Fantastic location, easy to walk to Malls, restaurants, and only a couple of km from the Palawan Monument, and even then only 1km further to the historic buildings of the old Dutch centre, and then on to China Town. The decor is beautiful and it still retains its old colonial feel and style. The breakfast has a great selection of Indonesian options. The price was right - good hotels can be cheap in Indonesia, but this one was priced correctly for this country.

Sarkie's restaurant was closed. Otherwise it would have been a 10.

The Hotel itself is in a great location. The room was a lovely suite, even as the cheapest option. The breakfast was excellent and had a wide range of cuisines. The pool was lovely and quiet, even though the gym was adjacent and we were close to a busy road. Staff were exceptional and I would gladly stay here again.

The heritage building is unique. So is its location in the centre of Surabaya, Indonesia's Singapore perhaps. The architecture is a combination of Dutch-Indonesian modernism of the 1930s and grandiose British Ray and Oriental inspired design of the 1890s. Staff are kind, interested and helpful and clearly motivated by management that takes the trouble talking to guests. All comforts and hygiene that international travellers expect is there. On top of that: I counted five! courtyards with gardens and one with a large swimming pool. Businessmen and tourists both seen at breakfast. Large room, spacious shower separate from bath, excellent large bed and a good desk to work at.

The restaurant offers favorites from all continents as one might expect for an international hotel. However, the Indonesian kitchen is deserving of better and special treatment in this locations. The hotel might have a restaurant where Indonesians and foreign travellers alike come to eat a special choice of the best Indonesian food. Some of the heritage interior, pictures and furniture could make way for more modern interpretations of quality.

This was our bit of luxury as we travelled through Java, and it didn't disappoint! The hotel is beautiful, with atmospheric colonnades and gardens, and the rooms are large and beautifully appointed. We were practically the only guests at breakfast both days - the buffet selection was immense and interesting, and the waiting staff member (Rafi) was very friendly and professional. The chef also came out to greet us on the second day, which was much appreciated. The pool area was very nice and my daughter enjoyed her massage.

We had hoped that room service might be 24 hours, as we arrived at about 11.30pm after a long day by ferry, car and rail from Karimunjawa via Semarang, and hadn't had lunch or dinner. Also it was a shame that the Sarkies restaurant was shut during our visit.

Staying at the Hotel Mahajarit was blissful. We were only in Surabaya to break up the long train trip from Yogyakarta to the ferry terminal for Bali. Happily, we followed the advice of the rail guru, The Man in Seat 61, not to miss this place. Built in 1911 and richly historic, it’s a cool haven in the heart of the city. In an upgraded room, we could not have been more comfortable or appreciative of the value we were receiving. Public areas and the pool are maintained impeccably, and my traditional aromatherapy massage in the hotel spa was superb. The included breakfast buffet offers an extraordinary range of items, and the lunch and two dinners we ate in the hotel were delicious. Bravo to all the hard work to make the hotel function so well after so many years.

We had no complaints about anything.

The old colonial building architecture, garden, furniture and atmosphere. You can feel the classic and fancy old feeling once walked in the building. All staff were nice and accomodating. Breakfast was great with lots of Indonesian and western food choices. Bathroom was fabulous and fancy, great hot water pressure! Love it! Location was close to shops, food and big shopping mall. We got upgraded rooms from classic to heritage with no extra costs due to the availability. Amazingly, though it is at the city centre we did not hear any noise from the city traffic, so it was very pleasant and quiet.

Not enough power points to charge our devices. No separate toilet bidet hose. Old type flush system. A desk phone to the receptionist did not work well. One of the floor boards was creaky when you walked on it (Room 167). We asked for pray mats but they did not send them to our room though they said they were available by request. So we had to move the coffee table and pray at the carpet which was not very clean!

I am an American visiting Malaysia and Indonesia for the winter. I have stayed at colonial-era hotels all over Southeast Asia and Hotel Majapahit is the most beautiful and authentic of them all. General Manager K. Salamun graciously introduced himself and told me some of the history. The hotel is well-conserved, particularly the back area where little has changed since its 1910 inception. I had Room 050 near the Balinese spa (also enthusiastically recommended). Roaming the property is like travelling to another time. Although situated on a very busy street, all I heard in the morning was the garden fountain, birds and the Muezzin in the nearby mosque calling to prayer. The staff was uniformly gracious and alert. Excellent value. Recommended heartily for a stay in Surabaya.

Staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was fantastic. Huge selection of foods on offer, from pastries, cereals, fruit, eggs, Indonesian porridge, Indonesian dishes. So much choice you don't need to eat again until dinner! Loved wandering around the grounds, reading about the heritage and looking at the photos. Beautiful gardens.

It wasn't that we didn't like, but the rooms were in need of a bit of a refurbishment. It looked like some areas of the grounds, particularly the buildings, could do with some attention (painting, cleaning, cracks repairing) It would also be very helpful if the room had an information booklet providing things to see and do in the area and maybe a hard copy map. I know people use digital technology these days but local.(inside information is always a bonus). Especially local restaurants, eateries and bars if you choose not to eat at the hotel all the time.

It is a beautiful hotel with an old world charm. The rooms were spacious and beautifully furnished. The bed was the most comfortable I've I ever had in a hotel. The breakfast spread was superb. The location on lively Jalan Tunjungan was ideal with cafes and restaurants and Tunjungan Plaza across the street. Yet once you enter the hotel, it was like an oasis of peace and quiet with the beautiful gardens and fountains.

The bathroom door, being antique I guess, tended to get stuck and needed a good push to open it.

We love the architecture of the hotel and its history. Colonial heritage, decor and simplicity set around courtyard gardens. Breakfast is good, broad range of choices for numerous tastes. Large room with balcony terrace. Location is good. Walking distance, taxi, Grab or even a bucak ride to many places. An hour or less to the airport, train station. Subject to time of day.

No real dislikes. The hotel started welcoming guests in 1910 so as with all things of age needs attention which it gets.
