Took my mum for a two night stay when we were attending a family wedding. We stayed in room two which had two single beds for us. The staff were wonderful, welcoming ,friendly, pleasant, helpful, and polite. The food and choices for meat eaters, were good. Everything was clean. Beds were comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.
Although it advertises as catering for vegans, the dishes are very limited and there was no milk alternative available for cereal at breakfast. The vegan 'sausage ' was actually a potato and veg croquette, which was a shame as there are many alternative meat options on the market. Although I am a meat eater, my son and daughter in law who were also staying, are vegans. So this may not be somewhere they would choose again.

A proper Inn. Bed was nice, clean and comfortable. There is direct access to the rear gardens of the property from the room. Ample dressing table area. A nice touch is that they have a hairdryer AND hair straighteners hardwired for guest use. The shower itself was very good in a large bathroom. The owners served a fantastic breakfast on two occasions (black pudding was excellent). The pub fayre was extremely good with very generous portions (Turkey roast highly recommended). The staff were friendly, helpful and down to earth.
Nothing really. There is a bit of silicone mould around the shower but this cannot be avoided if the rooms are in constant occupancy.

All the food we had was excellent, the chef certainly took pride in what he served up at all times. The staff were very helpful. The room had access to a garden which was handy to walk the dog around first thing in the morning
We were charged as we checked out for our little dog but had had no welcome package as described in the room folder. Our used tea bags were not replenished in the room. Our heating could not be turned off in our room which meant it was exceedingly hot 2 nights (we had reported it to breakfast staff). No orange juice at breakfast on the Wednesday (it was all gone) The room was smaller than expected

Stayed in Garden Room 4 which was lovely. Nicely decorated with good powerful shower, comfy bed, iron, hairdryer, straighteners & safe. Lovely gift for the dog with variety of treats. Access to garden was handy when dog needed to go out in middle of night. The bar & restaurant is lovely. Very friendly staff, nice cosy log fire. Had dinner in restaurant- tasty food reasonably priced. Breakfast was great with everything youâd expect on a full English. Recommended and wouldnât hesitate to stay again if visit Appleby in future.
Everything was lovely apart from the room being a little cold overnight.

3rd time staying here and it's my default hotel/room in the area. It's a lovely building with a great pub/restaurant a couple of minutes walk from the centre of appleby. I've always paid less than 100 pounds for a garden queen room which is fantastic value, it's great having the patio doors out to the garden. Breakfast is Included and it's as good as you will get anywhere. The rooms are always spotless and very comfortable Cannot recommend the place enough
The room can get a bit hot as there's no A/C Being very picky the rooms don't have any usb chargers and the beds are pretty firm, personally I like that but just worth knowing.

The staff were all very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the evening meal very much and rated the cooked breakfast very highly. Our room was very acceptable and comfortable & clean.
It was great to find that we had a garden room. However, we sat in the garden on the afternoon we arrived, but found that the paved bit immediately outside the door needed to be swept as there were dead leaves and weeds growing there. The little garden bed right outside the door was full of weeds and overgrown. It would take very little to weed & put in a few plants & it would make a lot of difference to the overall appearance, instead of looking neglected. The door surround when you opened the garden door was in need of a good wash as it was dirty. This area could easily be a delightful little space to relax in.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The accommodation was very comfortable as were the beds, the property was warm, and the facilities were excellent. The cost of the stay was very reasonable, and the dinner and breakfast were very good. The yoghurt at breakfast was deliciously creamy, and the cooked breakfast delicious. We would definitely stay at The Royal Oak again.
The only problem we encountered was the level of traffic noise but we appreciate that it is very difficult to soundproof a property as old as The Royal Oak and it did not disturb us too much.

Charming ancient inn, particularly welcoming to dogs. Our room had direct access to an enclosed garden, and there is a lovely walk through the village to a peaceful spot on the River Eden below the historic Appleby Castle. Great service, with a smile, even when we arrived after closing-time (as a courtesy, always phone ahead with ETA as there is no night reception desk). We wished weâd arrived in time for dinner or a pint in the cosy tap-room. Hearty Cumberland breakfast, and even a menu for dogs. Would definitely stay again.

Decent-sized room, well-furnished and decorated with comfortable beds, which were a delight to spend the night in. The ensuite shower room was spacious, modern and with areas for one's toiletries, etc., which, in many cases, is a rare find. Dinner was excellent, with a good, unpretentious menu, representing the best of British cuisine and reasonably priced, served by friendly and attentive staff. Although we only managed one course, we were still replete by breakfast time, so ordered a more modest bacon and eggs instead of the full works, brought to us by a young but very efficient waitress. Certainly recommend and want to come again for a longer stay - hopefully soon.
There was nothing we didn't like. A perfect, small hotel/pub.

Absolutely everything, I was greeted upon arrival by the landlady, and she was so lovely. I stayed the one night as I was photographing a wedding the next day. Nothing was no trouble at all and the room was beyond what I expected. After being shown to my room and taking my things up I came back down for some food and a few drinks. The food was exceptional both evening and breakfast. I would highly recommend and I will be back again, for a longer stay. I've told my family and friends about how amazing it is, and I'm sure they plan to visit. I highly recommend and I can't wait to return. âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
