Very easy to find off the A66 . Looks impressive from outside . Our room was located in an annex just outside past the spa . Room 40 , spacious, with a beautiful four poster bed . I had booked a 'superior room ' , I wouldn't class it as superior but nice all the same . Bathroom had shower and huge separate bath . Very clean too . Nice bath towels , just missing a hand towel . Lovely complimentary soaps . And tea/coffee tray was nice , quality items . Bed was very comfortable. Double sockets either side of the bed . Hotel bar was nice with comfy seating and hand painted wall coverings . Plenty of seating outside in the garden where we also enjoyed a drink . Dogs are welcome in the bar area which we didn't mind at all . We ate in the Gilroy's restaurant in the evening , it was busy with a nice atmosphere. Michelle, our waitress is lovely , she lives locally and is a credit to the hotel . The younger waitresses are also nice , service was good . Our meals were beautiful, couldn't fault the menu , price and quality. Not a scrap left on our plates , and the pudding was also very yummy . 2 adults , 2 main meals and 2 puddings with 3 drinks cost £66 . Worth it . You get a bottle of water too on your table. There are lots of areas in the hotel to relax in , comfy sofa's and arm chairs. Breakfast is served in the Gilroy restaurant, it was busy but attended to with ease by the lovely friendly staff . I can tell you that the Breakfast was amazing , menu on the table but you help yourself to the continental options and cooked options , you can even ask for other specific items that are cooked to order . The choice was superb , and wow the quality of everything I ate was superb . There is something for everyone . Check out at 11am is great . I was gutted we only stayed 1 night .

Breakfast was great. Friendly staff. Food was good. Lovely room to eat in. We were part of a large group and the facilities over the 3 nights were great as were the staff and the food. The weather helped as good use was made of the excellent garden. Good range of drinks on offer at the bar.

Our room while large and spacious, had a creaky bed and every time I turned over, the bed made a loud noise. Some may think it characterful, but it was a bit of a nuisance. Also the bathroom had an ill fitting toilet seat that didn't match the shape of the toilet, so quite a lot of the porcelain rim was exposed. Not ideal for a female to sit on the toilet touching the toilet rim where a male may have splashed having a pee.

The staff were friendly and helpful. I stayed in room 11 which was really nice - possibly the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. The hospitality tray was full of nice Taylor's speciality teas and coffee bags, nice biscuits, hot chocolate sachets and bottled water. The towels were big and fluffy, there were quality toiletries in the bathroom. The room was spacious and had everything I needed.

I had dinner on arrival and found the ambience in the restaurant a little odd. There was no background music at all, and the lighting seemed quite bright. I'm vegetarian, and there was only one option on the menu that I could eat. There were 4 different meat options. Maybe an additional vegetarian dish would add variety to the menu?

The restaurant was exceptional, great food and well prepared.

I didn't like the way that my bill for my dinner had a "discretionary" 10% service charge added. This is a bad practice and I will not be told what amount I should pay as a tip. I had the 10% removed and did not leave a tip at all. However, had the bill not included the 10%, I may well have left a tip and it may have been more than the 10%. TIPS ARE AT THE BUYERS DISCRETION AND NOT THE DISCRETION OF THE SUPPLIER. They do this because they suppose that people will be afraid to appear ungenerous if they refuse to pay it. They are motivated by sheer greed.

We booked a standard double but were offered an upgrade to a suite at a very reasonable price. The room was fabulous with a large bathroom, including bath and separate shower. There was a middle room with a sofa and writing desk, and a large bedroom with super king size bed. A coffee machine with coffee pods was provided along with a kettle and variety of teas. Breakfast was excellent and I can highly recommend the Eggs Royale.

We had dinner in the evening. We did enjoy most of the food but for the price, I’d expect the potato rosti not to be burnt, have more vegetables on the plate and have the fat on the belly pork rendered down properly.

Lovely modern feel within a beautiful old building. I really liked how the history was displayed around the building so you could find out more. My room was lovely and spacious with lots of light. Hospitality tray was full of lots of lively treats and bed was lovely and comfy. Beautiful location to wake up to.

There was a lovely big bath in my bathroom but no bath soak and as the shower gel is attached to the wall I was unable to use it. Also there was mould on the bath seal and little finishing touches such as cotton wool would have really made a difference. I also would have liked to have had more information about the breakfast during check in or a menu in the room.

The hotel is lovely .set in lovely picturesque scenery we booked it for the spa next door the staff are very helpful and friendly especially Kathy and josie who provided our lovely meals at lunch and breakfast .

We had room 11.The room was spacious but unfortunately the bed was to small it was a double at must also to soft and the mattress needs replacing there was a mattress topper on the bed but not enough to hide the lumps inn the bed .the hotel says near Barnard Castle but it is 3 miles away and you couldn't walk it as to busy a road to cross so abit isolated.

The hotel is ideally situated just off A69 about 10 miles from Scotch Corner, in a nice countryside setting. Parking just across from the hotel is easy and convenient. Reception staff were welcoming and helpful. The room was comfortable and welcoming, and clean and tidy. The evening meal on the 1st night was good enough for me, but my wife's Dover sole was a bit of a tiddler, which was disappointing given the cost. But overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others without reservation.

2 things come to mind: 1. a wardrobe especially if you are staying for more than 1 night, which we were. Also, the bar menu option was the same as the restaurant, it would have been nice to have cheaper, simpler fare available. Nothing untoward, though: we enjoyed our stay.

In general terms, it was reasonably comfortable. The restaurant was very nicely decorated and more up to date than rest of the hotel. The gardens were lovely to relax in and the general location was good, with easy access to places of interest. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful - a credit to the company, in fact. The majority of the meals we had were tasty, well cooked and nicely presented.

Room spacious but not what we would class as "superior" in other aspects. View from room not as advertised. One meal was disappointing as duck was tough. Very poor Internet connectivity.

Staff were helpful checking us in quickly when we were running late for our reservation in the hotel restaurant. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was big, clean and bright. Breakfast was tasty, with lots of options available. We also liked the cosy bar and garden area.

We ordered drinks as we sat down to dinner but it took so long for my partner's drink to arrive we had finished our starter and were almost through the main course by the time he got it. The doors to our room and our bathroom were difficult to open and close - old doors in need of a refurb I think. There were no bedside lights - just the overhead light - in the bedroom.
