I specifically picked Tabino for its location that's a bit on the outskirts of Takayama downtown where things are even more laid back. It's situated where the hills start as sort of an entryway towards the mountainous regions. We didn't drive but it will have been ideal if we did since there seem to be some scenic ways to explore not very far around. Hiked a couple nice hills nearby that led to some shrines on some somewhat steep unmaintained trails. The walk to town is nice as well but Tabino also would shuttle to and from town for free on a schedule, and there are also public bus lines. I'd suggest to rent their bikes which we never had time to do. It's a lovely place to stay and will do so again.

What's not to like? Family Mart right on front for budget snacks that are quite tasty. Walking distance to nature. Friendly staff.

After a long Journey, I loved the fact I could sit in the onsen and relax watching the river and snow fall. Room was comfortable and staff attentive

It is some distance from the train station and city centre, but they have a free shuttle bus that goes into the city and back from the city. Unfortunately there was a group staying at the hotel which took up all the seats into the city. Not sure why they couldn't use their own coach that was parked in the driveway?, So we took the local bus, an easy ride.

The staff was super helpful and kind, they made sure we were welcomed properly on our honeymoon and we were so happy about that! The buffet had so many different options, being vegetarian I was afraid of not being able to eat most of the foods, but they had several veggie dishes that changed every day! The onsen is very nice and relaxing! They have a free shuttle that takes you to the center of Takayama which is super convenient.

Nothing to mention, we were super happy with our stay!

Lovely hotel with a great onsen on site, be aware they do not allow people with tattoos to use the onsen. They provide sleepers and pyjamas in the bedroom as well as some nice amenities. The staff was friendly. The Wi-Fi connection worked well. The bedroom was small but comfortable and well-clean. The outside onsen was a highlight, great to soak in hot water in the cold. The hotel is far from town, you will need to take the shuttle or get a taxi from the station.

We arrived late at night and there was no shuttle or other available transportation and we had to wait 30min for a taxi to show up at the train station. it would be nice if the shuttle bus had more times available, only a few are provided but it's great to have it for free. Also, the staff gave us contradictory information, one told us to book the dinner in advance, and the other said "You just have to show up there" Then on the day they said everything was full because we didn't book in advance.

There were many unique thoughtful touches with the hotel - free ramen or ice cream from 2000H - 2200H, free shuttle service to the city, free coffee in the morning, free traditional Japanese attire to try.

There were no restaurants around the area. You must take the free shuttle to the main station where the restaurants are - but they close early at 1900H. Family Mart across the street is the saviour.

Rooms are consider sizeable. In-house onsen is available and it's pretty clean too. Separate washing machine and dryer available as well. Best part there are sufficient parking available on site. Staffs are helpful and friendly. Beautiful place too. Value for money. However, this hotel is still about 20 mins away from Takayama town. Easy to locate with Google Maps or Maps on iOS. Anyway hotel does provide shuttle service between hotel and Takayama town at regular schedule, which can be checked at the reception.

Nothing much not to like!

It’s a bit far away from the Takayama city centre but there is shuttle bus every hour between Takayama station and hotel. The service is quite good and I would like to share two experiences in my stay: 1. I took JR to Takayama but the train was expected to arrive at 20.51 which I would have just missed the last shuttle bus scheduled to depart at 20.50. I therefore called the hotel to see if the last shuttle can wait for me. They eventually arranged a private care just for me which surprised me. 2. They have a satellite office opposite to just Takayama station for customer to have luggage storage. My check out day was the off date of satellite office and they arranged shuttle bus to drive my luggage to Takayama station at agreed time. At the end, I didn’t “suffer” much from the far location and enjoyed luggage storage. The fee is much cheaper than those in centre and you can enjoy indoor and outdoor onsen in the hotel!

You need to arrange your time well to catch the shuttle bus as it’s once per hour.

An all-around pleasant stay. We overlooked the river so it was quiet except for the sound of rushing water. I was concerned about the distance from town but we rented their electric bicycle (only 500 yen for half a day) or took the hourly shuttle. We rode the bikes in the countryside and got to see a side of Japan that train travelers don't have access to. There is a convenience store across the street.

The AC kept turning off at night and there were no instructions in English. The bicycles need some maintenance (chain lubrication, new tires).

Loved the place! Yes all the reviews about the room being small are true, and I think they made that quite clear in the pictures displayed so you know what you are getting. The room is small (and abit dated) but it's clean and has everything I needed. For a short stay, I was ok with the room size. The best part about the hotel is the facilities. The outdoor onsen looks out to a small stream to the back of the hotel, with cold green tea outside to cool you off after a good soak, The service staff were all polite and attentive, free shuttle bus to and from Takayama town, free use of the dining hall (including microwave) after breakfast hours and there was even a discount voucher for the nearby petrol kiosk! I had a good stay and thought it was really value for money. Oh and there is also a big Family Mart across the road (1min walk) in case you needed additional supplies. Overall very satisfied and I will definitely return for a short stay if I am back in the area!

Nice Hotel with small onsen with open bath, it was located in a peaceful rural area just out of Takayama. The hotel has a shuttle service with a cozy waiting room just out of Takayama Station, so the distance was not an issue (and it is also true that you can reach Takayama from the hotel walking for less than half an hour). Be sure to do a little walk in the surrounding area to find the little shrine under the waterfall.

I know that it is to defend the privacy of the guests, but the fence around the open bath ruined the experience a little.
