I want to give a fair review so… The hotel is amazing, the staff welcoming and happy to help. The food was good and the rooms, shared lounges and dining areas immaculate. HOWEVER, be careful when booking your room. The website suggests that both classic and deluxe rooms ‘..have great views of our grounds’ and this is most definitely not the case. Our room was in an annexe away from the main house and only reached by walking through an outdoor courtyard. (At no point was this mentioned prior to arrival or anywhere on the website). The view was of the car park and service area, not of the beautiful grounds. Additionally the hotel sits in its grounds in a dip just off the busy A142 road - this road can be heard from our room 24/7 and from wherever you are when in the grounds - not at all ‘tranquil and peaceful’. A real shame for what otherwise was a great stay. Read less
Road noise both in the room and outside in the grounds. The room needed a fridge - the kitchen happily provided a jug of oat milk for the room but I had no way of keeping it cool. Also as there is no room service we had our own snacks in the room which would have benefitted from refrigeration. I was surprised to see children running around the bar area on Sunday afternoon in what is listed as an ‘adults only’ hotel. The dining area is open to the public and so I guess the adults only does not extend to the restaurant area.

From the moment I parked, I knew this hotel would be something truly special. The sheer elegance of the building left me speechless; it exudes history and sophistication with every detail. The style and décor were impeccably designed to reflect the property's period, with vibrant colors and tasteful touches that showcase an incredible understanding of mixing comfort, elegance, and charm. The room was absolutely sublime—every detail had been carefully thought out. From the phenomenally comfortable bed to the luxurious White Company shower gel in the bathroom, it was clear that immense care and attention had been given to create a truly exceptional experience. The coffee machine, the thoughtful layout, and the little finishing touches set this hotel apart from corporate chains. The welcome upon arrival was warm and inviting, yet the atmosphere remained beautifully private and tranquil throughout my stay. It felt like home, but with an extra layer of sophistication and style. Words genuinely fail to capture how much I enjoyed my stay here. Every element was designed with thought and care, making it an unforgettable experience.

My wife and I had an excellent 2 night break here to visit Ely and Cambridge. The hotel had a suitably old world charm as would be expected of its age but with modern touches that kept it from being "twee". Lots of comfortable seating areas by roaring log fires. The bedroom was comfortable and spacious and the en-suite was huge (not the usual cupboard converted to a shower one often finds). No lack of heating in the room, you will not go cold! The restaurant served good quality food (booking essential) and an excellent breakfast in the morning. The highest praise goes to the staff who were amazing. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. None of the false smiles, people genuinely interested in the conversations they had with you. It truly is a friendly, family owned and run hotel. Thoroughly recommended.
There was really nothing which stood out for criticism.

November 2024
We stayed in November, during the off-season, only about three to four rooms were reserved, making the place exceptionally quiet. Antonina greeted us warmly when we arrived. We were delighted with our beautiful, well-lit room; however, the heater was turned off, so it took a little time to warm up. The grounds were stunning, and the location was convenient, being close to Ely. There were many cozy areas where we could sit to read, chat, or play cards. The bathroom was spacious, featuring a large tub and shower. The bed was very comfortable and came with plenty of pillows to choose from. Overall, the atmosphere was very peaceful.
Dinner options were limited, and we could order a cheese, meat, or vegetable board, none of which we found particularly tasty. For breakfast, I expected more variety for the $20 price, even though they do offer a hot entree menu. We ended up leaving to find something more satisfying to eat.

I was upgraded to a larger room than I'd booked (lovely surprise!) which had a balcony and stunning views over the grounds and back towards the cathedral. The room was pristine with an added bonus of a capsule coffee machine (which also dispensed hot water for tea). The bathroom was large and the shower was decent (it leaked a little but the pressure was pretty good). The room did get a little warm overnight but an electric fan was in the room which did the trick. There was plenty of parking and the location wasn't bad for driving into Cambridge (about 30 minutes in morning rush hour).

The Old Hall is an ideal stopping point for those travelling by road from the Eurotunnel depot in Folkestone to the North. We received a warm welcome and were shown to an outstanding ground floor room with all facilities. The Old Hall has a strong focus as a wedding and event venue, so an a la carte menu was not available for dinner, but the meals provided were of high quality and thoughtfully served. The Old Hall has a real family-run atmosphere and is good value for money.
We had no complaints at all with facilities, service or welcome.

The staff was lovely, the location is beautiful, the building looks fantastic and feels homely and cosy. It was immaculately clean. We were upgraded to a lovely room with a bath, for free. There is a coffee machine in the room, and a selection of teas and coffees. The breakfast was really nice too, despite having limited buffet options. The menu was varied and the food was really good. We would definitely strongly recommend it.
There was quite a lot of light in the morning, in the room, despite having closed the blinds. The signalling inside the hotel looks a bit dated and cheap. It would be an easy fix and it would look glorious. The food in the restaurant (for dinner) was okay, we did not find it brilliant, and we found a bit weird that the food was served with white gloves.

We had a charming room on the top floor in the older part of the building. The room was very clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable and inviting. The bathroom was large and the rain type shower invigorating. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was outstanding. And, although we were just passing through on our travels, we would definitely stay here again.
The only thing we didn't like is that all of the pillows provided on the bed were too thick and firm for our liking.

Fantastic tastefully renovated period building, great views towards Ely, well maintained impressive grounds, large bedroom nicely furnished. Overall luxury feel to the whole property. Good food well presented both breakfast and diner.
Although very impressive bedroom suite, the TV was not very big so could not see it very clearly with-out moving the chairs closer, the blinds are not wide enough to cover the windows and breakfast finishes promptly at 9am, I appreciate as explained they need to prepare for Sunday lunch, but other hotels are able to offer later weekend breakfast that also offer Sunday lunch. We are not people who are late up, but felt not fully relaxed to make sure we are comfortably with-in the time allocated, shame as it is a lovely hotel.

The hotel is well presented, with immaculate grounds, ample parking (albeit a little walk from reception), great rooms, and a lovely layout on the ground floor with multiple 'snugs' where you can site in peace and quiet.
The cooked breakfast is a little stingy for the price, but you can fill up on pastries and toast if needed. They use Nespresso coffee machines in the dining room, not something I like, but you can ask for pots of tea if you prefer.
