We booked a five night stay so that the men could walk St Oswald's Way and use Rothbury as a base for the first part. Slightly run down public areas and lots of stairs but the welcome we received was worth it. Anna, wearing her receptionist hat, checked us in and then put her barmaid hat on to serve us drinks. We'd already decided to eat out but presumably she also had a waitress hat. Next morning she was taking orders for cooked breakfasts and also serving them. Returning to the hotel mid-morning I found her mopping floors. Is there no end to her talents? Our rooms were all first class, big, clean and comfortable and we would definitely stay again if we were in the area. On our last morning disaster struck. No Anna. And more importantly, no chef. To avoid a mutiny my husband and his friend went to the nearest shop and bought milk and butter. This wasn't good enough for some of the guests who seemed hellbent on getting a refund for their breakfasts if not the entire stay. I'm not sure they had even paid for the breakfasts at this stage. They marched into the kitchen with their phones taking photographs. A thoroughly nasty group of women who kept talking about how dirty the kitchen was and how they wouldn't have eaten from there anyway. I'm sure they will get a lot of pleasure from writing a damning review on here. Take no notice of them. The hotel is a lovely friendly place. Anna could do with some help though.,

excellent location, about 5 mins walk from the village centre. check-in was a very simple and uncomplicated operation. The room was larger than expected, very well Equipped, well maintained and very clean - For those who travel with mobile phones, Pads or laptops etc., there was a mult-iplug in the room at a very convenient location - very useful. Like many places around the world staff shortages can be an issue at times - breakfast was slow but freshly made and well worth the wait. Staff were very friendly and helpful, a great place to stay or use as a base for touring

Only 1 item - bed was to soft

The room and ensuite were nice and spacious with a nice view out of the window. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was fine for our needs. The hotel was quiet and very well situated. Lovely, big, soft towels.

The first night it was very cold in the room. I wore a fleece and walking socks in bed! The second night it was warmer. It took ages for the hot water to arrive in the shower, though when it came, it was good and hot. .

I don't understand the negative reviews about this place. We paid a budget hotel price but found decent, clean rooms, friendly staff and an excellent breakfast. What more can one want? Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Hotel was v/good, staff was friendly and welcoming. Room was clean and spacious with onsuite shower/bathroom. Solid 8/10 and sure to stay there again for abit longer. Good price aswell.

Not much of a view (looking straight towards someone's house). Shower took a while to get hot and made a huge noise.

Lovely big room with great views. Big bathroom too. Very comfortable room size and decor wise. I would stay again.

The quality of the breakfast was on the cheap side however the overall price for everything was excellent. The mattress could have been comfier.

A pleasant hotel with a warm welcome a short walk from the town centre. Although a limited menu the evening meal was good, breakfast selection was as expected. The room was clean and fresh, lots of stairs to climb!

No lift.

Very Friendly helpful staff. Parking. Location. Out of the hustle, but in walking distance to the amenities. Large bedroom which I wasn't quite expecting. The food was more homely than restaurant, but that said, there was plenty of it, very tasty and mine was very hot. My order was always correct.

Thought the communal areas could do with a little bit more tlc, but it is an older property, so enhancing the original features may help, or maybe another member of staff to assist in the daily maintenance of such vast area's to take care of. Breakfast on the last day, we all seemed to arrive at the same time,so it was not quite as hot as the rest of my stay, but again I feel that the 2 young men seemed to be there permanently, and didn't see any others assisting (other than the lady working hard in the bedrooms). That said, I would still revisit it if in the area again.
