Stayed in the cottage, it was super cozy and already warm when we got there. Private, with pretty view of the main building out of the window. The bed was huuuuge and very comfortable. Spotted a badger during the feeding. Had an evening meal at the pub when we arrived and both dishes ordered were superb. Good breakfast. Staff were very friendly and kind. Short walking distance to Rydal Cave and beautiful views by the water. Within short driving distance of many hiking trails and locations of interest. Great experience.
Bath was out of order, my partner hoped to have a soak after a day of hiking. Everything else was great though so this was very minor.

Wonderful hotel full of character, great staff, relaxed atmosphere and excellent location for walking - nice to be in the small hamlet of Rydal but with Ambleside a 20 minute walk away or short bus ride. Excellent breakfast and some good choices for evening meals too. And badger watching a huge bonus!
The upstairs cottage room is huge and generally comfortable but quite dark as it's heavily shaded by trees, roof leaked a little in one spot when we had extended mega heavy rain, and the hallway is a little damp - but none of this was a big deal and didn't spoil our stay - would definitely book this hotel again

The location was perfect away from the hustle of ambleside yet close to transport links and walks. Breakfast was delicious, beer great and we saw the badgers.
When I initially booked on booking.com, it was for a room with a single and double bed yet when I checked direct with property, it was just a double. As I was visiting with my mum, we needed two separate beds therefore the property efficiently changed us to a twin room. We felt misled with the booking.com room description.

Luke and the team made us feel so special and welcomed for the whole trip. I briefly mentioned we were there for a birthday celebration and was surpised with birthday deco at the dinner table, and very accomodating to us with drinks and food, creating a very relaxed vibe to spend quality time with family. We saw the badgers as well which was such a treat seeing them up close in the dark. The pies, fish and chips and dinner was amazing. Breakfast next day was lovely as well. Very close to the cave and lake walks we had such a great time. Lovely unique stay.
No fridge but easily rectified with the staff happy to keep items in the pub downstairs.

I travel all over the country staying at hotels on a regular basis, and I have to say, this was among the best. Straight from the start the staff were friendly, welcoming and courteous, the hotel itself is decorated tastefully and is of a really high standard. And above all, what made it even better, the menu was extensive and read very well, but even better, when the food arrived, it tasted just as good (something that is regularly not the case elsewhere). The room was clean and tidy and the bed was comfy.
I had a single room, to keep my costs down, and as I said above, it was clean & tidy and the bed was comfy, but I guess my only minor gripe would be that the shower stall was pretty small (I'm 6'1" and not the thinnest of guys) but even that was made better because the shower worked really well, which made a really nice change from other hotels.

Breakfast was fresh tasty and what you would expect, service was good, in fact just right not over attentive and not ignored. The staff are relaxed but obviously work hard in a relentless environment. The evening meals are the same in the bar as the dining room and you order from the bar. Personally I would consider the meals good old fashioned substantial bar meals, none of your pretentious BS and just the job if you had come down a mountain or had a day in the fresh air. The bar was well stocked and you could quite easily sit all day watching the coming and goings of this busy little place.
I was in a separate building to the main hotel. Although the room was like a mountaineers hut (stone built) the bed was comfy the bathroom was fresh and up to date, the shower was warm and powerful. The room was small but had perfectly adequate clothes space and dinky table just could do with something on the wall break the space up.

The hotel was lovely and the staff were absolutely wonderful, in particular Luke and Henry. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and at home. They really had the personal touch and remembered our breakfast orders and chatted with our little girl. There was a slight issue with the room and they could not help us enough to get it sorted.
The room wasn’t toddler friendly as there were tables with sharp edges, a fireplace and steps leading down to the bathroom. However, it would have been great if our daughter was older.

This was a last minute find for a spontaneous trip around the lakes and I am so so glad there was availability! So much so, I asked to stay a further night which I am forever grateful for the opportunity :). The room's were clean and tidy with everything you need after a day of exploring the surrounding area. The location was great to access some of the surrounding fells, walking along to the caves and nipping into Ambleside and Grasmere. The food (and the beer) was excellent as were the staff who were lovely and helpful. Being a solo traveller, I was welcomed and felt really comfortable staying here on my own. So thank you for a wonderful stay! I had the best time and plan to head back when I next find myself on an adventure in the lakes!

Lovely old Hotel right in the middle of the lake district. We picked this place mainly for the badgers, but also for it's character. Our room had a four poster bed, and was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel itself is very old, so you have all the old character adding stuff - sloping floors, old beams etc, which we found wonderful. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly.
Our room was above the kitchen so there was some minor noise from the ventilation there, but nothing serious.

The breakfast was very good. Our table was next to the breakfast bar table so was getting lots of traffic. This table was too close. Staff were excellent x very friendly and well mannered. The room was lovely. Bed very comfortable. Bath was lovely and relaxing. Veranda was a nice touch. Enjoyed the afternoon having few drinks in the garden.
Evening meal service at table would be better instead of going to bar. To be notified when you could go out to see badgers. Price for room was a little higher than I would expect to pay
