We booked a double with a bathroom across the hall however on arrival we we offered a twin en suite which was good. The room was small but we appreciate it's a very old Inn and alterations are not always possible. Room was well equipped, great tea tray! Amazing beds, feather quilts, so lush! Private parking although blocked in by the chef the next morning , luckily we had a late departure. The bar area and snug are cosy and we had a drink before exploring, served in a marked glass. We were told earlier that tea and coffee for the room could be topped up from the bar, there was only sugar and decaff available. The breakfast menu was good and plentiful although we weren't made aware of the deviations available to the table next to us who had smashed avocado poached eggs on toast and porridge. My advice is if it isn't on the menu- ask! Overall it's good value for money and a good night's sleep so would stay here again. Our critical eye is due to 30 years in this industry!

Shouty breakfast waitress, dirty bar glasses, no top up tea from bar and being blocked in the car park by staff

The location is perfect, 30 seconds walk from the bustling market square and a great base for exploring Swaledale and Wensleydale. The breakfast was delicious and there were a variety of options. Our cockapoo, Jackson, particularly enjoyed the sausages the chef cooked for him each morning! The bar is very welcoming and extremely dog-friendly. We struck up several conversations built out of initial compliments of other people’s dogs! We ate in the hotel each night; there is a lot of choice, the set menu is great value and the food is excellent. There is also a good range of drinks with excellent local ales on tap. Would definitely stay here again if visiting Richmond.

We were happy with everything

Great location. One minute walk to the main square with loads of restaurants, shops and pubs. Market on Saturday morning was a bonus. Free parking, just a bit tight. Lovely brekky with lots of choice set in a really nice room. Tea/Coffee facilities in room had lots of choice. Staff friendly and helpful. Quality bedding and pillows. Good TV package. Lunch at pub decent.

WiFi intermittent. Room too hot to start off with until I turned the heating off. Corridors can be noisy when people are walking past. Woken up by a family with kids around 10.30pm running up and down.

Convenient in the middle of Richmond. There was parking on site. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing seemed any trouble. Room clean and tidy but looks tired. The hotel is very old which could make it difficult to modernise. The breakfast on the Saturday was tasty and they were able to substitute the bacon for vegetarian sausages on the eggs Benedict.

The breakfast on the Sunday wasn’t enjoyable. The mushrooms were bland and didn’t taste of anything. The beans were also bland and looked like they were the last of the pan, having sat there for ages.

The location was as stated: within a short walking distance from shops and tourist attractions. The beds were extremely comfortable (much more than the big chain hotel we stayed in the week before) and the pillows were of exceptional quality. There was a good variety of choices for breakfast, where you could order something from the menu and help yourself from the buffet too. Staff were pleasant and attentive; we arrived early and were able to check in before the specified time, which was much appreciated after a long journey.

Being an old building, it was a little chilly. Having a blanket in the room for those of us who feel the cold would have been a welcome addition.

The Hotel / Pub is in the centre of Richmond so it is easy to explore the town with its loveley shops, cobbled streets and the castle The menu looked extensive and the number of people in the bar suggests that it does good food. There is also a great selection of ales for those who like their beers. We didn't eat here as we were meeting someone elsewhere (in Darlington) for a meal, however we did have breakfast here which I really enjoyed. I had the Eggs Benedict which was superb. My wife is not a meat eater (but does have fish) but her breakfast was limited. Could I suggest to the staff you look at offering Eggs Royale (Salmon instead of Bacon). I think a lot of people would enjoy it and as you're doing Benedict it's an easy move. Places to visit like Barnard Castle is just a short drive away (highly recomend The Bowes Museum) so, as mentioned it's a great location.

The only issue is Parking which is limited but there is parking in areas close by (but you'll need a disc - which you can buy locally). Also, being in the centre it can be a little noisy but the sound of people stopped just after midnight. Would we stay here again, yes, certainly.

The staff were really helpful and even made sure we had a hot takeaway breakfast on the first morning when we had to leave early for a group walk The food in general was superb (both breakfast and an evening meal that we paid for separately). The room was spacious and comfortable. We'll definitely book room 7 the next time we stay there as a family!

We couldn't get parked in the car park as there are limited spaces but this was due to our late arrival. Again the staff kindly supplied us with other places to park at and we were able to unload the car in the car park before moving the car so it wasn't a problem at all.

Staff lovely and helpful, appreciated staff moving their car to help us with parking on site. Black Lion very friendly and welcoming to dogs. Bedroom - very comfortable, lovely crisp bed linen, and thank you, large bath towels - so many hotels offer small towels which you can't wrap around yourself! Quality tea/coffee tray. Dinner - enjoyed in 'snug' bar, good choice and value for money, good beers, wines etc. Breakfast - enjoyed in Parrot Room, good choice, but when there 31/3 - 1/4 no fruit or yoghurt available, not all want cereals.

As above would have liked fruit and yoghurt available for breakfast.

In good location, with good sized rooms, with excellent coffee/tea selection and a generous amount of milk provided, none of the stingy one carton per drink. Good choice of food for breakfast, we are in properly on the evening and there was a 2 course for 15.00 offer which was excellent value. Good location on a busy side street, we were able to park on the property at the Rae of the building.

The C/H was broken but as soon as we reported it we were given a portable heater which soon warmed the room and the heating was soon repaired. The stairs are steep and a little uneven, but this is to be expected in such an old building, so if you are not so good on your feet ask for a lower room.

great room with en-suite, powerful shower plus large bath! comfortable bed, very friendly, helpful & polite staff. Our Dog appreciated the treats provided by Sam, which were a nice touch! Plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits etc. for the humans in the room. Great range of drinks in the bar, very attentive service by Tracy, and excellent quality hot food. Dog was welcome in the bar. Excellent location in the town centre, on a quiet side street just off the market place. No passing traffic so generally no noise, except some un-avoidable delivery vehicles in the morning. (only to be expected in a town centre!) All the staff were faultless! Many Thanks.

Lots of stairs, so access may be difficult for some people, but its a very old building full of twists & turns, full of Character & history. Far preferable to the modern boxes that proliferate nowadays.
