Staff were really friendly and helpful. We were welcomed to the hotel and offered tips on where to eat as the hotel restaurant was not open. Very well decorated hotel and room. The room was nice , and the bathroom had a good shower. There was some road noise that didn't bother us, but they offered complimentary ear plugs, which was thoughtful. Breakfast was delicious and made fresh to order. It is in a very convenient location for Colchester town centre.parking is at nacp car park which is only a few minutes walk.

We personally didn't find the bed particularly comfortable. We were on the 2nd floor, and the first thing I noticed was that the room was warm. There was a fan of sorts that we needed to keep on all night. It was difficult to get ready for the event we were going to the next day as the room was so warm. I was very hot and sweaty. They may need to invest in better air conditioning to improve this.

Location for going out in Colchester was excellent. Right by all the major bars and restaurants but still quiet

Parking was tricky if you dont know the area and how to get about. Although there is parking outside off peak they are always used and there is nowhere to wait to drop off bags etc. Also bus lane from the bottom of North Hill so you have to go to the main roundabout and through busy areas to get to it from the other direction. Make sure you work out how to get to the car park at Nunns Road BEFORE leaving and also its a pound cheaper on the NCP app.

There was nothing that could have been better. On arrival the receptionist was helpful and friendly, and I was so pleased when I first entered the room. It was light, clean, smelt fresh. ansd was well equipped with kettle, teas, coffees...and nice toiletries. I had a really pleasant evening there, and the bed (and bed linen) was excellent. Next morning I requested scrambled egg on marmite toast, and the chef even went to the trouble to make a special marmite butter! It was such a nice touch. I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel and am so glad that I chose this place to stay.

Absolutely nothing.

Very comfortable. Wonderful towels in the bathroom, big and fluffy and a good shower. Quality bedding and comfortable bed. Very pleasant bar and good wine selection. Food from the restaurant was good quality and reasonable price. However, the star of the whole stay was Julie. She went above and beyond to ensure my comfort. Organised a cab to my next venue. As a solo traveller of a certain age I sometimes find I am invisible in hotels, not so here. Julie stopped to chat when her duties permitted. Every hotel should have a Julie!

The weather! Since the hotel can’t control that I have no complaints.

The location is excellent. I'm very glad it was near the top of the hill so that we didn't have to keep walking up it!! The hotel is right around the corner from the main high street, so we could just pop out to eat, and roll back when we'd eaten too much! The staff were good, the woman who checked us in and was managing breakfast on the Sunday 3rd was particularly good, you could really tell she loved her job.

It was quite noisy in the room. We were prepared for some street noise based on other reviews and the location (it's difficult to have a silent room in such an excellent location in town!), and the staff at North Hill kindly left some earbuds in the room for this purpose. Unfortunately, I can't wear earbuds as they cause me pain. The noise outside wasn't actually that bad, the issue really was noise from within the property. We could constantly hear slamming doors, so it wasn't really possible to relax in the room. I think a lot of this noise comes from the main front door, as we did notice ourselves that it slammed shut very loudly unless we remembered to hold it and guide it slowly shut...if it's possible to cushion the door somehow, I believe this would solve a lot of the noise!

Convenient for where I wanted to be. Staff were very nice. Because they no longer have a restaurant it was very quiet. I spent the evening (after dinner over the road) talking to the bar man Chris. There was only us for a while and helped the evening pass. My room was small but lovely and plenty big enough for just me. Bed very comfortable. I didn't have breakfast.

Bedroom was very warm, but I could have turned off the radiator but didn't realise I could until the morning. So not really a dislike.

Excellent breakfast, well-equipped room, friendly service, right in the town centre.

Noisy because it was on a busy street especially with the windows open which was necessary because it was very hot in the room. However, the hotel was up front about this and provided earplugs as well as cooling fans. As a result I was able to sleep well, even though it was an exceptionally warm night.

Friendly staff, lovely relaxed decor, excellent breakfast. We paid a bit extra for a room at the back of the hotel, instead of one overlooking the main road as the reviews suggested that it can be noisy . Which it was! The back of the building was perfectly quiet, beautiful room with old beams and loads of amenities. Lots of c hoice for (table service) breakfast.

Nothing to do with the hotel, but take care driving up the hill if youre following sat nav. ! I'm pretty sure that I unintentionally drove up in a bus lane, possibly even in a one-way system ! The signs at the bottom weren't very clear (to me) and sat nav was probably just knackered after the long drive...

Lovely staff. Very clean throughout. Super breakfast. Ate dinner in the restaurant, also very good. Very close to the centre and convenient for the castle and Mercury Theatre. I would certainly stay at this hotel again.

Paying for parking would have made the stay quite expensive. Luckily we had a reduced rate for Saturday at St Mary's car park as we had bought theatre tickets. After 6pm, we moved the car to the loading bay in front of the hotel and were able to leave it here for free until we left on Sunday afternoon. The room faced onto the street and noise from the street travelled up very clearly to the room. Not a major problem for us but if it had been, we could have shut the window and used the free-issue ear plugs supplied by the hotel.

The location was very good, and we could walk to and from where we needed to go. It's very central. Close to shops. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel was very clean The breakfast is really nice and a lot of options are available. The shower was very powerful in the room.

The windows are not double glazed (although I think it Is an old building and can't be changed) it was very loud and didn't get quiet again till about 4am with traffic and people walking passed on a sat night. They did supply ear plugs in the room.
