A staff member called Masuma was so kind and helpful. She helped me try to resolve an issue with my stay, all the while doing it professionally and understanding. She was definitely the highlight for me there. There's a corner store convenience store right outside the hotel too if you need to grab a few drinks or snacks. They even had kombucha and hemp drinks! Little Tokyo is also walking distance, which i didn't get to explore much but maybe next time. Uber service was reliable in the area too.

Compared to home, cause i came from Canada. The neighbourhood was subpar, but it makes up for it for the stores/restaurants. The rooms are pretty bland but you have what you need, not much else to say there. You can also hear through the walls so don't be too loud! It didn't bother me much but if you prefer a hotel with bathrooms in your room, unfortunately they are public here, Women's/Men's.

Place was clean and looked respectable. The staff were helpful and mostly responsive. The beds were comfortable and the room was generally in good shape

The hotel is only accessible by a long flight of stairs, which made getting up extremely difficult for someone who was on crutches so this place is not for people with mobility issues. Further, I must have missed it while reading, but it being a "hotel", I expected en-suite rooms with its own bathrooms. I was wrong and there were shared bathrooms (to be fair, they were well maintained, clean and smelled pleasant).

For the price, this place was excellent Quiet room on 4th floor, nice view of city. Very comfortable bed, refrigerator in room Shared washrooms were very clean Staff friendly, free wifi and bag storage Location was better than hoped… surrounded by an array of trendy breweries, eateries and coffee spots. Free bus (A) stops right outside. Yes it is close to skid row but the area specifically near accommodation felt safe and good. We walked alot, almost always via the fun Little Tokyo Recommend for like minded guests who are happy for value accommodation

The Location was perfect. I don't rent cars when I travel so I can truly experience where I am on foot. The Arts District is a great place for that, and the American Hotel seemed to be at the center of the district. I could walk up to the Broad and Contemporary art museums, over to the Toy and flower districts ( albeit by walking through a sketchy skid row), and further to "The Last Bookstore," and DTLA. The arts district has several small galleries and cutting edge restaurants as well. No one will go hungry in that area!

I don't think there was one thing. I do think that the showers in the non-unisex bathrooms need a small space to change in and out of clothes and to put clothes down on a shelf while in the shower, but that is a very small thing. The unisex bathroom was always free when I wanted to take a shower anyhow.

great location and great price

i understand them taking a deposit but not sure why it is necessary to take the credit card number so many times 1) i enterder it in the booking site to pay in advance 2) they entered it manually in the card reader 3) they read it with the card reader and asked me to enter the pin 4) they scanned it (both on its own and with passport, which was already scanned separately) they said that all is going to be deleted after checkout. but still seems excessive collection of data

After reading reviews you really would think this place was in a horrible area and that's far from the truth. You do have to pass by a lot..a lot of homeless people, it's Los Angeles downtown, not hollywood but once you get in the area of the hotel there a many blocks where they have kept it clean (literally power wash the side walks every morning) and are building it up. There's a convenient store right downstairs, many restaurants and shops walking distance. There's also a little shopping mall "Little Tokyo".

You really have to get lucky with parking. I came during the week so there were a few instances where I found parking directly in front of the hotel and I didn't have to pay. I did end up getting a ticket but it wasn't in the area of the hotel, so be cautious of where you park. To save the headache, just pay for the parking that they provide next to the hotel. They do have some free street parking in the front of the hotel but you can forget about finding a spot starting on Friday and through Sunday

Arts District is a nice area to be, it's pretty gentrified though. The room was good, we got a little upgrade on arrival by the very helpful Masuma at the reception. Everything was really clean, safe and the room was functional. Ours even had a skyline view. A stop of the free DASH bus is across the street, also many shops, restaurants and bars.

It was quite loud at times, the walls are not too thick and sounds are well transported over them. We could hear every use of the bathroom next door, talks in the hallway and maintenance a bit too good. Laundry facilities were not for guest use anymore when we were there, that was a pitty. The rooms could be a little more cozy. The areas next to arts district (Skid Row / Downtown) were pretty dirty.

A lovely well kept and good value hotel. It’s right in the middle of Downtown and really close to the metro line of you need to get around without a car (not easy in LA). There’s also a great little corner store on the same block and Little Tokyo market just round the corner.

Obviously none of the rooms have any plumbing. Bit the bathrooms are easily accessible and well kept. But just be aware. There also aren’t bins in the rooms but there are easily accessible ones in the halls.

The attention was exceptional , Masuma , the miss at the front desk was really kind and she was up to help us anytime. We didnt have any problems with self check in The room was acceptable, the sofa was not as confortable as i would like to , but it aint was bad at all

Some of our towels and one blancket had spots of makeup or something even though they were clean. I think they can inprove those details

The Arts District is great. On an even better note is the staff! I flew into LAX and stay at the American Hotel for the price and location. I flew in at 7:30 a.. and did not want to lug my bags all around LA for the day. Masuma the hostess communicated with me by email a week before I arrived and agreed to let me keep my bag in the office while I enjoyed the city and waited for check in. When I arrived I was even more appreciative when Masuma let me check in early. I will be back!

The walls are a bit thin but it’s a historic hotel and I really do like the historic feel!
