We stayed here ten years ago and now have two fond memories. The ambiance is fantastic. We had a nice view across the valley. Room was clean. Breakfast was great. Caveoso filled our little coffee Thermos for the road. Good coffee! Ten years ago the smart phone map apps weren't as good but now Google maps made it easy to get in and out.

This is not a complaint about the Caveoso Hotel - just giving a bit more context for people thinking about booking. People must recognize that in these ancient towns parking can be a challenge. There's a municipal parking garage that we used which was 17 euros which I thought was fair.

Book room 9. It has a balcony with an incredible view.

Budget 30 euros a day for parking. You will have to leave the car outside the old town for 20 euros a day and pay the driver 10 euros to get to the hotel. And then another 10 euro taxi ride to fetch the car. Not sure why booking filters mention parking when the hotel doesn't have any parking at all.

Great location! Very easy to arrive by car and a tiny walk up some steps to get there. It’s right next to the Piazza San Pietro Caveoso and also an incredible view point at the church of Saint Mary Idris. It’s in a nice quiet part of old town and a great base to explore Matera. When we checked in our host gave us restaurant recommendations, told us about great viewing points and made other helpful suggestions. They also were able to recommend a driver for one of our transfers. The room was very clean and spacious. We really enjoyed our stay. Staff were lovely!

Bed is a little uncomfortable and the bathrooms is a little outdated but all functional.

The property was very close to the center of the historical town, it was easy to travel to all of the main tourist points. The view from the windows was especially beautiful and the architecture had been framed in an intentional way. The cave itself was unique and the furniture worked with the aesthetic perfectly. The master bed is large and great for gatherings around. The facilities were easy to access and use, and the staff was kind and helpful. Breakfast was fresh and tasty, and ordered to your liking.

In the second, smaller bedroom, there were ants coming from a hole in the cave wall and made it hard to sleep as they would come on to the bed and pillows.

Very nice "cave room", with plenty of space, comfortable beds, air conditioning and plenty of fesh water in the room fridge (much appreciated). The view on a "chiesa rupestre" from just outside our room was also spectacular. We were given plenty of useful information at the check-in, which helped us finalize our plans for visiting Matera in the short time we had (1 night stay only). Hotel staff was always friendly and supportive.

Breakfast setup can be improved. While food quality and breakfast room are good, the request to list in advance (the night before) all the food we wanted (and the related, exact quantities) made us a bit uncomfortable. However, that did not significantly impact our stay.

A nice hotel with an excellent location right in the old part of the city. I leave the room and I'm in the ancient street of the city, amazing. Breakfast had to be ordered on a separate form by items, unusual. But probably caused by the fact that it was possible to bring them into the room. Professional and friendly staff. Comfortable bed. Amazing environment in the cave, both the room and the bathroom. It is a bit unusual that the rooms are entered directly from the streets of the city. In the evening, however, tourism stops and there is peace.

At the reception, they recommended a wonderful view from the parking lot opposite Matera, about 6 km away, but it is a national park where entry is prohibited, but even the bus driver at the ramp claimed that I could go there by car. After about 200 m, a lady stopped us and pointed out that we are in a national park, where entry is really prohibited, so we turned it around. However, I expect a fine :-( However, this does not change the fact that Matera and the accommodation at the Caveoso hotel are wonderful.

Like everything about Matera, it was unique experience, and one that you will probably not find anywhere else in the world: staying in an actual cave! The staff were warm, welcoming and accommodating and ensured you had a 'unique experience'. They gave great advice on visiting the city, what to see and where to eat etc. They also went above and beyond such as making me a delicious breakfast pack for my room and arranging a taxi to take me to the bus station for a 7:30am coach. Bed was one of the best hotel beds I've ever stayed in. Location was perfect you were not too far away from anything! If I come back to Matera I will certainly stay at this hotel again!

We were return guests to this hotel and had a wonderful breakfast on our balcony. Staff here are really great and assisted us with minor issues on our short stay here. We would recommend this hotel, notwithstanding the minor difficulties that are encountered due to the local government by-laws. Last time we stayed (2017) we were able to drive our rented car to a car park adjacent to the hotel.

On this visit, due to local government by-laws banning motor vehicles from the Sassi area, we parked in the new city which immediately provided a transfer service to the hotel for us. As a result of our short stay, we left most of our luggage in the car overnight, and took an overnight bag with us. That worked fine and our luggage was secure. Cost of 75 euros seemed fair enough. There still seemed to be a lot of cars in the Sassi and we are not sure if it is an equitable by law.

I booked a junior with balcony. in pic it clearly overlooks the church on hill but they throw a few extra photos in there that still look like that is the room u are booking but it is not. be careful and make sure u are in room 9 (beautiful room) as room 2 ( although nice) was not worth the same $$. the younger fellow at the front desk proceeded to argue with me which was uncomfortable. the young gal called me later and I was able to get the better room for one night. I feel I was overcharged for 2 nights as I would not of booked the room they initially put me in . the good things… bed is soft but I liked it room was clean I thought breakfast was good although I just have coffee and croissant I left early and they brought me my coffee/croissant at 7 am which was super nice!! just be aware of room u are expecting

young fellow at desk - all he had to do was apologize for wrong room but he proceeded to argue. there are pics of the room I was in mixed in with the other pics but it really looked like same room in the pictures because they shoot the bad view from further away. very deceptive

The staff were very nice and helpful—Denise, Francesco. Not so much Joseph. The location in the Sassi was great and our room was in a good location of the hotel. We had a wonderful shower.

I think that the lights in our room and especially bathroom should have been working when we arrived. We also asked twice for someone to repair the one in the bathroom. There was no stopper/plug for the bathroom laboratory. I realize these are small things but essential to your visit in my opinion.
