February 2024

I was in a 6 bed, and apart from 1 we all had single beds/ or were bottom bunk which was lovely. We also had TWO full size fridge freezers in the room which was amazing!!!!! And we had a private bathroom, air con and Wi-Fi. There was a pool but I didn’t use it while I was there so can’t really say. Staff were lovely. Kitchen was in the middle of renovation so can’t properly review that but they had hot plate ovens, and a microwave. Could do with a few air fryers in my opinion but otherwise I was happy. Plus I saw a really cute possum so that was a bonus haha. It’s also not too far to get to catch the greyhound or get a ferry to Magnetic Island.

Nothing really other than would like them to get a few air fryers. Wouldn’t mind a chair lift to make lugging all my luggage upstairs easier haha, would also make it wheelchair accessible.

I had my own room with an a/c, ceiling fan, my own fridge, and a sink for $71NZD per night; absolutely no complaints. The kitchen and laundry were very good, as were the toilets and showers which are separate. I stayed for two weeks with no drama or problems from anyone, it was quiet and cool at night and the doors are locked at 21:00 so everything is secure; the location is excellent, this has got to be one of the best places I've stayed in ever!

A/C could do with a clean, it's cheap so you can clean your own room because they have everything if you need it.

Pleasant organized place if you're trying to keep it simple while exploring the area. Takes about 30 minutes to arrive at the ferry from nearby bus stop. Going back and forth is easy. Ferry has weekly passes making Townsville Strand, museum, and the island economical and interesting. It takes a week to see it all and Civic Guesthouse has everything to make that happen.

Nothing. It's no frills, clean, safe, quiet. Staff help when you need something. The neighborhood is uninspiring but it doesn't matter because you must move around all day to see this place and the bus accomplish this

We stayed here one night before and one night after our trip to magnetic island. Our twin room was clean, spacious, and even had its own refrigerator. The outdoor communal spaces were really lovely for congregating and meeting people. There were social events arranged by the staff most evenings. There is a free shuttle between the hostel and the greyhound/ferry station a few times per day.

Kitchen was a bit small for the number of people and got very very hot. Not enough toilets and showers - there was only one of each for women / men on our corridor and I did sometimes have to wait.

The backyards area is hudge and comfy. You have lots of space for your meals and to chill. Staff is nice, specially Arthur and Juan, they made the best to accommodate us kn a private room for longer than we first planned. Bathroom and toilets are separate. All rooms have a sink for your first face wash in the morning, that is also cool! They have chilled water fountain for convenience. The kitchen is well equipped and cleaner than many homes around. It's close to woolworths, they have transfer from airport and also to the ferry. They have some socials organized. Everything was good. We really enjoyed our stay

The bbq was out of fuel, so we couldn't use it. Some of the guests said that it was like this for the last week.

It was a comfortable, clean, well-run establishment with reasonable facilities for the price. The staff were super helpful and approached every task with an up-beat, can-do attitude. Most impressed with these aspects. Also the outdoor communal areas were great to relax in and always kept spotlessly clean. I got the impression that most guests appreciate the facilities and do their best to maintain the standard already set which is a big help to the staff.

As I say, the facilities were reasonable for the price point. Spend more money elsewhere, get better facilities. For example, the rooms with double beds don't have quite enough space to move around, exercise etc. or enough storage capacity so you end up storing things under the bed. There are a few coat hangers on hooks but no cupboards for clothes or anything else. Wash basins throughout are positively tiny and it's difficult to brush your teeth etc., without splashing water on the floor. One of the bathrooms has hot and cold water taps but no plug for the basin so you only have a choice of hot or cold for washing or shaving etc. But these small details did not ruin our enjoyment of the place.

Staff I saw were super friendly and helpful. I really liked the fact that at checkin they took the time to take me to my room and show me all of the other amenities as well! Not many hostels do this anymore and I think it’s nice to be shown around and have everything explained to you. The hostel has some really nice social and chill out areas and is really well set up. The room was really clean and comfortable with a fridge in there too which was useful.

The hostel is quite far away from the greyhound bus stop if you’re arriving or leaving this way. They do offer shuttle services but not for all of the services, so bear in mind it’s a good 25 minute walk, especially if you’re leaving on the 07:00 bus to Airlie beach! The kitchen could do with some more utensils and cutlery, but generally it was okay. It was also a little unclean in some places in the kitchen, though definitely not the worst I’ve seen and standards were quite good for an aussie hostel. The room doors/windows are not sound proof at all so late at night I could hear everybody outside in the social areas, until atleast 1am which isn’t ideal when getting up early the next day but I suppose to be expected to some extent in a hostel.

From having a nightmare hostel in Sydney to arriving at Civic Guest House, it was amazing to see my own room and a double bed. Very clean, I had my own sink and fridge/freezer. It was like home from home. The pool was amazing! Was shocked to see how nice it was.

The hostel wasn't overall sociable compared to what I've had before. Maybe introduce a free hotdog night etc. I had been to Budds in Surfers and they have something on every night which brings people out and mixing.

I liked the vibes of this hostel, there were social activities organized by the people there. The owners are fantastic, very attentive, talkative and friendly. They are working hard to upgrade their facilities slowly but surely.

Some of the facilities are quite outdated, like really old, and cleanliness wasn't aways top notch, but the owners are renovating the place and replacing the old showers, toilets etc. Once done, it will be all good :)

I had a private room with an en-suite. The room was cosy and the aircon worked very well. A good-sized fridge and a fan are also provided. There is a 10pm cut off for noise and other guests abided my that very well. Location is decent. 25 mins walk from the harbour but close to shops and amenities. The room was clean and bed comfy. Staff were all very friendly.

Everything in the room was very old and tatty. All metal was rusting, air con unit although operational was about 100 years old, the fridge was once again operational but falling to pieces. The en-suite bathroom was one of the bleakest rooms I've ever been in. This place is a decent hostel for one or two nights, but I have stayed in better-kept places for cheaper. Definitely on the pricier side for what is effectively a hostel in a rough city.
