both book this hotel again without any doubt. Ps: Foto looks a bit gloomy but just picture it in sunlight. It’s great!!

Ok, I am addicted to coffee. Breakfast had „only“ tea.

Good location, near to the main attractions. Love the onsen in the hotel too, not too crowded. They can pick you up from the train station before 11am or after 3. But I couldn’t make it within the time, I am able to take bus from the train station to the hotel, not so far takes around 15-20 mins. The dinner is good, breakfast is nice too. Thanks to the staff send me to train station the day i leave, it’s heavy rain that day, thanks a lot really enjoy my stay.

We are not Japanese so not really use to sleep on tatami bed. There is a kid running around and you can hear it clearly.

This is a gem of a Ryokan. Think of it as a diamond in the rough. The decor is rustic albeit slightly dated. It is neat, tidy and clean. This is a very traditional inn. You have to take off your shoes at the entrance and they give you gowns (yakutas?) to wear around the premises. The staff are wonderful and very helpful. Though we have a language barrier.. they don't speak much English, with the help of Google Translate we were able to communicate. The inn has an attached onsen that guests can use. The usual onsen rules apply. As we were visiting during the off season.. there were not many guests. Many times I was the only chap in the pool. There is no time limit to the soaking. They also serve traditional breakfasts and dinners which costs extra above the room rate. About Y3300 per person for dinner and Y1200 for breakfast. It's actually quite worthwhile to have dinner because it's a real experience. Also there isn't many dining places in Nikko. Location-wise, Nikko Tokanso is about 5 mins easy walk to the World Heritage Nikko Temple District. It's a great base for your discovery of the Nikko area. It is a bit far from the station. I wouldn't recommend walking. There's a bus but we rented a car so we can go further away. Driving in rural Japan is stress-free. Most local roads have va 40/50 km/h limit and there is hardly any traffic. Besides the cars are so efficient. Highly recommend this as a place to stay

The staff was very gentle and helpful. The dinner was very complete (it had different small dishes in plates or bowls). The waiter knew english so she explained me how to prepare some of the meals (some of those small dishes needs to be prepared when you are eating). Also, although the bath was shared (public bath), the room had a private toilet, which I really appreciated (I do not know if all rooms have a private toilet). Also, they accept tattoos in the bath (after 21:00) which is friendly for my standards. They have green tea inside the room and also in the ryokan hall they have free coffee.

The too few wall plugs for electronic devices. I found only two in my room, so I had to unplug some of the room devices. However, in my case was not that much an issue because I was alone.

having an on-site onsen and rotenburo was the best. the room was a good size with a quiet, private veranda. meals were very filling and tasty, and the staff were very kind and friendly. has a good location near shinkyo bridge, and is about 10m walk from the nearest bus stop (which is the end of main street) and 10m away from lawson and very close to the toshugu shrine area. but if you're at nikko you're probably expecting to walk. thoroughly enjoyed my stay!

a bit more flexibility in mealtimes, but i do understand why they had fixed timings.

The dinners and breakfasts are huge - something to enjoy for everyone even if you aren't keen on every traditional morsel. The baths are great, open all afternoon and evening. Traditional futons were perfectly comfortable. The staff are very attentive and helpful; they even have a hot-air-blower to dry your shoes for you when you return from a rainy walk. And you're only a couple of minutes' walk from Toshogu.

The futons are only laid out for you the first day; after that you have to tidy them away and put them back out yourself. Noise in corridors or neighbouring rooms will be heard.

This is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed at. The setting and location is absolutely gorgeous, and the room and accommodations were very comfortable. I cannot more strongly recommend the course meals; I ordered the dinner and breakfast and both may have been some of the best food I've eaten in my entire life. I also experienced an onsen, or hot springs, here for the very first time and it was wonderful. This is a beautiful, very attractive hotel and the staff were very helpful and professional.

The Onsen (they allowed a guest with “tattoo” to use their beautiful hot bath during night time hours), affordable for solo traveller and the place surrounded by trees and near at Unesco national park. At first locating the Ryokan Inn for the first time at night might looked daunting specially if you’re a solo traveller. Check-in while it’s still daytime as it looks scary because it was surrounded by beautiful tall trees and old Tera and you will passed by on the magnificent “Shinkyo Bridge”. Upon entering you will be greeted by hospitable lovely attendants and will help you a lot if you will ask more questions (be prepared to have your own google translate app, although they will use their own translator app) During my stay-in at the Ryokan they given me a voucher worth 6,000yen (as far as I remember) I can use to buy souvenirs and foods along selected nikko’s local stores (I do always ask to every shop I’ve been). The room was big for a solo traveller like me, it can fit a 3-4 persons with a private bathroom but no shower room (you have to use the public bath). They have free drip coffee for guest at the lounge area, drinks (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) and instant noodles vending machine, and they also have section at lounge where you can buy souvenirs or have a seat and read some Japanese newspaper or magazine. One more thing as well, they have this next door restaurant (a meiji-style building) which you can have western drinks.

The only thing I don’t like was the private bathroom, you will have this unpleasant bathroom smell while using it. Although you don’t have to bother while you’re sleeping because there was a partition between private bathroom and your main sleeping room.

The employees were very friendly, the room was very nice, and the onsen was a great experience. We had an authentical an traditional japanese experience. We had traditional dinner and breakfast. My husband is allergic to fish and shellfish, and they adapted the menu for all meals very well, without losing the traditional essence. I am very grateful for their attention, and especially for their care with the food.
