central location with lots of amenities friendly and helpful staff a building with some history

Little bit dated furniture and some fixtures not finished which just let the property down ie bathroom flooring,repairs around bath, grouting in bathroom needed a deep clean

This was our second stay at The Bull and the staff were as polite, friendly and accommodating as the first time. And this time they were working over Christmas. We had breakfast this time. The full English was well cooked and there were adequate options like cereals on offer if a large breakfast wasn't wanted. Again, the room was very cosy and well cleaned. Housekeeping was very good. It's a lovely old pub with a good buzz, but after 11.0pm things quieten down quickly so you aren't disturbed at night.

It is a historical building and so when booking people should realise maybe a window doesn't close like modern ones or the hot water isn't always boiling hot 24/7.(It was fine for us). However, I doubt these things apply to the rooms in the modern annex at the back.

Very helpful staff dealt with two bathroom issues quickly and efficiently including a change of room. The room was a good size and the bed comfortable. The breakfast selection was good with the choice of continental, cooked or a lighter offering although the availability of choices on the continental breakfast was somewhat haphazard. The hotel was within a short drive of Colchester, Chelmsford, Long Melford, Lavenham and Braintree with Ipswich further away but with easy access via the A12.

The bathroom in the second bedroom had a cracked sink and was in need of redecoration.

Good-sized, quiet room and en-suite with option of both bath and shower, plus tea/coffee facilities. Liked the 'olde worlde' features of the building and room. Very comfy king-sized bed.

There was no-one on Reception on my arrival, and the 'Find' bell did not seem to work so had to go and find somebody. Unfortunately no evening meal available due to technical fault in the kitchen, but staff offered to send out for take-away if needed.

I arrived early in the evening, and I had a friendly welcome. The room had everything I needed, including an iron and ironing board and even biscuits. Mark and his team made me feel very welcome, which was good for me as I was staying on my own. Breakfast was superb, and there is a great menu as well or many other restaurants in walking distance. The staff cannot do enough for you, so when I visit the area again, I will try here first. Thanks guys!

The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the manager Tracy. Breakfast is included and good choices and portion. The room was spacious, especially when compared to the compact bathroom. Blackout curtains work well, and although the room was facing the main street, we were not disturbed by noises from traffic or passerbys.

We stayed for 3 nights (Fri, Sat, Sun). When we checked in, the receptionist told us breakfast would be from 8-10AM. However, when we came down for breakfast on Monday morning at 9:30, breakfast had already finished - turned out that breakfast was served at 7-9AM on weekdays. It was our oversight to take the receptionist's words for it and didn't double check on the booking page (which we were reminded that the different times were stated). The manager Tracy acknowledged the situation and sorted our breakfast swiftly anyway, so thank you for that!

Staff friendly and helpful patient and clear speaking. Reakfast was very nice continenatal and traditional English.beds super comfy room well set out and equipt decent hair dryer iron erc lovely co.ing back and room been cleaned beds made and fresh towls. Dinners were nice. Nice central area with nice parade of local shops to have a wander about we t swimming local leisure centre thanks lovely memorable break away

Choices added Bathroom hot tap moves when turn it bath _shower was bit dated but did the job and food menu was lovely but nice have more healyhy choices added like a light pasta dish chicken and bacon or tomato and herb

Breakfast, a varied selection, good variety, endless coffee and tea. Dinner, good pub fare, plenty of choice, very good tap beers and large selection of lagers. Rooms quaint, with good facilities, some a little quirky that added to the ambience, great meandering old pub, possibly not suited to persons with limited mobility, Excellent staff, cheerful under pressure, always attentive, couldn’t do enough for us, we’ll worth a visit if you’re happy with old, quaint and quirky friendly pubs that give back atmosphere and memories of times past. Would visit again happily. Also a great pub for family gatherings as it has three areas in the pub to meet up.

Description of some rooms may have given better choices. We travelled with a recovering from surgery relative and she found the old hotel, no downstairs rooms, steep stairs but steps inside her room as well very difficult which affected her movement in the room. All made for the attractiveness of the hotel but difficult for the unaware resident. Our room had six mind your head signs displayed wonderfully at various parts of the ceiling and beams in our room. I’m 6’ 2” and the signs would have been better located on the floor as I don’t regularly look up, but I did notice the signs on contact.

Got all the usual tea, coffee. Room was essentially quiet, mine was near the fan - it did go quieter at night tho. There was no noise from the bar/restaurant. The building was very historic - low beams, etc.. The area seemed safe and quiet and was a good location to explore the area. The breakfast was good - cooked and continental on offer to pick anything you wanted. The cooked was good.

The room ws warm; it seemed a warm building. Parking was available, but soon got filled up.

We asked for early breakfast due to an appt to get to and the chef was already on it when we arrived downstairs, car park was busy but we parked okay when arrived and after back from wedding. Nice touch being able to pop to pub for drink when we got back to take upstairs. Bed was comfy as slept well even if not for many hours. Breakfast was lovely full English and dairy free option Really quiet on a thursday night and lovely location on Bridge and wish we had more time to walk around Halstead.

No coffee or tea or juice offered with breakfast and slight confusion as whether breakfast was included or not, but the man on reception very good and apologetic when realised it was all in, which was very good of him.
