The Dalur hostel is what I would call gold standard. I have 3 hostels that I would rate as gold standard, Castle Rock Edinburgh, Black Isle Inverness and Dalur (City Hostel as was) Reykjavik. These hostels are the ones I'm always happy to book and really enjoy going to and staying at. If I can get a booking I'm really pleased, because the standard is so high. Clean, comfortable, well and efficiently run it's a pleasure to stay at these hostels and Dalur is no exception. Keep up the the really good work please!!

other people snoring, but, I do so myself.

eco friendly, beautiful campus/grounds, the kitchen is great, loved that they encouraged recycling, staff very nice, laundry available w racks if you want to airdry (dryer also available), shared space is very nice as well, easy to check in (every guest has a unique code for entry)

parking can get a little tight if you arrive late into the night; women's bathroom on the 2nd floor gets flooded after a shower / the toilet area can be a little gross after that since the water floods into the toilet area (the partition between them is a little small) but it does get cleaned everyday and looks quite nice after being cleaned

I liked the location, though it is a bit away from the city centre, the coast with great view, grocery store and ferry terminal are a few minutes by walking. There is a bus stop right infront of the hostel, with regular buses even on Sundays. I arrived late at night, but was able to check-in and access with door code. The hostel is a part of large camping complex with top-notch facilities (two spacious kitchen, security system, dining, washing, heating, courtyard, garden, lounge, etc.). The kitchen had enough accessories and some free ingredients to cook and eat for budget travellers like me. The beds were clean and comfortable. The staffs and guests were very friendly. Overall, I enjoyed my stay there.

One male washroom was out of service, which I expected to be fixed soon. Also I did not like mixing elderly people with young adults in the same dormitory room, as they have different sleeping cycles. 😆

Location just opposite the bus stop and next to thermal pool. Staff was extremely helpful. Nice breakfast you can buy extra but there is everything you need to start a day in a healthy way. In a 4 dormitory room there was a bathroom with the toilet, there was a sink with a mirror and hair dryer outside the bathroom which is very useful in a room of 4. You don't have to go outside the room to use shared toilets or bathrooms. The heating and hot water never fails. In the guests kitchen there are all facilities you need to prepare your meal. There is also the laundry room in the basement.

I didn't like the way how some of guests ignore rubbish segregation rules in the guests kitchen. But this is not hostel fault. Maybe more eco promoting materials and information would be helpful.

Very reasonable rate for a 4-people guestroom with in-door toilet and shower ! Thank God they sell earplugs at the reception (I forgotten mine). Excellent show and rack to put your stuff. Quiet location yet reasonably close to down town. Nice lounge with plenty of space (except when group of US-teens barges in). Regular coffee (and cappucino) - not the one they serve at breakfast - is excellent.

Coffee @ breakfast is pretty bad . There is also a facility to wash and dry your clothing but it's totally overpriced (Euro 10 for washing and drying).

They are remodeling the hostel into a family freindly environment! We have been staying at the Dalur since 1999, back when it was a young adult (rowdy hostel, so we camped at the Dalur for two decades). Since this past winter they have bee remodeling and its a pleasure to mingle with local families and campers from all different backgrounds.

Guests make the difference of your stay, so treat each other how you want to be treated and everyone will have a great experience. The staff is amazing and always helping if a situation arises!!! I have been staying here once a month since March this year and it is my go to location for the swimming pool/hot pots next door. Second choice is Loft downtown for close restaurant walks in the winter and Sunnhollin pool.

This hostel completely changed my perception of the hostel experience and was better than some hotels I've booked across the world. The entire check-in experience was seamless, with key information sent much in advance. Staff were extremely friendly and were available during the entire stay. Hostel was secure, clean, highly-organised, and safe. Showers and rooms were the cleanest and most private in all my time as a traveller. Very fast WiFi and comfortable seating in the communal spaces. Bottomless coffee really sealed the deal as well as the spare room for working or coworking. As the hostel is located away from Reykjavik central, I even had the pleasure of seeing the northern lights on the last night of my stay! I cannot recommend this place enough and will stay again for the next trip to Iceland.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing lol.

Nothing to add here. The stay was exceptional

I had a wonderful time as a solo traveller at Dalur, meeting alot of other international travellers was my highlight as I ended up having alot of nice conversations and connections to people I will hopefully meet in the future. There are large crowds of foreign travellers coming through the hostel, often youth so this is definitely a family-oriented accommodation. The bed was excellent with a little nook to store your personal things, kitchen was safe to store things and the mentality of recycling instead of throwing away as product that weren't needed are left for other travellers either in the kitchen or bathroom. The laundry is free which was extremely convenient and the area is really peaceful being some minutes walk away from the city. Staff were extremely helpful, water at reception was always nice and the kitchen front-end always made for a comfortable environment

Nothing, except that ladders for some upper bunks may be against a wall so sometimes it might be a challenge to find the best way up
