This property was tranquil, impeccably designed by Bawa and staffed by a wonderful crew. A few steps from a untouched beach with swimmable areas, a gorgeous pool, beautiful food and drinks, a sprawling balcony for relaxing and unwinding, a very needed Ayurvedic massage listening to the ocean, and easy transport by tuk to areas like Hiriketiya. I will daydream about this perfect yellow house for a long time to come - until we visit again.

A place where time slows, nature and architecture blend seamlessly, and every moment feels effortless. Nestled on the best beach in the Tangalle area, it invites long walks on soft sand and perfect swims in warm, gentle waves. The rooms are stunning, filled with light and a quiet elegance that makes you feel at home yet somewhere extraordinary. The staff here are simply wonderful - warm, attentive, and always making sure your stay is unforgettable. And the breakfast? Absolutely incredible. Try the buffalo curd and the spicy Sri Lankan Omelett. We’re usually not the kind of travelers who spend much time in hotels during the day or have all our meals on-site, but The Last House is different. You don’t want to leave. Lunch and dinner here are as special as the place itself, making it easy to just stay and soak in the atmosphere. Step onto the beach, and if you're lucky, you might meet local fishermen who invite you to a sand game (spoiler: you will lose). A huge thank you to our fantastic driver, Taraka, who was arranged by the hotel and became our trusted companion for the entire trip. Always on time, incredibly skilled, and just a wonderful person - we highly recommend his service. The Last House is not just a hotel - it’s a meditation, a rare find, a place you never want to leave.

I almost don't want to share my review of The Last House because I want it to be my own little secret paradise! But of course, its fair to share. This is one of the most incredible hotels I've ever stayed in, and I've stayed in some pretty cool places. Of course the Geoffrey Bawa factor is cool, but the fact that the house manages to strike that perfect balance between luxury, yet so accessibly and comfortable. Nothing felt contrived or overdone, the house fit the surroundings perfectly, yet you felt like you were living in luxury. The incredibly beautiful and completely deserted beach is steps, STEPS, from the hotel. Every day we were there it was less than 5 people on the whole beach. Some of the best meals we had on our whole trip was at the Last House, the breakfast especially is incredible. And the service was impeccable. Nothing was too much, and they were super flexible with us on check in and check out time. Despite the fact that this place is a 12 hour flight from my home, I have no doubt in my mind that I will be back to this hotel. 11/10!

Absolutely nothing

A charming and delightful colonial-style designer property with many original building elements in an idyllic and isolated beach location - romantic in nature. Delicious although pricey food - both breakfast and dinner were outstanding...

The wifi was as temperamental as the weather, unfortunately, not being helped by a power cut in the middle of the night that went on for several hours knocking out fan and aircon... The beauty and formidable design of our non-ocean facing room was somewhat impaired by rather tired looking blackout roller blinds - an easy but we thought worthwhile fix...

We loved everything about The Last House. The food was the best we had on our entire trip and the menu had lots of seafood and salads. The design of the place was incredible (as we’d come to expect from Bawa) and everything looked very high and and was immaculately taken care of. We were catered to as if we were their only guests (we were not!). The staff even set up a romantic dinner for us on the beach. The location is great as it’s quiet but not remote or too far off. With that said, we ate outside of The Last House only once during our 4 day stay as the food was just so incredible.

Our only regret was that we didn’t stay longer. We even tried to rearrange our next stop so we could extend our stay but unfortunately the next hotel wouldn’t let us.

Lovely design - laid back relaxed vibe - no fuss - great location -staff very helpful - we really liked it - and want to come back

I loved it all - I am struggling to find anything I didn’t like - the only thing not quite perfect for me was the pool - - I love swimming but some days the sea was too rough for me to swim -and the pool a bit too short for swimming lengths - this won’t bother most people and wouldn’t stop me coming back again !

Everything was excellent! The room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The common areas were beautifully decorated and plenty of room to relax. We loved the outdoor showers and the bathroom was large, with an open shower. There was a private patio area opening to the green space between the property and the beach which was nice. The room was in the ground level but the breeze was slight. There is A/C which was a necessity! The food was some of the best we had in Sri Lanka! The menu was extensive and delicious. The staff was superb, catering to every need we had including arranging driver to Ella. The location was amazing, just steps away from the Mawella Beach which was deserted and quiet. Thank you for the beautiful stay!

A highlight of our honeymoon. The Last House is a real hidden gem on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Tim and his team were so welcoming and friendly, every detail was thought of to make our time there feel as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. The building was fantastic, surrounded by wild flowers and perfectly framed views at each turn. The location was idyllic - strolling along the pristine beach or watching monkeys play in the garden. Candlelit dinner on the beach was absolutely brilliant. Hopefully we will be back for our golden wedding anniversary…

Everything is perfect! Amazing place - beautiful architecture and interior with private beach, enjoy the ocean breeze and listening the sounds of waves to go asleep, especially if you live Bawa’s design. Staff are very very helpful and friendly - not 24 hrs service (which is understandable) but definitely will accommodate most of your needs. All facilities are clean and well maintained.

Too many flies at the common area

We have stayed in many beautiful hotels around the world, but I think “the last house”, is probably my favourite of all time. Firstly, the property is incredibly beautiful. The gardens are well manicured, and the house is in wonderful condition. You fee as though you are lucky enough to be staying in someone’s beautiful home, instead of a hotel. The manager and staff were so lovely, and we really enjoyed our chats with them. Breakfast was lovely, as was dinner. The beach front location is perfection, as is the beautiful pool. We stayed in the cinnamon hill suite, which has the large bedroom, bathroom and the ocean views from the balcony, which i’d highly recommend booking. We will definitely be returning on our next holiday in Sri Lanka.
