. We really enjoyed our stay at the American Hotel, and I have to thank the reception staff (such as Masuma) for contributing to our positive experience! From helping with a room upgrade, to cutting replacement room keys, to ensuring no forgotten items were left behind, the service at the American Hotel was next to none. We stayed in a Family suite, which was spacious enough for our needs and more. If I visited Downtown LA again, this is definitely where I would stay.

I like the location of the property. It’s 5 mins walk from Little Tokyo Metro station which is connected to Union Station where you can catch the FlyawayBus to/from LAX airport. The location is safe and has amazing restaurants in the neighborhood. I love japanese food and we were on the right place to enjoy authentic restaurants. The hotel has shared bathrooms and the room is enough for 2 people. It has mini fridge and small tv. We got 1 window which is the most important thing for me when renting a room. It’s next to night bar and restaurant, but it did not bother us much. On our 3rd night, there were bunch of guests that were so loud, shouting, and partying next to our room. I am glad that the hotel people managed to remove them before things get worse. Also you’ll meet homeless people around the area, but I think It’s normal around America. We did not experience anything bad, the neighborhood is pretty much safe for tourist and first time visitors of USA. Over all It’s worth the price consider you are in LA. Not a fancy hotel but more than enough to have a peaceful stay and it keep safe our belongings while we are away.

I didn’t expect anything fancy considering the low price of the hotel. So everything here met my expectation.

The Arts District and Little Tokyo neighborhoods are right outside this hotel with lots of restaurants as well as nearby markets and shops. The location is great for reaching everything in downtown LA, and since it's also close to a major subway connection point, you can go directly to Santa Monica beach, Pasadena, or Long Beach too; or go to Union Station 1 stop away on the subway and take the train to other cities or the FlyAway bus to LAX. The rooms in this historic building are renovated, the beds are very comfortable, and the murals inside that give its history a nod are really beautiful. Big thanks to Masuma at the front desk for being so helpful and super nice!

The American Hotel is rather enigmatic in that it is a five star hotel at a one star price. I don't know how they do it. The room I was in could have accommodated a herd of buffalo but the chap at the desk told me no pets were allowed, scuppering that idea. It is right in the centre of a very lively part of town and just a short walk to the nearest tube (pronounced CHOOB, not TOOB!) station and many other facilities. I cannot reccomend it highly enough for an economical, comfortable stay in Los Angeles.

You have to take the bitter with the sweet. Shared bathrooms are a bit of a pain but you can't have everything.

Despite being advised by a local Uber driver that the area was not the best and that we shouldn't stay there, we decided to at least book into the hotel. The taxi's approach to the hotel was through Skid Row, which is less than 100m away and rough. However, the Arts District, where the hotel is located, is a world away and is going through a successful gentrification process. There are quirky cafes, bars and three breweries within a couple of minutes' walk. You can have a good time here with the added feeling that you are on the edge of your comfort zone. Highly recommended for real travellers. Masuma and the rest of the staff at the American Hotel were particularly helpful and will put you right on where to go and what to do.

Sure, the area could have been nicer, but it's heading that way anyway.

We spent 3 nights at American Hotel. We checked in with Masuma, who was really lovely and helped us with everything we needed. Our room was nice with everything you'd need for a short stay. It was excellent value for money and the shared bathrooms were very clean. The location was great too, right in Downtown LA, with a lively area around the hotel to explore (I recommend taking the <10 minute walk to Little Tokyo). We found key tourist areas such as Hollywood to be easily in reach from the hotel, by taxi or public transport. The 24hr access also made this hotel very convenient!

The temperature of one of the showers was quite hard to control, but that's all!

This worked really well for us. So much so that we stayed an additional night which is always a good sign. We needed to be in the area and we had secure parking for our motorcycle elsewhere otherwise it might have been difficult/expensive. We had really nice chats with all the staff, Ian, Moises and Masuma and we had the impression that they would have given us any help we needed. The communal facilities work - nothing to be afraid of. Nice coffee shop across the road for breakfast. If we are in LA again it is more than likely we would be in this area and we would not hesitate to stay here again.

All good and what we expected. Only silly thing is it being cheaper to book via Booking that address on an extra night directly!

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Masuma and her friend (whose name unfortunately escapes me) for their incredible hospitality and company! From the very start, they made us feel at home and made our stay even more special. Their kindness, care, and attention to every detail truly made a difference. People like them make any trip so much more memorable. Our hotel stay was also absolutely wonderful! The hotel is impeccable and exceeded all our expectations. Even though our room was next to the front desk, it was incredibly quiet, ensuring peaceful nights of sleep. The bathroom was always clean and well-maintained, reflecting the staff’s commitment to guests’ comfort. Additionally, the location was perfect, making it easy to access everything we needed. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a quality, peaceful experience. We will definitely be back!

Affordable price for LA downtown. Very interesting experience and the place as well. Hotel is well maintained and pretty clean for this type of a property. Stuff is supportive and helpful. Close to the Union Station and metro. Few blocks away from some of the tourist attractions. City Sight Seeing tour bus runs through the neighborhood and stops by Little Tokyo which is just 5 min away from the hotel.

For the first time tourist in LA and a solo female traveler I would not recommend this area. I had to get back to the hotel before dark every day and would never go outside after 7:30 pm cuz I traveled alone and apparently this hotel is in the “hood”. But it is LA downtown which was my main point picking a hotel. I didn’t really like the smell in the rooms and corridors. I don’t know it’s either carpets or AC units.
