I'll start with the two disadvantages of staying here - the distance from the city and the late hour (21:30) for dinner. If you don't mind that, you will likely be as happy with this property as I, espcially if you prefer unique properties over the standard hotel. It is composed of two buildings: the main house and the rooms (which are separate from the main house). In the main house is a bar and a common area which was inviting and well furnished. And though I listed it as a disadvantage, you might acually be happy with the location. It is a 20-minute drive to town, but that means it is not in the town! That means you can enjoy the beautiful countryside, the absence of crowds and noise, and the serentiy that this property offers. Also, though the dinner was late, it was the best meal I had in my 16-day travel to Portugal and Spain. In fact, it was the most tasty meal I've had in a year probably. (Note: you will need to let management know before 16:00 if you will be attending. One other note: it is easy to miss the turn off the road. Communicate with management about this turn before you trust your navigation.) I loved the Casa Grande and would choose it again if I were to return to Santiago.

I would have enjoyed an earlier dinner hour.

Absolutely loved the location and the tranquility. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. The hosts went above and beyond. The evening meals were brilliant quality. The swimming pool was a fresh added bonus. This place is a gem!

Honestly, nothing to complain about - loved everything.

Everything! The location was stunning, the building was impressive and the food was wonderful. By far the best place we stayed in during our road trip. We also loved the fact that the menu was straightforward - either meat or fish on alternate nights, beautifully cooked and presented. No fuss, eat what you're given and wash it down with the excellent wine. As it should be. We overheard a guest being fussy about the food and complaining that the property was difficult to find. Utter nonsense - please find somewhere else to stay! The food was excellent and the property was simple to find - pop the place in Google and up it comes - it's not difficult!

Nothing.

The hotel is a delight, set among surrounding hills the views are stunning. It is along a lane through the forest giving it a quiet peaceful location to relax in. The property is old set across a range of buildings and decorated with an eclectic mix of period furniture and pictures etc. Very comfortable and clean. Our room and bathroom in the annex was huge. The staff were lovely. The food is great . Super breakfast. You must have dinner at least once, it’s a set meal same for all guests, but really top quality and presentation . Easy to get into Santiago and further afield.

I’m being picky now but despite there being a huge wardrobe in our room, 3/4 of this was locked leaving only a small set of shelves to put clothes on and no hanging. If the wardrobe is decoration only then a rail could be provided (there was room!!)

stunning location surrounded by forrest and fields ( inc.local cattle). Wow factor when you walk through the main buildings due to the unique decor and general ambience. Authentic - renovated 18C Monastery. Staff extremely professional and helpful. Owners made it their business to make you feel welcome, including their 2 friendly family doggies. each corner you turn you see something different - would love to visit in the colder months. There is a room to play pool/ bar games which also has a well stocked bar ( honesty basis - prices very cheap). Free coffee/ tea available in lounge area all morning. swimming pool was down a small track with exceptional views and very quiet, with loungers and seating areas. Ample gardens and grass for dogs to run around. Generally good Wifi, basic toiletries, comfy beds and quiet at night - no mini fridge. We received an e-mail earlier in the day asking if we wanted to book Dinner ( had to respond before 4pm) but no menu - previous reviews had said they alternate meat and fish over two-days. we booked not knowing what to expect - it didn’t disappoint. Fish starter, meat main course and beautiful dessert and wine. Fabulous quality in a beautiful dining room ( breakfast also served in same room and also exceptional quality). Highly recommend B/F and Dinner although the main course was not served until 10.30pm. Car essential to get to Santiago de Compostela ( 20 mins drive).

just the small point of a very late evening meal

We spent two nights In Santiago de Compostela during our mini road trip across Spain with our little dog and chose the Casa Grande do Bachao, located about 20 - 25 minutes’ drive from the centre of the old city. It sounded like a great alternative to the usual hustle and bustle of a city centre hotel and our choice could not have been better as this place is a haven of tranquillity and relaxation, especially after a long hot day of driving. Casa Grande do Bachao is a cluster of old monastery buildings which have been beautifully modernised to provide a most charming and relaxing retreat with many original features tastefully incorporated. It is set in rolling countryside, surrounded by dense woodland and the Tambre river which can be reached easily for a leisurely stroll. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming with a handful of individual rooms and common areas to relax in. Our dog-friendly room was beautifully appointed and very comfortable although lacked air conditioning, whereas some other rooms did appear to have it. A delicious Spanish style buffet breakfast is provided and we also took up the option of the evening meal which is a fixed menu with meat and fish being served at 9.30pm on alternate nights. There is also a choice of reasonably priced wines available. The property owner, Javier who is an excellent chef, prepares the dinner and afterwards, makes a point of chatting to each guest in the dining room. There is a lovely sitting area with tranquil views, an ideal setting for a pre-dinner drink from the self-service honesty bar. There is plenty of free parking on site and we found the Wi-Fi was good throughout the property. This hotel is a hidden jewel and we have no hesitation in recommending it. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return.

There was no price list for drinks from the self service bar. However, when we got the bill at the end of our stay, we found the prices to be very reasonable.

Absolutely fabulous property, a converted monastery, in a beautiful location, perfect for relaxing after a visit to Santiago. Wonderful rooms, ours was Mateo, excellent breakfast and fabulous three-course dinner served each evening at 9.30. The chef is a star, just the right amount of delicious food with excellent wines. A lovely pool in which to cool down after a busy day. I really cannot praise this highlight of our holiday in northern Spain enough. One of the best places we have ever stayed.

Nothing at all.

A very unique estate that was everything we had hoped for plus more! Fabulous location, peaceful surroundings, views to take your breath away. Swimming pool, on site dinning for breakfast and dinner. Both meals were prepared with exceptional care, and artistry, served in a beautiful dining room. Our room was large and very comfortable. There were several rooms open for sitting, reading, chess, even a pool table. We highly recommend CasaGrande Do Bacho. You will love it.

The only issue we had was with the wifi. The thick stone walls make for difficult access. There is a sitting room close to the router that works well for wifi, though.

The historic architectural quality, the decoration of public areas and rooms. The staff so helpful and welcoming and the food - stunning.

Nothing not to like apart from a surprise addition of €50 per day for our dog. Well behaved, quiet, easy, clean and loved by guests and staff. Can understand a one off payment for potential cleaning but per day? Seemed excessive and not aware of when we booked. Having said that the experience remained fantastic.

This is a perfect place for a few days getaway. The location is so peaceful and luxurious and the buildings are beautifully decorated. The restaurant is a lovely place to enjoy good food. It's out of the way and suitable for more mature adults. We loved it and will be sure to return.

The only negative was the double bed being two beds placed together. However they were very comfy.
