The staff were so friendly and helpful, the whole B&B was nicely decorated in nutral but stylish colours, rooms very clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast offered a variety of items ensuring that most customers would enjoy a good breakfast and staff again very helpful checking that toast and eggs etc were cooked to individuls tastes. to others. Would definately recommend to others and stay again if the occasion arose.

The room/bed was very comfortable and we slept well. We ate in the hotel as well as the food was really nice and well priced. Whilst the location in itself is not exciting it was ideal for what we and our friends wanted to do. It was really clean with a great rainfall shower and good size bottles of toiletries.

No kettle in the bedroom to make tea. The coffee pod machine supplied to use didnt boil water needed to make good tea and we had coffee flavoured tea as well. Whilst the continental breakfast was fine it should have been restocked without having to be asked. Guests coming down later than us were faced with half empty buffet selection.

Very comfy bed and luxurious bedding. So much so that we ordered pillows and a quilt from the company that supplies the pub Room was bright, airy and overlooked fields. Air conditioning was very effective. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. However, on closer inspection, the bathroom sink taps could do with a deep clean. Toothpaste on the tap from the previous visitors. The shower was a rainfall shower and was hot and powerful. Plenty of drawer storage but could do with hanging space. There was a hook on the back of the door with two coat hangers. Evening meal in the restaurant was delicious. Breakfast had plenty of choice. Staff very attentive, polite and friendly. Plenty of parking spaces. Lovely, peaceful place to stay. Would highly recommend.

There wasn't anything to dislike

The decor was simple but well maintained and very clean. The staff were brilliant and the food very good. The room was very quiet with the exception of passing traffic. The pictures on the website don't do the rooms any justice, they are definitely better than the photo's.

My only pickup point is that Booking.com advertise the room as having a spa bath. It doesn't but it is a very large bath. The hotels own website states bath, so I think the problem is booking .com having the wrong description. Not a problem though as it is the largest hotel bath I have ever been in.

Special thanks to Adam and Hannah for being so hospitable and friendly! A real transformation from the pub that was here before. Excellent location for getting to the University and for being in Wivenhoe. A comfortable room with a great en-suite. It was a bonus to have a smart tv. Delicious menu for lunch, dinner and cocktails.

Extra amenities in the room would have been preferred, such as a wardrobe and an actual kettle rather than just a coffee machine. Clearly still finding their feet in terms of breakfast and fine-tuning the rooms, but I have no doubt this will improve in time.

Exceptional cleanliness, comfort & very friendly & attentive staff.

On the whole, the staff were extremely attentive & helpful, although one or two of the staff were overly gushing, which can come across as false. The room had nowhere to hang clothes other than one hook on the back of the door. Only one chair was provided in the double room. The toilet roll holder was impossibly positioned above and behind the right shoulder. These are all minor criticisms and mentioned only with the intention of helping the management to achieve the absolutely first class rating that they very much deserve...... hence my own rating of "Excellent". I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends & acquaintances.

We wanted an overnight stop somewhere close to the Beth Chatto gardens, and this is only 5 minutes away so very convenient. The whole place has recently been fully renovated so looks and feels brand new. It's been tastefully done, rooms are attractively furnished, with comfy beds, smart TV's and air con. The food in the restaurant was really excellent and we couldn't fault it. We felt that prices were also very reasonable for the standard of food and drink on offer, and portions were very generous. The buffet-style continental breakfast (included in the price of the room) was also excellent, with fruits, cereals, yoghurt, cold meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, breads, cakes and pastries, again all good quality. Staff were also all very friendly and helpful (the young woman at breakfast went out of her way to find me a banana when none were out!)

One very small thing - the bathroom door was a wall-hung sliding door, so not very private and there was definitely a knack to getting it to stay shut! We realised that this was a space issue, but there are better sliding doors than those used.

Fantastic staff. Lovely evening meal in restaurant (which is obviously very popular as was almost full when we stayed).

Car park wasn't very obvious from road. Breakfast was a little limited; some elements of the continental buffet were seriously depleted by the time we arrived - however we both had sufficient and I expect if we had requested dishes to be refreshed they would have done something about it. If your B&B experience is defined by a large traditional Full English breakfast, The Flag wouldn't be for you. If you're more concerned with comfort, cleanliness, great on site restaurant,etc then I can thoroughly recommend The Flag.

Rooms were very nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. Bed was very comfortable. On-site parking. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

The pillows were very soft and not suitable for us. No proper hanging space. Not enough milk for the nespresso coffee and not sure if the tea would have been successful as there wasn’t a separate kettle. These are only small things for us since we were only staying overnight to visit family and I’m sure these issues would have been sorted if we had asked.

Very clean spacious room, tastefully decorated. Comfortable bed and pillows. Friendly helpful staff. Good modern bathroom. Tea, coffee, biscuits provided. Nice buffet breakfast.

Air con didn’t work one night but the staff fixed it for the next night. Just one hook to hang clothes on back of door, no hanging rack or wardrobe. Would have liked a proper kettle as we don’t like making tea with a coffee machine. We disliked the scent of the toiletries.
