Lovely old pub and accomodation. Room was really nice as was the staff at breakfast. Brilliant breakfast menu superbly prepared.

Only thing which let it down slightly was small bathroom and the check in time was on the late side at 3pm and the check out time 10.30am which is a bit early. Given check in was late at 3pm then I would have expected a minimum check out of 11am, possibly even towards noon.

I have been staying at the White Horse and Griffin at this time of year for more than a decade, so I know pretty much what to expect. Everything about it suits me. There seem to have been some refurbishments this year: redecoration and new carpets and bathroom floors; all in keeping with the style of the charming historic building. The room I had chosen was quite small, but adequate. (I should probably book even earlier next year for greater choice.) The staff are invariably friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are always tasty..

Unfortunately there was a problem with the hot water, which was apparently taxing the plumber -- there was a difficulty in sourcing the necessary part. The resulting cold showers were an unwelcome bracing start to the day, but these things happen.

We really enjoyed staying here, the place has so much character and it's perfect for a couple staying in Whitby. We stayed in the room right at the top - it's best to read the description when booking as there are alot of stairs and the last set are quite steep. I was prepared for this though and it suited our needs, but for anyone staying who might struggle I would recommend checking first. Personally, I had an amazing night sleep (and I don't sleep well) - it was cosy, safe and hidden away. There will always be noises and creeks in the building because it's on a busy street and it's an old historical structure. We stayed for an evening meal and wow the food is delicious!! Our server (and pretty much every other task in the hotel for us) Amy #1 with the blonde hair, is amazing. She was really polite, professional and catered for our every need. I have to say, I thought she was the manager because she definitely knows her job very well - keep her as long as you can :) Thank you for making our stay perfect!

There wasn't anything that stood out.

We would love to stay again as you can't fault it. If you could give the staff a double smile I would. They took our luggage up to our room well before check in time. Couldn't do enough for you. So friendly and professional. The room warrior queen is beautiful and was very clean. Very comfy bed. The breakfast was wonderful. Hubby got the local kippers and was over the moon. Sorry for anyone asking after us he ate the last one! Fresh juice fresh ingredients. The dining room itself is really well presented and clean. Very atmospheric. The location was perfect. Near to the bus and train stations. Lots of bars and shops next door. No ghosts were heard or seen for us!

No fan for the room, but staff did look for one

Fabulous stay, the hotel room and hallways are spotless and everything you need in the room, we stayed in Helga Maria room. Staff very friendly, particularly impressed when checking in being asked if we would like some milk and you are given a small flask with fresh milk in, I hate those small plastic milks you normally get where there is never enough and you cant get the plastic seal off and half of it ends up on you or the floor. Large comfy mattress (not one that is 2 singles zipped up in the middle), quality furnishings and an excellent location. Breakfast is excellent quality, good choice and again what I particularly liked is that you have to ask for orange juice, cereals etc as this is then fresh and hasn't been left out on a table with people sneezing and coughing all over it and the coffee served is proper filter coffee. No parking on site but you have lots of options close by, the hotel will guide you to these when you get your confirmation email.

Nothing, book you will not be disappointed.

Great place that, even though I've been to Whitby countless times, didn't know existed until I came upon it on Booking.com. Location is excellent, close to everything. Bed was large, clean and comfortable. Room and bathroom were spotless. Plenty of tea/coffee facilities, and we were given fresh milk in a flask to take up to the room. Breakfast choice was great - I had a full English (delicious), my wife had eggs Benedict (great variation having bacon instead of ham on it). There were also locally smoked kippers on the menu among other things (also a vegetarian option). Tea, coffee and either orange or apple juice were served too. Staff were great - Leah especially was lovely - friendly and helpful both on the evening and at breakfast, and also have to mention Amy from the evening who was also lovely.

No complaints about anything

Great location. comfortable beds. Lovely breakfast. Waiter service and made fresh to order. spacious bedrooms. my in-laws’ room was gorgeous! Huge bathroom!

disappointed there was no availability for evening meal because they were fully booked but our fault for not pre-booking. we stayed in the Discovery family room. it was fine but a little dated and shabby in places. iron burn and marks on the carpet. could do with a good paint and freshen up. no plug sockets in the main bedroom, no dressing table but was fine for one night. main concern was that the kids’ beds has stairs leading to the door and I was a bit worried the little one would get up in the night and fall but he didn’t! not all of the plug sockets worked in that room either and you could either have all of the lights on which was too bright or lights off which was pitch black. Again, not great for my kids. next time I’d bring a night light.

The building dates back to 1681, so you expect the floors to be creaky and the door frames to be ill-fitting, it all added to the character of the place. it has obviously been well preserved over the years and you really had a sense of stepping back in time. We stayed in the Dickens room, which was comfortable with a large double bed. I’m 6’3” so it was nice not to have my feet dangling off. the end.

There was an odd, rather unpleasant smell in the en-suite bathroom, which must have been coming up from the plug holes. We kept the window open and it kept it at bay. The staff were pleasant enough, but didn’t really engage with anyone, asking how they slept or what they had planned for the day etc. Small thing but can make all the difference. We did think about dining there in the evening and although the dishes on the menu sounded lovely, it was limited and quite expensive.

Room at the top of the place was really good. Very clean. All facilities were there. Even a packet of biscuits to have with our tea...! Bed was super comfortable. Breakfast was also really tasty. Location is right in the centre of Whitby so again really good. All in all, a definite good place to stay.

Actually nothing was bad about this place. Maybe to have the coffee in a cafetiere or a flask on the table? Honestly it was a really good stay. We only stayed one night, but it was all good.

Amazing location. Lots of atmosphere and character. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast very good. Restaurant meal outstanding. Staff very friendly. We're already booked up for next year!

The biggest issue which I think would be easy for the team to put right was we could here very loud music through our room walls, from checking in at around 2pm until 10pm at night. When my husband went to investigate, it was music coming from a set of loud speakers in an empty area of the restaurant. When my husband asked for this to be turned off it was done without a problem, but it was quite inconvenient as we were already in bed. Quick fix for the team I think.
